    Thank you for the informative video! We adopted our dog from a rescue. Unfortunately, she was trained with negative reinforcement, shock and choke collar. Your videos and advice changed our lives and most importantly, our dog’s life. Although we were told to not let her sniff on walks from people who were more concerned about “disciplining” her, we tried your method with letting the dog sniff on walks and it works! She is a much happier dog. She is calmer and less nervous on walks. Much thanks!

    Just finished reading Dr. Dunbar’s book “After you get your puppy” and I’m now starting “Before you get your puppy” (yes I know, backwards). We get our miniature poodle next Friday and I’m trying to prepare to do things right from the get go. I love his processes!

    So like……… take time and smell the roses. Makes for a more enjoyable walk all round if you ask me. ‘Hoomans’ have completely forgotten that our relationship with dogs has always been a symbiotic one. If it’s not working for the dog it won’t work for you. You slip into having to find ever more complex training and numerous tools, trying to control the dog. Relationship is the KEY to you both having the best life.

    Dr Dunbar is just SO DAMN COOL!!! "Positive Only" training really doesn't work with my high drive working line German Shepherd, he DOES need some corrections (sometimes a lot) to understand what's desired, appropriate behavior--but on the whole, Dr Dunbar MAKES SO MUCH SENSE. Love him!! He's got an awful lot of "educated" common sense, lol!!!

    I like this idea but what if my dog wants to eat everything she sniffs?

    • @Karina-Loves-Andreas
      @Karina-Loves-Andreas Před 3 lety +1

      Yipes--you mean, everything? Grass? Goose poop? In any event, I'm pretty positive Dr Dunbar DOES have videos on the "leave it" command...

    • @Karina-Loves-Andreas

      Also--is your dog healthy weight? Over weight? I do a lot of obedience work with my working line German Shepherd during walks, we do 50% "structured walks" at heel position, 50% "sniff & be a dog &,relieve yourself & be a dog", broken up in 5-10 minute increments on a 40-60 minute walk (otherwise, he's a reactive, pulling nut). He gets his main meal in the evening, but gets A LOT of treats during walks & playtime. Maybe doing intermittent obedience with higher value treats on walks, including offering higher value treats for " leave it" command might help? Or MAYBE (depending on your dog's overall weight, etc), offering a meal prior to walks would curb the behavior if he's excessively hungry prior to walks? Splitting up meals into 2x daily if your currently giving just one? This may lessen his desire to "work" for treat rewards during walks though, if you're doing treats for obedience on walks. Just things to consider, hope it helps.

    Dr Dunbar has some good points, but training wise Cesar Milan's methods make more sense and works for me.
