- Staying inside, can’t get out to cycle, and don’t have a big budget… Well should you choose a set of basic cycle rollers, or a basic turbo trainer?
In this video, I’ll be comparing the benefits and drawbacks of each, from a beginner’s perspective. Prior to filming I’d never actually used any form of indoor cycle training equipment, so if you’re thinking of buying either a turbo trainer, or a set of rollers, and you’re not sure which will suit you, I’ll help you decide.
Got any questions or comments, stick them below 👇 and I'll try and get back to as many of you as I can!

Rollers are great for improving balance, pedal technique and your core strength. I’m disabled and ride 20mins every day in a door way. They have done wonders for me. Love the channel, keep it up!
Your spot on. Rollers helped my pedal cadence tremendously. You'll have a hard time with a choppy pedal cadence. After a couple good falls I did put a set of platform pedals on the bike I was using and built a 4" tall box to dismount onto. I felt like it takes better balance than riding on the road, of course I'm not a pro. LOL!!!
What tires are best for the rollers?
That rear tyre was damn close to the wall when you were on the rollers! Well judged!
Yeah I only actually noticed that reviewing the footage, totally wasnt intentional... but then again, I do like to live dangerously!
I've put ~10,000mi or so on my rollers. You can change the resistance by changing gears. Key to not falling off is to keep your eyes fixed forward (don't look down), such as on the center of a TV screen or something like that. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. The heat build up is brutal on tires, however.
Why has it taken me this long to find your channel - by far the best I've seen!
Thanks Stuart, really appreciate it, good to have you on board!
I was thinking the exact same. Great channel, presenting and budget friendly solutions. Thanks.
Brilliant, bought rollers yesterday and needed some tips and confidence, now can't wait to go again tomorrow. Great channel, thanks.
Awesome Luke! May the force continue to be with you,
Love watching your videos. Stay honest! Thanks.
I'm pleased to hear you like the rollers. I love mine. I do use a turbo too but the rollers feel like cycling. And for not much extra you can get some with magnetic resistance to add a little something
Great video luke... really enjoyed this one. Loved the desk fan and the fall.
Intro in your videos gets me every time. Congrats for creativity.!
Really good to watch this channel grow. Keep it going, Luke. You got this.
Thanks Edison, appreciate the support as always!!!
Enjoyed the video as I was just about to swap my rollers for the turbos. You’ve changed my mind but you have to stay 100% focused on the rollers.
Eyes up! Massively helps with balance ;-)
Thanks for the video, now to hunt down some rollers!
You make excellent videos! I'm not even a road cyclist but I just watch because I like your style. Well done, keep it coming
thanks
Love your videos m8!! keep it going!
Loving the content! Keep it up!
Great information- thank you!
Another excellent Trace Velo production! Love your stuff man.
Thanks buddy, appreciate it!
Excelent video Luke.. The roller type is the only one that I also use.
I have both. Much preferred using the rollers. In fact, after using them all winter of last year, when I started out on the road again after the snow melted, I felt my pedaling technique was better. I actually was faster and less tired than when I trained with turbo trainers.
Great channel, BTW!
Luke you crack me up! Love your frugal tendency!!
Thank you for this. Just got subbed after this video. Keep it up 👍🏾
Really nice video. Well shot. Nice delivery. Quick to the point and not boring at all. Just for your info I just bought a set of elite arion mag rollers. They’re the same as the ones you have apart from they have two additional levels of magnetic resistance (which I haven’t tried yet as I am a massive lightweight) which might go some way to addressing some of the power advantages the turbo has over rollers with no resistance. I really like them.
Damn I was anxious with the wheel riding THAT close to the wall on the rollers!! hahah never would've done that.. was also waiting for the fall, been there.. hahah be aware it gets easier after sometime, tho, been using rollers for 3 weeks now and I can space out on my podcasts or fitness app and still pedal straight no problem - doing good 1-2hours workouts..
Now, I see that Weimo shirt and the Giyo gloves (I have the same ones!) and it brings one subject to the videos.. chinese cycling clothes! Apart from the bad quality "replica" ones, there is good offer of original brands like Santic, Rion, Phmax, Spexcel, Cheji.. All with good products at competitive prices, you should check on that!
