  • Saved some money by replacing the belts on my Honda 2417 tractor mower myself. Honda make removing the deck easy to do and the whole changing the belts job was easier than
I thought it would be. You will need a socket set and a wrench / spanner set to do this job.
    Cheers Gerry

4 years ago, your videos helped me sort out my ancient oil burner (and now runs quieter and more efficient) and now you've been invaluable for my tired old Honda Mower. I have now replaced this damned timing belt about 4 times over 3 years, but with spurious ones. Am going to buy a genuine belt this time and hope it lasts at least a couple of years.
I know 2 of the previous breakages were due to sticks etc on the lawn, but why it failed yesterday I have no idea.

Great video Gerry. Got my mower back after 3 weeks of it being away being serviced, tuned up and put back in good condition. First time out I then ran over an exposed tree root, which I know is there and in 5 years I have missed it by taking extra care. Misjudged it this time and bang, snap, rattle. Isolated the problem but didnt have a clue where to start, until I found this video. I am a complete novice and this took me a couple of hours to change the belt and have the mower up and running again. A couple of pointers given by my friendly Honda dealer which I dont think are shown in the video.
    1) Remove the grass chute by taking off the grass box, undoing a couple of large bolts (left and right) just inside the chute and pulling the chute out from the back.
    2) Disconnect the blade brake / actuator cable before removing the deck. Its quite tricky to find but it engages / releases the blade brake. Its connected to a spring on the top of the blade deck. I knew about this as I replaced it a couple of years ago.
    3) Release the belt tension screw all the way to allow some slack.
I did have a couple of issues along the way,
    a) the belt tensioner mechanism was locked solid, so slackening 3 nuts underneath ( 1 on each of the smaller pulley wheels and one on the cable guide) solved this along with a small spray of WD40 to free it up. Once the belt was fitted it was then easy to set the tension.
    b) I couldnt get the 2nd large pulley wheel off the spindle (opposite end to the 3 pulley wheels, so needed to remove both belt guards in order to get the belt round.
Only minor hurdles to overcome but wouldnt have had a clue without the video.
As for the mower, I inherited it with my house, apparantley its 10 years old and is still in excellent condition and now 100% working order.
    Many Thanks Gerry

1:19 At long last... a video that shows how to remove the shell covers on each side. I've seriously been looking for years for this information. Thanks so much for posting this video.
My HF 2315 HME has served me well over the past 15 years, and it just wants to run and run. It's seen better days, but it's still a go-er.
However, virtually every time I've got to do a job on the mower deck, I've given up and sent it for repair because I couldn't figure out how these covers came off. Can't believe it's only 3 metric bolts! Been driving me crazy 😵

@@GerrysDiy Thanks again. Finally got time to drop the deck and inspect a serious vibration. Lucky I did, as the steel deck at the shute exit has completely rusted through... not something I would have picked up on otherwise.
The handbook is grossly negligent in its instructions, failing to inform you that the right-rear wheel needs to come off to get to the deck spring control cable and nut. The written instructions are fine as a rough guide, but difficult to follow if you've not seen or attempted this before. I also struggled with those odd cotter pins... not your standard design.
Have already ordered a new deck, and I'll strip the old deck for parts whilst adding a new belt and blades. Plenty life in the old girl yet!
And for anyone who cares about these things, the HF2315 shares the same deck as the HF2113 and HF2114 (as well as some Mountfield, Stigma, and Alpina models), so long as you know the manufacturing year. My machine is pre 2007, so watch out for this if ordering a new deck. Something to do with the blade engagement being either a lever (pre 2007), or a switch (2007 onwards). They are not interchangeable apparently.

Considerably more but it mows well . I also changed the two blades to new ones . As I say it mows great but I’m wondering why there is a vibration increase on the deck on blade engagement, any ideas ,cheers

There is a much easier way to replace the drive belt where you don't have to remove the deck - job done in half hour
    1) Take off the grass bok
    2) Remove two screws that hold sensor alrm for grass bok full
    3) Remove the two bolts inside the grass shoot
    4) Pull out the grass shoot
    5) You now have access to the drive belt
    6) Remove the bolt on the engine shaft (use a vice grips to stop it rotating ,use one of the bars so vicecrips can rest against it )
    7) Drop the two drive shafts on the engine bar
    8) There are two guide red pully need to be loosened so the belt can pop out
    9) The pully on the gear can be taken off to get the belt in/out between the guide stop

Hi Chris. I managed 10 years out of the last one and I think it would be still working if I didn't have a dog leaving things in the grass 😀. Your belt might have been too tight. Make sure you don't have movement on the top toothed pulleys. If there is a bearing gone it might cause it to chew the belt. If the belt broke fairly clean it might be a tension problem. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry👍

Do I want my mower to be a marvel of engineering? no, that’s why I wonder if these are any good as a used buy?

Hi sargetester99 The blades overlap and I set them at 90 degrees to each other.. They overlap but cant touch. The keyway indicates the direction of the blade. I'm happy to learn more though 😜 Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry
