Man I don't know what you do for your 9 to 5 job but someone should hire you full time figuring out very important stuff like this. Well done sir, hats off to you👍
I sure wish you a neighbor of mine! Few folks shoot around where I am. Nobody cares that I shoot but they just are not interested in the sport themselves. I appreciate your time and effort to put these videos together! Thank you Sir!
James,
You give me so much to think about, my head hurts!
Keep up the good work.
Great video! Thanks for all the info.Your description and graphics were super helpful in understanding. I've been testing an old factory 1022 and a marlin micro groove with several different types of food. They're each incredible(near match level) with certain flavors and feel like I'm throwing rocks with other stuff, but they never like the same thing. Your video has provided a better understanding of why.
Thank you!
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this!
I really like your videos, you are always straightforward and informative as well as very relatable, if we were neighbors, we'd be friends.
Outstanding analysis you've done sir, you have educated me and inspired me to do further detailed exam of my own rifles. You are a wizard of .22cal ballistics as far as I'm concerned.
Carry on!
I really appreciate the tips from you. I've taken your advice with my standard 10/22 carbine. Keep up the good work!
Glad to help
Most unique approach to achieving accuracy. This was excellent.
love the background. Keep up the good work man.
Thanks!
Good video. I'm learning. Thanks.
Using CCI standard velocity on my 10/22 with a ER Shaw bull barrel, I use a rim gauge to sort the rounds, getting 50 yard groups a nickel covers. Found the tightness of the barrel retaining screw is critical.
Great work...very informative....I have done some research into other factors. One thing I have found is that the chambers vary a lot. There are perhaps10 different reamer profiles for match rifles alone. Groove diameters also vary...Generally match barrels have very slightly tighter bores. When you couple these differences to the slight varying specs of different bullet manufactures, it explaines why some guns prefer certain ammo while others prefer others. But generally better ammo is made to more exacting specs. I like your approach to the testing...Good results.
Very much appreciate your diligence.
Thanks!
Great video again James 👍👍
Thanks Mike!
Great breakdown,
SUBBED !!!! really dig'n your effort and explanation.
Solely on the strength of this video, I purchased, for the first time in my long life, some Aguilla .22 40-grain long rifle ammunition in both the standard velocity and the high velocity. I took them out to the range this morning and tried them out in my 10-22. Both performed very well at 50 yards with target grade groups. The carbine is the factory standard model except that I swapped out the trigger group for the Ruger target grade trigger group and mounted a big, fancy 3X9 variable telescopic sight. The hundred yard groups were both very poor at four and a half inches. Functioning through the action was perfect for both types. I have had similar experience with Remington Target and other loads with that carbine/scope combination. I think that basically I have an excellent 50-yard carbine/scope combination, but 100 yards is just overmuch for practical accuracy. I further suspect that the cause is the scope being parallex adjusted for 50 yards. Now that I have the ammunition, I think that I shall next try it out in my Savage 1919/33 NRA model with a micrometer peep sight. I suspect that the Aguilla ammunition shall do very well at both distances inasmuch as parallex is not germaine to iron sights.
Very good information James interesting 👍
Thanks man!
You just gained a new subscriber! 👍 i really like your videos, keep it up !
Welcome aboard!
Thanks again for the great information James 🤔💡.
Liked, loaded and shared 🤜🔁🤛.
Take care ✌️.
Cheers 🙏😷.
Much appreciated
It makes sense now. My kral puncher braker has thinner rifling grooves and it likes the 23gn slugs. while the benjamin kratos has thicher rifling groove and it prefers heavier slugs. This helps alot.
Nice!
Love the videos man would love to see one of your gun collection that match 10/22 looks awesome
thanks!
Hell Yeah good to know. Love them 22s. You can’t beat them. 22lr and 12 gauge should be first on new gun buyers list.
Great video brother keep up good work.
Hi James, thanks for the info on the bore of a 10/22. On the 10/22 are the lands wide or narrow ?
Love your channel, I am learning so much.
God Bles , be safe. Walter
Great vid!
Thanks!
I've got a kidd barrel on my 10/22. now, the factory barrels chamber was oversized, the fired cases were all blackened, showing cases where not obturating correctly
What do you think about hexagonal/polygonal rifled barrels, like the glock? It seems to me that eliminating lans and grooves altogether would keep the barrel more clean, improve bullet shape and flight, and improve accuracy.
Plinkster science. Great vid
Thanks!
Another great video James. I’ve been doing some research on matching barrel and bullet diameter size and went back to watch your swaging video. I always knew guns like different ammo and you explained why in that video. I just watched a video of a guy swaging live rounds to .225 in a reloading press. What’s your thoughts on that. Keep up the good work buddy. Thank you very much.
I have couple of the swages myself , its tedious process...definitely alot of trial and error
NICE WORK JAMES, with your help i'm getting there. do you know if the ruger american is the same as the 10/22 barrel
thanks! not sure on Ruger American but I I can't see why the barrel would be too different
Enjoyed the video i was wondering have you shot and tested the Herters .22 bullets. We grabbed some this last week. Ive seen a few videos but was wondering if the master of 22lr has any input. Thanks for demonstrating catching those bullets pretty cool.