Great vid as always! Loved the pro camera and fan setup, and the visual effects are on point.. keep the good work Luke!
Me: Captain he's at it again!!!
Cap Velo: But damn it , he's my best detective
GOD DAMMIT TRACE!
You're chuffing good at this, thank you.
That fan setup is amazing. Chapeau.
Your videos give me life mate, keep it up!
Cheers Austin!!!
really love your videos man! keep up!
Thanks Sam, appreciate it!
I love the Trace Velo videos so much, I watch them several times too.
That's awesome!!! Glad you like my video's Krœn T, thanks for the comment 💯 🙏
I can't think of another cycling related channel that has 100% like rate - shows how awesome your content is. You deserve like 1000x the subs that you currently have, keep up the awesome vids 😘
Thanks so so much, what an awesome comment! 🙏
Doooood you're videos are getting better man, keep them up bruh 😎
Thanks Noorman!!!
Nice catch!
Another thing you may encounter with the trainer and the rollers that close to your wall is debris and shreds from your rear tyre will end up putting a black stripe on your wall.
As a recent subscriber to your channel and a fellow cheapskate, I am loving these videos! Quality entertainment and tightwad reviews. Right up my street. 😁
Hi Luke, I‘m using an improved version of the Elite Arion, called the Arion Elite Smart Digital B+. Is basically the same roller but it has a built in resistance AND interactive (means its Zwift compatible). However my point is is that it can simulate up to 5% slope gradient. Maybe if you want some more adventure you can get it secondhand in the market 😁 i absolutely love it
I have a turbo trainer and I don't use any virtual training app either for the same reason as you. I tried to watch TV shows and CZcams videos, but I found that it doesn't motivate me. Then I found that GCN has some indoor training videos in a similar fashion like a spinning class. I really like those, I sweat much more when I follow one of those. Give it a try on the turbo.
Nice content! Keep it up!
Hi Trace (Luce)
As always, fantastic Video.
I really like your intros and i only can imagine the effort you invest.
And your jokes are funny.
Move on exactly this way and your counter will BLOW-UP.
NOICE, thanks Phillippe!!!!
Awesome vid! I have been thinking about trying the rollers myself.
Thanks Ryan! But yeah, def reccomend it. Takes a bit of practice to master, but well worth it IMO
Precisely what I was looking for, thank you for your video and take difference. Love the call out of being a cheapskate, same here, lol.
agree, a turbo is like a hugely boring torture device whilst rollers has the element of skill and finnesse to them.
Just wanted to say that I only found you a few days ago and I'm already totally addicted! :o) xx
thanks for the video!
I love your videos man!
Thanks dude!
these intros are absolute gold :D Bought a Wahoo Kickr Snap for quarantine and zwift, as a budget smart trainer im finding it amazing.
Thanks Sean, glad you like them! Also Whoo Kickr, freaking great choice if you can afford it
@@TraceVelo it's the wheel on version I bought so not as crazy cost wise as the direct drive ones. I had a normal turbo before and I will say using the likes of zwift makes using a trainer actually fun and not soul destroying 😂 great channel keep it up 👍
Great video Luke! I really like the style of your videos and the funny way you present yourself. Could you tell us about your kit. Your jersey, shorts, and shoes looked really cool.
Just subbed man. I appreciate your cheapskate mindset and aim for simplicity. Most bike CZcamsrs are dropping big bucks or are corporate sponsers. You're kinda just a guy who wants to bike on a budget.
Thoroughly enojy your channel Luke youre a very creative guy.
Good work on the rollers! Rollers fan here too :). With a bit more practice, you'll be climbing out of the saddle and wanting aero bars to practice your TT position :)
I've always been tempted with rollers but I will stick to my fluid turbo trainer and zwift/sufferfest videos to pass the time for now.
Thanks for the vid' Luke
Awesome, no worries dude!
I'm commenting to boost the standing of this content in the algorithm
Nicholas... You legend, thank you, really appreciate it!!!👌😎
I use the Minoura MOZ rollers and they’re perfect, small rollers but smooth and relatively quiet. I rescued an older aluminum Cannondale CAD3 from the trash and restored it…it’s used as my primary trainer while giving my carbon racer a good winters rest. Training rollers are an excellent workout and will leave you feeling well worked when finished, not to mention it works your core by making you concentrate on smooth power transitions, pedal technique and holding a good solid line. I love them….
