GRS Gemresearch: Unusual Phosphorescent Pebbles Identified as Synthetic Aggregates

Phosphorescent pebbles are presented in the market as natural rounded pebbles (3.53 density) possessing extraordinary properties such as green phosphorescence when exposed to a strong light source and patchy blue to green fluorescence in short- and long wave UV-light, again with green phosphorescence (no blue).
Such items appeared multiple times in the last two years at our laboratories. They are sold at very high prices of thousands of US dollars per piece or sometimes even per carat. The first specimen we have tested, initially appeared in Burma (Myanmar) in 2014. Similar material appeared as carvings on the Chinese market according to an article published on the website of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China.
The analyses showed that this material is a synthesized aggregate material (Figure 4). The material was first synthetized in Russia in 1976 as Sr4Al14O25 and published by Nadezzhina (1976), Kristallografiya, 21, 826. The literature from Chinese researchers (Chengkang et al. 2006) confirmed that this type of material was later doped with Europium (Eu) on Strontium (Sr) position, which creates phosphorescence.
Detailed XRD analyses revealed that the material we had tested also contained a minor secondary synthetic phase of SrAl2O4 in addition to the material mentioned above, actually identifying the pebbles as an aggregate of two structurally different synthetic substances. Additional ED-XRF analyses confirmed the elements Strontium (Sr) and Aluminum (Al) but showed that instead of Europium (Eu), the major REE element was Dysprosium (Dy).

Just last week I was approached by a gem dealer with exactly same pebble and I was surprised to see that much phosphorescence. Until know I wasn't sure about it. Thank you for posting this video, and research references. Now I can educate others about it.

From Wikipedia/2019: Dysprosium is a chemical element with symbol Dy and atomic number 66. It is a rare earth element with a metallic silver luster. Dysprosium is never found in nature as a free element, though it is found in various minerals, such as xenotime. Naturally occurring dysprosium is composed of seven isotopes, the most abundant of which is 164Dy.
Dysprosium was first identified in 1886 by Paul Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran, but it was not isolated in pure form until the development of ion exchange techniques in the 1950s. Dysprosium has relatively few applications where it cannot be replaced by other chemical elements. It is used for its high thermal neutron absorption cross-section in making control rods in nuclear reactors, for its high magnetic susceptibility in data storage applications, and as a component of Terfenol-D (a magnetostrictive material). Soluble dysprosium salts are mildly toxic, while the insoluble salts are considered non-toxic.

I had purchased one of these stone pendant from Ali express in 2018. It was a green pendant smaller in size with the same photo Luminous property, the seller called it Luminous Flourite stone. But the strange thing is that I had locked it away in a suitcase for months and when one i opened it up it had a faint afterglow. Now i have Masters degree in physics so i was a little worried. There are 2 types of these stone, one is Lighter shade of green in appearance with less of the sparkling on the surface, this one glows green, blue green and sky blue. Then there is another one which is Dark green in appearance and has lots of sparkling on the surface, which glows Dark blue. Under short wave UV, they fluorescence and when u swtich off the light u can see it phosphorescence, both green in colour.

the price of these stones varies from source to source, and depending on the size of the stone, or carving. The ones I have seen range from around $7 for very small 1.5 inch stoned to $120 for a large 4-5 inch stone though some people mark them up much higher in hopes of making a large profit from the sale if they can find an unsuspecting buyer. The carved prices go for more mainly because of the work involved in manufacturing the carvings, and that the carvings are slightly more rare.

Hello Dalin Waldo, may I please see your stone? if it doesn't look like the lab grown specimen in the videa you may have stumbled across an extremely rare supposedly naturally occurring Ye Ming Zhu stone. It is said that perhaps only 23 of these ancient naturally phosflorecent stones are in circulation, as opposed to the many interesting yet synthesized so called "modern ye Ming Zhu" as shown in this videa. Ifinfact you happen to have stumbled across an authentic rare Earth element stone you may be holding onto one of the rarest stonedon Earth, and a very valuable piece... But if it so happens that you don't want it I'd be glad to take it off your hands 🤗

send me the chemical and crystallographic findings, before that I cannot comment on that. It would be a first in the world and normally that should trigger an important publication. We made our analysis at the University of Berne (Switzerland) and have the data on x-ray and chemical composition with us, securing what I said in the movie.
