  • So, how do you get your flash to focus at night?
    - For this video I am using the Godox V1 flash!
    - You're going to want to point your flash directly forward
    - When it's pitch black, there's no light, so there's nothing for your camera to catch focus on
    - While you're shooting, what you'll want to do is turn on your light and point it at your subjects (so it's kind of like a spotlight)
    - The flash will go off when it catches focus!

It’s called a modelling light, most speedlites actually have a focus assist beam though.

Yeah, but in really dark locations even that fumbles and hunts sometimes. The V1 modeling light is pretty powerful, to the point that people do shoots with it by itself without flash sometimes with great success.

@@jasonbodden8816 I wouldn’t necessarily agree. Having used Nikon’s Flagship speedlights for quite a while now their system works incredibly with their modelling lights. Never missed a shot due to the modelling light alone.
V1’s light is very good though. I agree with this and can recommend that you leave it on. Cheap flashes with weak focus assist and modelling lights are a no go.

@@jonathans.3128 Yeah the assist beam helps even in pitch black situations, but mirrorless cameras can't see the lights. Only dslrs

This modeling light from the V1 is super handy for those who shoot on mirrorless bodies. The focus beam doesn’t actually “work” on mirrorless only on Dslrs for now. Hopefully one day it’ll be the case that flashes do kick out the focus beam for mirrorless cameras.

I'd go with the V1's modeling light any day over the Focus Assist beam on any other speedlight because those beams fumble in very dark locations sometimes (God knows why). The V1's modeling light is very powerful and will get you focus every time.

@@jasonbodden8816That's completely unusable in fast paced nightlife enviroments where you're bouncing the flash off the walls. Am I supposed to lower the flash down between every 2 shots to help the camera focus them move the flash back to whereever I originally wanted to have it?

One of the V1 accessories is a bounce card and that directs the modeling light forward without having to bend forward the flash @@dbauernf

There’s a mode that should be on a majority of cameras i don’t know if it’s called something different but for canon if you disable the expo simulation it over exposes your image on your screen so you can see what your doing in either low light or no light just a tip if the modeling light doesn’t do it for some

Your camera has a tiny light that does this for you already. And you have a setting called Low Light AF Priority that also helps with this using a wide aperture for a split second when focusing. Your welcome..👌💯

I AM TRYING TO FIND a solution but nowhere on the internet can I find an answer. 1st of all!! When you shoot with the V1 godox flash, does the modeling light come out on its own so you can focus??? Is it like prefiring so you can focus and then the flash fires off? If yes, thats amazing. But from my understanding the V1 has to be manually activated and it stays like this the whole time. Meaning that if you are in a nightclub or at a night event photography, you will be like a firefly at the whole event and that sucks. You don't wanna be the main dish for someone's event, you will be noticed enough with the flash that will go off all the time.
2nd, this is not a question but information for MIRRORLESS photography with flash. I use a Sony A7 III which means that it does not read the red focus assist beam of the flashes. But with godox there is a solution which is... you buy for example Godox tt685s and the transmitter the godox xt2s. For some weird reason the x2ts sends a bigger red focus assist beam and it works on the mirrorless camera (AT LEAST ON THE sony a7 III & A7 II) . That's how you focus at night with flash photography on a mirrorless camera.
It's weird how there is no flash in the market for the mirrorless cameras.
