5 things that makes Nikon Zf even better than the Z9 and the Z8
Let's dive into the distinctive features that make the Nikon Zf a standout camera, and in this exploration, we'll also highlight how it outshines its counterparts, the Z8 and Z9. Uncover the unique powers that set the Nikon Zf apart in the world of photography.
    1. IBIS: Precision in Every Frame
The improved in-body image stabilization (IBIS) system of the Zf is a magical for many photographers. For many photographers, the improved in-body image stabilization (IBIS) system of the Zf stands out as a game-changer. This feature introduces two innovative aspects not found on previous Nikon cameras. Firstly, IBIS can prioritize the area where the focus point is located, ensuring stability even when the focal point is off-center. This enhancement boosts overall efficiency, promising sharp results with shutter speeds up to 8.0 stops longer than without stabilization.
    2. Subject and Eye Detection Mastery
The Nikon Zf's prowess in subject and eye detection, even with manual focus lenses, is a testament to its superiority. The Nikon Zf excels in subject and eye detection, even with manual focus lenses. While using manual focus, the Zf intelligently detects the subject, allowing you to fine-tune focus by zooming in with a simple press of the OK button. This unique capability sets the Zf apart, ensuring that your shots are perfectly in focus every time.
    3. Black & White Magic on the Fly
Imagine the freedom to switch to black and white shooting on the go - a feature exclusive to the Nikon Zf. With a dedicated switch, this camera provides photographers with real-time flexibility, allowing them to seamlessly transition to black and white mode. The absence of this feature in the Z8 and Z9 positions the Zf as a dynamic and versatile choice for those who crave instant creative adaptability. Switching to black and white shooting on the go is a simple but a powerful and unique feature. This real-time flexibility is kind of a super-power where an accomplished photographer can quickly judge a scene and exercise a creative choice. This is absent in the Z8 and Z9.
    4. -10EV Low Light Autofocus: Conquering the Shadows
The Zf boldly steps into low-light conditions with its remarkable -10EV low light autofocus capability, with an f1.2 lens, surpassing both the Z8 and Z9. For an f2 lens, this means the camera can autofocus at -8.5EV. Thanks to larger AF cells and the cutting-edge EXPEED 7 processor, the Zf redefines the boundaries of night photography. It promises exceptional light sensitivity, outperforming its counterparts by 1 EV and 1.5 EV in comparison to the Z8 and Z9, respectively.
    5. Face Detection Marvel: Unparalleled Precision
The Zf's face detection capabilities are truly remarkable, claiming to recognize "the world's smallest face in the frame." With the ability to detect a face occupying only 3% of the longest side of the frame, the Zf showcases exceptional precision. This feature, absent in both the Z8 and Z9, positions the Zf as a superior choice for portrait photographers who demand unparalleled accuracy.
Now that we've explored the standout features of the Nikon Zf, it's clear why this camera is making waves in the world of photography. From precise IBIS to seamless black and white transitions, the Zf goes further than any camera does today from the POV of actual user expectations, surpassing even the Z8 and Z9 in several aspects, while being much more affordable.

Certainly agree with you on those features mentioned, they provide the Zf with an edge in those areas that we hope we can see on the Z8/9, at lease those that are software based. I don't believe they can tweak the IBIS via a firmware but, who knows. I like Sony's manual focus implementation, turn the dial and it zooms in without needing to press a button, couple that with the Zf's manual focus subject detection and it's a feature I would love them to implement on the Z8/9.

It really depends of your purpose as a photographer. You can use this template of what body you really need.
Professional photogs that does a lot of wildlife, high end sports, always on rugged terrain/weather locations, big corporate assignments, or anything that is more rugged situations, not vlog friendly... go for z9.
Professional photogs that does more events, weddings, fashionshoots, portraits, more medium terrain and medium situations, some wildlife, some sports, a lil bit of street photogs and some star photography, not vlog friendly... then get the z8.
Pro photogs and hobbyist that wants to slow down, take a moment to take the shot, street photography, light terrain, landscape and some starlight photography, some portraits, and people that likes the old slr nostalgia and vlog friendly... then go for zf.
These also depends on the budget too on what you intend to "need" on what you do. So the videography also plays in factor and also the weight and compactness for a travel camera.
In other words... all 3 are good, just depending your purpose are.

