  • An old-fashioned cottage garden is a magical place. It is beautiful and practical, wild and cultivated. It is a place of amazing smells and delicious food. I’ve been dreaming of the moment I could put in my long-term cottage garden, filled with culinary herbs, medicinal herbs, cosmetic herbs, cut flowers, veggies, and quiet sitting places, for years! And here it is!
In this video, Carolyn shows you the transformation from grass to (baby) cottage garden. We’ll talk about the plants that are in it and about the design ideas that helped shape it. For more details, and step-by-step instructions, visit the blog post here: homesteadingfamily.com/design...
Grab your list of the plants that I have growing in my cottage garden and their uses here: www.schooloftraditionalskills...

Hey Carolyn, the way you planned this garden, and the way it looks later, is the way we usually plan and plant our gardens where I come from. Not always with all usable plants, usually with perennials and ornamentals, but combinations make the best gardens ;)
Right now I am planning to add more herbs and spices in the garden close to our house. We hope to be able to rent a plot of land next season, to use for vegetables.
In The Netherlands most people who live in the city or in some town, who love plants and have the space for it, have gardens like a cottage garden, or sort of the same in pots for the balcony. Some have a little plot of land somewhere on the outskirts of the town, for flowers or veggies.
Often, when we see streets of cities or towns in the US (in movies or via googlemaps) we marvel about the lack of plants and the excess of grass around the homes. Ah well. The joy and adventures of different cultures ;)
Take care, God bless, and lots of love,
    Diana

Your cottage garden is looking great! It will be exciting to see more of it as it grows and begins to fill in the space. I love that you will have a seating area to enjoy your coffee! And how fun to have a path through the beans for the littles. Thank you so much for the list of plants you're using in this garden.

I’d love to see updates at different stages of growth. How are you going to to treat it for winter interest as it is so close to the home? Love your labels. I used branches to create teepees as well. Still working on creating a low waddle style edging. Are you going to create a children’s garden? I’m considering to create an adjacent area for my grandchildren to garden with miniature varieties of edibles and dwarf flowers. Please share your sorrel soup recipe. Thanks for sharing !!

Beautiful!! How do you keep control of grass or weeds growing in your beds? What are you using the hay for?

Hay controls grass and weeds and as it decomposes, it mulches right in as a compost. At least that's what I use it for. :)

I have never grown a cottage garden or an herb garden, so my question is two part: First, can I put herbs in pots in the cottage garden and then bring them inside in the fall to keep them going over winter? Or is it better to just put them in the ground (especially perennials) and then preserve the harvest in the fall? Thank you!
