Bro, I study music in Uni and my final year dissertation was based on this, so let me school you one time! West Africans have been making musical hybrids with European merchants and sailors since the 15th century (Way before the Trans-Atlantic slave trade). Reggae was inspired by mento which is a blend of African elements and European elements with roots in the Afro-Jamaican religion Kumina by "Kongo" (Slaves taken from the coast of the Congo's, Gabon & Angola) Igbo and Yoruba slaves. The stylistic origin of Mento is Calypso, and the stylistic background of Calypso is Kaiso. Kaiso is a word found in Southeastern Nigerian Languages from the Nri, Arochukwu and Ibom kingdom (Ibibio, Igbo and Efik people). Kaiso is a reinterpretation of folk practices and music introduced by slaves from the Nri, Arochukwu and Ibom kingdom present-day Southeastern Nigeria (Ibibio, Igbo and Efik people) with musical features from Kongo slaves. The Dembow drum pattern is native to Africa, and so is the Tresillo rhythm. Notice how Caribbean and Afro Latin music utilises these rhythms and accompany them with idiophone (Struck or plucked) instruments, i.e. Steelpans, timbales and mallets etc. Well, these were modelled after African idiophones and instruments like the Ogene, Ekwe, Marimba/Gyil, Mbira, Kalimba, Udu and so forth. A simple rhythm bounces back and forth over the once vast Atlantic ocean, ever faster. It begins in Sub-Saharan Africa-slaves brought it with them on a long journey to the Caribbean and Americas. By the nineteenth century, these musical influences became the defining element in the Caribbean and Afro-Latin music.
All the West, Central and Southern African sound admixtures were refined through European (British, French & Spanish) and a hint of Indian musical elements to form the majority of the music from the Carribean and Latin America. The representation of Carribean carnival and the "Canboulay" music is as a result of French masquerade carnivals, and slave folk practices similar to the Harvest Festivals/Cultural Festivals from West Africa, e.g. Igbo New yam festival & Ekpe Aro-Ibibio (Igbo) masquerade festival from Southeastern Nigeria. Plus, Kongo Kalinda dance/music and Ashanti Dagomba music styles. West Africans have been influenced by the Caribbean and vice versa because it is sounds and rhythms that African, Caribbean and Afro American people are familiar with.
