    I have some beautiful clumping bamboo plants in my yard that are tropical plants that should not be doing well in my climate (Zone 8 area). My temps get to 20 degrees sometimes and the plant leaves will burn a bit, but these plants are huge and recover quickly. These are great plants to have when you garden, since you can build so many things with bamboo (trellises, birdhouses, etc). I have beautiful yellow/green culms and dark green. Love my bamboo!

    What was the reason why you replace your spectabilis running into a clumping? We had clumping before and after 6 years, it was declining and the middle part looks dead. I live in zone 9 btw. Did you put a barrier around your clumping? And running as well? I am jealous at how beautiful your grove looks. I am now having spectabilis running because it was too painful to dig the clumping and cut the culm to maintain it. Was your running bamboo tougher to cut?

    Hello. Two years ago I planted 7 bamboo trees along my fence. I was told by the nursery that they were clumping bamboos. To make story short 2 years later i found out they were running bamboos because there were tons of new culms popping up my yards. I rototiller the yard and dug up the stalks. I used vinegar, salt and dish soap to kill the remaining culms. It's pretty much contained. My question is how long do i have to wait to actually know if all the rhizomes are dead? Will they come and grow again? Thanks.

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  Před 2 lety +1

      Good question. I don’t know. If you dug them up within two years you probably got them all. I started out with running bamboo and I kept it about two years. It wasn’t too hard to get rid of. I was wondering the same thing but if you do a thorough job of digging them out you’re probably good.

    • @ameliawest8896
      @ameliawest8896 Před 2 lety

      @@myboringchannel thanks for the quick response. It's only been a month when this happened. Everyday i check for new shoots. And everytime i see them i dig them out right away. Their stalks were cut up in segments due to rototilling the yard. But some of the stalks still have live rhizomes and that's what I'm still dealing right now. Not much though. They're kind of yellowish so it means they're dying for lack of water or maybe the mix vinegar and salt I've been pouring. I cut the culms then pour the mix vinegar into it's tube. In that way the vinegar will run thru it's stalks killing the entire growth. I'm just afraid that if i plant new plants or grass back and start watering that area, bamboos may come growing again. They're just grass or weeds. You start watering them, feeding them, and they'll come back to life all over again. Maybe i should wait for a year?

      use a thing like "underground fence" to control the roots is a must (not know what is it called), if not, it will grow under the fence. better not grow near neighbors fence, because when the bamboo flowering, the seeds drop to neighbors yard, will need to pay for it and dig them out.

    which clumping bamboo is the best one to take care of, the least messy etc...? I live in california in zone 9 i think. Need about 13-15ft in height and about 20 ft to 30 ft wide to block my 2 story neighboor house.. I heard I can get this clumping bamboo 10-15ft tall already? Somebody told me I can grow them in pots but eventually have to take them out of the pot and plant them in the ground?

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  Před 3 lety

      They are all a little bit messy in terms of dropping leaves underneath them. The robusta is probably the most sun tolerant but most clumpers would prefer some afternoon shade for the best results, especially in an area like zone 9 which I think is Southern California. In Western Washington, I’m growing the robustas in full sun and they do very well. A little tighter habit, and a little lighter green. Where you are, I think they would get some leaf burn in full sun. The height requirements sound good, but keep in mind they get very wide. Mine are currently about 7 feet wide and getting wider.
