I am NOT a huge fan of covers, much less ever think a cover is better than the original. But this style is just so much different than how The Velvet Underground did it - a sleepy, dreamy, lullaby almost - and this, an upbeat, almost folky sound, but still somehow maintains the plaintive quality of the song. Whenever I hear the Underground’s version, I immediately want to hear this one. Shannon was just a magical artist.
I love this one and it pops up in my playlist. I am grateful to both Shannon and Lou...two of my favourite lyricists. Shannon covered Lou's song so well and we lost him before his time and Lou Reed's time. RIP
He and lqyne staley are my all time favs. I loved shannon because i had the same rasp he did except his insane range !! He wss a once in a lifetime vocaliest . The world will never get to experience that voice in person again.
I miss this brilliant & unique rock vocalist/frontman...the majority of the best rock died way before their time just like Shannon Hoon. Blind Melon with Shannon Hoon will forever be one of the greatest rock bands of all-time.

I always think the originator deserves all the credit in the world, but what Shannon did with the line "if I could walk away from meeeeeeeeeeeee-hehehe" adds his own stamp onto the song. This guy was a musical genius, and I personally enjoy this version of Candy Says more than the original.
I remember writing to the Band about how I enjoyed their music, to which I ended up on the Melon Head mailing list. I remember getting this maxi single for Change with this included. ✌
It's a nice interpretation, but the words don't resonate nearly as much as they do in the VU version. The way he's singing it is kind of reducing the emotional impact of the song.

@jdog6 This song is on the soundtrack for The Cowboy Way and the Change single (often referred to the Country Jellyfish version) . Made the soundtrack but not the movie. To my knowledge these are the only official recordings.