I read and replied to your Facebook message, name sounds familiar but I never tried them
How do you headspace your ammo? Do you compete in Benchrest (BR 50) matches? Do you like Walther or Douglas air gauge barrels for your 10/22?
Subbed! I like your stuff man! Great thinking and not just throwing money at it and bragging about all the brand names high dollar stuff
Awesome! Thank you!
Matching ammo/ bullet to barrel /chamber is nessacary in all rifles and calibers. I certainly respect your commitment and innovative ideas. Thanks for sharing. I am planning to get a 22lr semi auto and had decided to go with 10/22 carbine because so many have stated how dependable and durable they are. I also have been interested in match shooting in 22 lr. Would you recommend a factory rifle that be a great start for precision shooting. You said the basic Ruger carbine 10/ 22 shot respectable groups when matched with compatible bullet / mv.
Didnt hear you mention but imagine you have tried match ammo IE Lapua match 22.
Im not disagreeing with your results just trying to satisfy questions in my head. Thanks for your advice.
EXCELENTE MY FREND.......................MAXIMO TYRANO.........LIKE UP
Thanks!
I’m going to be casting some 40 gr lead bullets. I could slug them through all of my 22s before I start loading.
I have a Tippmann m4-22 - what subsonic ammo do you suggest for this? (I run it suppressed)
What cartridge do you recommend for the Thompson Center CLASSIC semi auto loader, please sir? I enjoy your channel!!
Thanks! From what I researched, I'd try CCI minimag or Aguila superextra copper
Love you videos how long do you think the mossberg will last
Its lasted already 7 years for me, hopefully many more
Pretty cool.
thanks!
Is it possible to measure the depth of the groove in the bullet ?
Not that you need one, but I could see you loving a cz trainer or a cz jaguar.
PS, are you shooting 10 shot groups at 50 or 100 yards? Try some old Federal Classic HV ammo in your 10/22. Just regular500 rd bulk pack!
I wonder what my Marlin Micro Groove barrell would do.
Please test the Marlin with MicroGroove rifling. You may find perplexing results compared to the tests you have completed. I have an AR-15 in 5.56 mm with .22 LR conversion kit. I shoot 22 LR in 1 in 8 twist 5.56 barrels with interesting results.
Yeah my Marlin XT22 microgroove is different than standard rifling, it does prefer longer bullets, Aguila SuperExtra Copper is most accurate then CCI minimag
@@STKO2011 Really ? i've got ELEY Sub Sonic to group 1/2 in at 100 more consistently...will have to look for a box of Aguila SuperXtra...have fun
I know a guy who is testing 60gn bullets for long distance (200+ yards) The slow spin rate is a killer. Last I heard he was looking to try a fast twist barrel....Have you tried any of those 60gn cartridges in the fast twist barrsl?
My question is about the longevity of the mossberg. Not bashing it just the 10/22 has proven itself to last 50-60+ years. Maybe that’s why ruger put such weird rifling??
The twist rate does NOT change in relation to the land and groove width ratio. Incidentally neither does the land and groove diameter which does have a SAAMI specification. The only thing that does not have a SAAMI spec is the land and groove width ratio.
Do you find that Aguila ammo stinks as its fired? Its very different than other manufacturers
Interesting. So what is your take on Marlin's micro grove rifling?
It seems to like longer bullets like the Aguila Super Extra High velocity or CCI minimag
Hi James, what s the bore da. of the Ruger 10/22 and Ruger PR? Thanks Walter
10/22 is .221 groove/.217 lands
Very interesting that the groove WIDTH difference make such a difference. That said, it might have been good to also get the other-two dimensions....to offer a more complete picture of what's going on....meaning......what is the corresponding barrel Land diameter?...and barrel Groove diameter? .. for each barrel. Why do I say this?---> because if you take something like a Waltz resizing die.....after its use it slightly "increases" the diameter of the bullet after the bullet is squashed after resizing, ....so that the fatter bullet then compresses MORE against the lands and grooves...and is more uniform in diameter. Without a doubt this increases accuracy.
Good job keep up the great work
Thanks!
I have three MARLIN rifles, two model 80 bolt action and one model 60 they all shoot better than my Ruger10/22. btw my oldest MARLIN is from the40s
Nice!
Marlin were accurate years ago, the most accurate l have shot is the Winchester pump my had hammer and all
A lead fishing line worm weight is very close to the same size as a 22 they will shoot from an air rifle if you wear down the weight i little. Just in case
Ouch!! My Foot))))
Accuracy is ALL ABOUT HARMONICS period more people need to realize that, your barrel nut and action screws directly affect the barrel harmonics.you can either tune the load to the barrel (harder and more expensive and you are at the will of the ammo company with .22lr) or tune the gun once you realize how much harmonics play a role in Accuracy it's a cake walk
Which is your favorite break barrel. 22 air rifle....