The ZF's pure electronic silent shutter is actually surprisingly good, jello effect is very controlled and minimal, as far as casual general photography goes... it's great to have that 14fps or 30fps freedom without thinking of that dreaded shutter wear and tear taking a toll eventually 😊
What's a bit concerning is that silent shutter actually counts as a click and my ZF have gone past 45K actuations already😂

Nicely explained is Zf good for all purpose? Fast sports, landscape and general gathering etc. How about noise in raw in low light. I struggled with Z7ii with on camera flash too much noise in raw. But jpeg pictures are sharp. I sold Z7ii waiting for z6iii if price will be same as Zf then which one is preferable. Zf ergonomics ?? I am seriously considering getting the ZF instead of buying a Sony Body with a 70-200. Just worried about the less function buttons. I need this within March 1st week. Don't think there will be a Z6iii by then. I am not satisfied by the 33MP Sony A7c II/ A7iv sensor for its noise performance to megapixel ratio & Sony colours for Tiger, Lions, Cheetah fur colour. Even the Sony Ambassadors colour of these bigcats looks a bit artificial on social media if there is a high contrast scene. The Sony A6700 has quality control issues. Some cameras are overheating quickly than others, some are freezing up with sigma lenses, some with Sony lenses & some with flashes.
I think the Z6ii & Zf is better with 8 less megapixels than A7iv.
Can the video button on Zf be customised to change focus points & how easy it is to use the AEL lock button as Back button AF ?
I have light lenses only, the 24-70 f4S, 400mm f4.5S & will get the 70-200 f2.8S if I get the ZF as a second body with my Z8.

I got the Zf thinking I’d check it out, get the FOMO out of my system, then return it. 2 months later it’s still in my hands 🤷🏻‍♂️😆
Good observations here, and as much as I love (love!) the Zf - I can’t say it’s “better” than the 8 or 9. It has its own unique qualities, features, and feel - just different use cases. My Z8 is just a different level of capability with its stacked sensor and modern ergos. Even something as simple as the hard rubber dials - makes a huge difference to me.
But yes they’re both amazing in their own way and they’re actually the ideal pair of bodies to have. 🙂

Thanks for your thoughts. I think in some situations, one camera can be better than others. But I wouldn't say that this camera is better than Z8 or z9. It's different way off using. You are right about all points that you spoke, but I think it's different.
It's like the 50 1.2 . It's one amazing lens, but for street photography, in one capital in public spaces.... Maybe can be dangerous. It's one amazing lens, but not for all things. Now it's coming the Z6 lll, and probably it's not going to be better or in the same level as the Z8. Maybe some firmware will push the Z8 and z9 more and more... Who knows? .... The price is not the same.... Quite simple. We see products , the Brand see our pockets and what they can offers. The Z6 lll is going to be competitive. I hope it will sell well, I really hope it's going to be one good camera and i trust them. I like Nikon cameras more than others brands. Tends to be durable.

That camera needs a great IBIS because of the shitty ergonomics. And the fact you can't get sharp images at less than 1/4s is proof of that. With my A7R5, which has a worse IBIS rating, I can shoot 1s long exposures with a very high keep rate. I mean, one can do 1s exposures with wide angle focal lengths even with a little Olympus EP7...
Now, you said you can use the finger to move focus point when shooting through the EVF. Can you reassign the 4way controls to other functions? Not familiar with the Zf, but my Zfc has a shockingly low degree of customization possible, which is really disappointing.

Get one before saying nonsense. If you don't know why its ergonomics are the way they are, do some research.

Both the Zf and A7R V have 8 stops of stabilization, as far as getting sharp shots at low shutter speeds handheld, that is dependent on the individual shooter more so than the camera. The A7R V’s 8 stops is rated with a 50mm 1.2 GM lens, while the Zf’s rating is with the long end of the 24-120 f4 lens. The camera system will aid you in getting the shot but, it’s not going to be the same for everyone, every time. When I was younger, I could do 1 second shots, with good results after a few attempts, the best I could get from the A7R V coupled with the 24-120 OSS lens, handheld, was 1/3 stop. I’ve played with the Zf but don’t own one to attempt that.
