    In today's episode of AccessToPower we will wire up a forward reversing starter. We will show how the mechanical and electrical interlocking works and how to do a proper forward and reversing starter in order to keep personnel and equipment safe. There are many different ways to achieve a forward and reversing starter setup. This is one of those methods.

    Wow. If only every Jman could explain topics like you do. Break it down wonderfully and kept it simple. Love the schematic drawing on the side that highlights what's live and what is not. I'm sure that will help with more complicated wiring.

    This is great and much appreciated. Refreshing my memory for garage door openers and this is exactly what I need to see. You explain everything very clearly. The wiring diagram on the side is PERFECT. It crosses the bridge between the paper and real world application.

    this is incredible with the diagram in the corner. in most video's you just see people connecting stuff but you dont know what the contactor is labeled or what terminal they are putting it in.
    I have installed and wired pretty much every device in industrial construction in the field, but sadly not even once have i had the opportunity to actually wire any contactor, relay, or any control related device.

    Could you add the terminal numbers? 13/14, 95/96? as example. I have found that this helps students keep track from the drawings to the components. No complaint just a suggestion. Great videos, well done and easy for folks to follow. I like how you split screen to show component and drawing simultaneously.

    I always teach to only swap A & C phase to reverse the phase rotation. This prevents accidentally burning stuff up in the rare time one may have to deal with the high leg on a 120/240 3 phase feed. (Code here is the high leg must be on B Phase)

      That is a good idea. Especially if the control voltage is 240 volt delta. But it is a good practice to teach newbies as it eliminates possibly making a mistake when the voltage, or high leg information is not understood or known. And yes, High Leg is most often on B Phase in the field... but there are some utilities that provide the high leg on C phase and it must be switched after the MSB to B phase on all Panelboards, and MCC's. This too can be a bit confusing and cause people to make mistakes. Thanks for your comments and sharing your best practices with the community.

    Nice in depth explanation video. I'm looking for info just like this. I am looking to wire up something like this for my cargo lift in my garage, three phase worm gear drive motor system. Looking to have EMO, up and down fixed on second floor and the same for first floor. Also looking to have one on the platform wall so when I'm riding it. Would the switches need to be three way.

      Nice! This could work, but you also may want to add limit switches for the “at top” and “at bottom” locations which break the holding circuit as well. This will ensure the lift stops when it reaches your desired location. For Saftey purposes you may also add 2 additional limit switches for over travel which are tied into your Emergency Stop circuit. This is to protect you in case the normal limit switches malfunction and the lift doesn’t stop where it is supposed to, the over travel switch’s will trigger the Emergency Stop.

    Can you do a video of a VFD with a remote switch control with an E-stop and, an of/on switch, a forward/reverse, and a potentiometer all to be used in a milling machine. The drum switch currently on the machine reverses almost instantly (needed when tapping); it is not necessary to stop the motor and then energize the reverse switch.

    Good videos. However. those devices are not starters. they are contactors. A starter is a contactor plus and overload relay. When you added the overload relay, they became a starter.

    Nice video but I think it's way easier to have 1-0-2 switch so you can't mix direction and it's really simple.
    I think this could be useful in bigger machines but then it's better to add PLC
    And I'm all about safety and working with live wires is not my thing.

    How does this work for a 130 vdc, 25 amp dc motor? I’d like a forward, stop, reverse buttons for this but I don’t know what I need or how to wire it. I’m using a 4.25 hp Leili treadmill motor.

    This system seems as if it would make a great dumb waiter set-up, how would you incorporate limit switches into this system? Fyi you have awesome teaching skills, very informative without going over doing it. Lmk thanks

      This would work for a dumb waiter setup with the addition of 2 Normally Closed limit switches. If forward is up then I would place the top limit switch in line just before or after the existing NC “R” contact on the rung that powers the forward starter. When the waiter gets to the top the forward starter would loose power as the limit opens. You could then add a bottom NC limit just before the reverse starter coil to stop the waiter when it reached the bottom.

    I have an old conveyor belt and it has a similar circuit to this BUT if the motor is spinning clockwise and you push the momentary switch to engage the counter clockwise position it auto cancels the other contactor and engages the other contactor. Do you have a video that explains this wiring?

      It sounds like you are missing the normally closed electrical interlocks.

      Grumman, I looked a bit more at your question and what is different about your forward/reversing setup is that your interlocks are not being controlled by a normally closed contact from the starters, but by normally closed contacts on the buttons.       @@kyliejoe91 The only difference between a contactor and a starter is that there is an overload relay connected in series in line with the controlling contactor. This overload relay is what protects the motor from burn out if something goes wrong with the mechanical load such as a conveyor belt jamming or a bearing seizure. Some starters even have a phase loss feature which shuts off the motor if one of the phases is lost due to a storm for instance. This will also prevent motor burn out due to single phasing.

    This video is good but it would have been a whole lot better if he broke down where the wires are attached from and where they are coming from such as when he was installing the wires for the hold button so they will not be operating like a momentary button. He should also show the pieces and model numbers on the screen. But he should’ve broke down where each wire was coming from and where it’s going and zoomed in so people could see it. I would say he should remake this video and be more in detail.

    This isn't the right way to do a forward/reverse motor controls it does not meet IEEE standards of manufacturing nor it meets electrical trade industry requirement, further more it will be difficult to troubleshoot in case of failure.
