  • Awesome survivor-spec eighties sporty Toyota with over 245,000 kms on the clock, but the real story of this car is its engine. It's the DOHC 3T-GTE and it features hemi-chambered, 8 valve head, twin spark plugs, a CT20 turbo, and was the first turbocharged, twin cam engine built in Japan.

    A very unique engine. 4 cylinder, Turbo charged, 8 valves (two per cylinder), 8 spark plugs (two per cylinder), twin cam (each cam has one lobe per cylinder). I would love to hear such a unique thing running.
    Also, it took me a bit to realize how Daniel pronounced Celica. In the U.S. we pronounce it "Cell-ick-ah", but then we pronounce a lot of things wrong/different.

    Thanks for the shout-out Daniel! And you're right: the Aussie AE86 waa sold as the Corolla Sprinter.
    The reason for the Carina front end is because the Carina and Corona share the front doors. I believe the taxi only came with the quad round headlight that was also found on the Corona and Carina van. In principle you could swap the front ends around, just like people did with the Silvia and 180sx S13s. The Corona and Carina wagons also share the entire car except for the front end.
    About the engine: it's a masterpiece by Toyota (or actually Yamaha) and it replaced the aging 18R-G. The engine was indeed over engineered as Toyota developed the 4T-GTEU out of it to feature in the Celica TA64 really and homologation cars. Unfortunately you can't get many parts to tune the 2T-GTEU.
    I was hopeful for seeing an upmarket Corona with parking sensors, but alas the original owner didn't tick that box when he or she purchased it. 😞

    • @irajdesilva
      @irajdesilva Před 3 lety

      Close but no about the taxis...the taxis came with the quad and dual rectangular lights....the dual light arrangement was for a brief time period and was also available in Singapore and Hong Kong as well. It could have very well been that Toyota wanted to finish up some left over stock and just stuck it on there (as they are known to do and call it some special edition with a wierd name comprising of random english words).

    • @banpeinet
      @banpeinet Před 3 lety

      @@irajdesilva maybe these were the later ones? I have an late Corona taxi brochure somewhere which features the round headlights. I do remember seeing the Carina quad headlight ones featured on a taxi somewhere in an old Showa era video

    • @irajdesilva
      @irajdesilva Před 3 lety +1

      @@banpeinet well according to a catalog page and write up the dual lights were there in the DX Super Deluxe grade whilst the STD (I can never stop chuckling over that..neer gets old) got the quad lights. No idea if there was a point in time where it was just one type. ALthough there is a catalog out there that just has the dual light front and just says NEW Corona Taxi. But this small body variant (the one on Daniel's video) did not come out till 1986...before that it was the big body standard Corona with the van front end. I have no idea if the NEW Corona Taxi refers to the change from the big body to the small body or change from a quad to a dual headlight. ***I posted links to images which seem to have deleted my post...so...I suppose links to external pages are not allowed ? I must apologise for getting unnecessarily angry last week. It's a bit of a dream to be a CZcamsr with an audience, but it does come at a cost. Not something I really talk about, because it's kinda depressing. As for the showing of older and/or newer cars, of course the preference is for older cars. I am a slave to my inspiration though, which means I'll show any car that gets me excited. For me to sit at my desk Saturday morning to night editing a video, the car has to be interesting to me. I get that not everyone likes the exact cars I like, so I get that not everyone even in my core audience is gonna bother watching every video. I'm kinda rambling, hey. Anyway, I'm truly sorry, and I'm so glad that you're still watching my vids. It means a lot

    It's in incredible shape! Seeing this era of cars is always bittersweet for me, because always had the most boring versions in Australia that were just so cheap and nasty and had no style. It's like we insisted on getting the worst versions of everything. Like going into McDonalds and getting a Big Mac but actually can I get no sauce no lettuce and oh yeah leave it sitting on the counter for a few hours. Then we all judged these Japanese cars based off what we got.

      The 3T-GTE came in both the TA63 Celica and TA63 Carina. From this generation onwards the Carina and Corona shared the platform (although the model codes did not mirror each other until the 150 series). The Carina/Corona platform had underpinnings of the A60 Celica platform...so yes, engine mounts, etc..would line up between the Celica and the Carina/Corona.