Currently Gamo Swarm series
That bullet catch tank is a cool idea. One thing I'd change though would be to put it on dirt when firing, so just in case you get a bullet that really tears through there, the worst it can do is go in the dirt instead of bouncing off the concrete. I can't imagine a 22LR would have enough energy to be dangerous after three pillows and a whole tub of water, but it doesn't hurt to be over cautious.
I have mkii fv my question is on the back of the chamber there isn't even a break edge or a chamfer where the bullet goes into the chamber/breach, I'm wondering if that's normal or if they skipped an operation when manufacturing the gun because when I chamber a round it just scratches my bullet is it goes into the chamber period and it's a pretty deep gouge that's happening any thoughts ? Should I polish or put a chamfer on it ? ?
That seems to be the norm on Savage barrels for some reason...either use a bullet that doesn't get gouged as bad or add chamfer
I noticed the barel band on your rifle. What kind and how do you install it?
10/22 barrel band ...slides on and screwed tight
Nobody discovered this before for a very good reason.
Bullet engagement to rifling has been looked at form many years as has slugging a barrel. The simpler and more direct approach to accuracy is to shot small amounts of different ammo to find the one that works best in your rifle.
? please a little off topic.......when my bolt passes over the remaining rounds in my magazine it leaves a distinctive gouge on the round left in the mag......is there a fix or do i need a new bolt
They all will gauge the bullet at some point so either you should shoot one shot at a time in the magazine. Or you'll have to adjust the magazine tension.
Fantastic vid, never thought of any of this stuff tbh.
Awww shit. Jimmy's back. Hate the clickbait, love debating the physics!
NICE CLOSET IF ITS ONE ..I WILL SLEEP IN IT.. SURROUNDED BY MY FIRE ARMS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AIR GUN SCIENTIST...U ARE DOING A GREAT JOB👍👍👍
Thanks man!
My challenge is that I would like to be able to control nuisance squirrels in a neighborhood environment. My plan would be to use subsonic 22 ammo with a bolt, or lever single-shot action to minimize noise. I have concerns with the correct mussel twist for maximum accuracy. I am wide open for advice on riffle brands and ammo. Any suggestions?
You can go air rifle if needed that way you don't have to worry about stray bullet
Air rifle is a great solution
Hey James. I have a CZ455 .22lr and it seems to always throw the cold bore shot. After that it stacks everything at 50yards. Great for shooting paper not so great for hunting. Any suggestions you can recommend for a remedy?
try this method, it knocked out the first flier for me....czcams.com/video/zbZhrcpEZU0/video.html
@@STKO2011 interesting, I’ll give this a test. Would be amazing if it was that simple. Thanks
@@seanmcculloch154 Did this work?
My Marlin Glenfield model 25 has the micro groove rifling. Have any experience or heard of it? It's been touted over the years as being great. It would really be awesome if you could get us some science on it. Please. I would really like to know and thoroughly enjoy that vid. Maybe even watch it 5x or more.
Yes, Aguila superextra copper is most accurate I've shot in my Marlin XT, newer version of mod 25...next best CCI minimag 40gr or 36gr hp
@@STKO2011 awesome. I didn't know the about the newer xt model! I'm in TN. Aren't you Indiana?
@@joshuagibson2520 yep, my XT is hanging right behind me in the wood stock
@@STKO2011 at 100 yrds i have shot a 5 shot group at 7/16 " with 36 gr mini mags with my xt-22 . I have the Aguila super extra have not tried with them yet. It should be interesting
@@43dukedog nice!
What would you guess would shoot the best out of a marlin model 60?
CCI minimag
@@STKO2011 thank you! Those are among the rounds that I'll be testing.
Best at 1.50 playback speed or you’ll fall asleep
Think those pillows have any I'll effect in shape of the bullet or anything? Could you have just shot it into the water alone?
Not affecting the bullet in pillow but shooting just in water will bend the bullet
Hello, what do you think about this gun? Hatsan striker edge .22 and .177, i want to hunt doves, squirels etc.. will it be enough? And would you recommend me .22 or .177 maybe in future i would like to hunt something bigger like a small hog, btw great videos, i really like your content ! 👍
I dont have any experience with Hatsan but if you plan on using it for bigger game, id use 22cal personally
Another thought provoking video! Would you say that the barrel with wider lands and grooves benefits from the longer bullet because of the increase in surface contact. In other words, to compensate for the decrease in surface contact as compared to the narrower lands and grooves barrel version?
I think that it would be helpful if you would put together a table of bullet lengths so that we could verify the results with our own 22 caliber rifles. This would speed up our ability to match ammo to barrels.
Great job! Thanks!
Thanks, I am definitely working on something
What happened to your pumpkin?
Got smashed
Yeah...... don't do that on concrete. Otherwise good info!
Bro what are you doing in the closet? 😂
you should get a TIKKA T1X man that sucker can in hole it.

Hahahahahahahaha!
Don't know what so funny...