Another top video Luke - careful on those rollers! Like some others have asked, a review of any clothes you've bought from China would be good too - I've had stuff from Thailand and the sizing is always very hard to get right, plus the fit can be proper wonky, so further input would be useful. Keep up the good work!
I've had this comment a few times. Def going to get that video done in the next few weeks. You're right about fit tho, difficult to get right with cheap jerseys ect
Thank you so much for this video! You show that my Mountain, Roadmaster bike can be used with a bike trainer! Thank you again, Blessings, Nerry Jimenez Now I need to find one at a reasonable price
You did really well for a first try, well done. I've got those Giyo mitts from Aliexpress as well, they are the nicest ones I've ever owned for £6.95 ridiculous!
Use a towel to mop up the sweat and clean the bike after every session.
A floor mat to protect the floor and deaden any noise. I got a six piece one for £10 from Halfords and 3 pieces is ideal for my trainer set up; so I use the other 3 pieces elsewhere.
When I started I used the GCN workout video's on youtube (free) which I found passed the time and gave me a structure to my workout.
Respect with the rollers and as always an entertaining and informative video.
Would warn against hitting the rear brake on the turbo. Tends to melt a groove in your tire :)
Ahh right, good to know, thanks for the tip!!!!
Haha, I love your channel. You make me laugh every video. As a very dedicated indoor cyclist and outdoor mountain biker you will be doing yourself a disservice to not stand and sprint while on a trainer.
Some rollers do have resistive elements. Pretty easy set up. Definitely a roller fan!
I picked up Elite V-Arion rollers for 25 bucks yesterday. They're old, lack any smart features, but the rolls themselves works great. Lots of good deals on the used market, just be sure you check that the rollers bearings are smooth and nice before you hand over the cash.
First 10 seconds and seeing you doing that skit. I already subscribed. Ik this vid is gonna be good
You couldn't have made a better video, seriously, liked before even watching lol
Awesome, thanks Dany 🙏
Watching one of the many FREE training videos on CZcams whilst using your turbo/rollers makes indoor trg much more enjoyable.
When you get more used to rollers you can watch a movie or stand up and sprint, you just need to practice on them a little bit.
😂 love it. After your CZcams career, Hollywood is waiting for you 😬
Nice take on the different indoor set ups turbo vs roller. Now you have 2 indoor devices (watched most of your videos while self isolating), multiple wheels, seats, handlebars etc. Where do you find storage for all of the replaced currently unused bike parts? Now to list the unused parts on ebay so you can get some more parts from ebay and aliexpress to create more content..........thank you for the brilliant humorous content! Next thing we know BBC will have you as a presenter.
A tip for rollers - moving them a little further from your wall gives your elbows and shoulders a bit more freedom to move naturally. A full length mirror in front also helps massively in monitoring your bike placement
I prefer it next to the wall for now, as a bit of a novice, gives me a little bit of assurance in case i need to stop suddenly :S The mirror is a great shout tho!
New to indoor training measure in miles, seasoned indoor trainer, measure in hours 😊 Kudos on the roller mastery tho Luke, it is a surprisingly high and precarious perch when starting... . 😁
Trace back with that good good
A true man of the people everyone Trace Velo for priminster 2020
Based upon this comment, I would like to officially announce my candidacy for 10 Downing street!
Geez, that was a great save from falling off the rollers! Split second reaction time! I would've hit the deck hard as I'm still quite new to clip-in pedals.
Lol, thanks dude. Yeah it was lucky my cleats weren't even tighter. I usually ride them super tight, but happen to have loosened them for the previous video on the Magnesium pedals...
played off that brown pants moment very well mate! :)
thank you for your videos
You're welcome dude 😎
I bought a cheapo turbo trainer and have added sensors and a computer for indoors training. Just got a powerrrrr meter crank and will be using Rouvy linked up to my 10" tablet.
Biggest indoor cycle flex of 2020 😂. Ohhh that made me crack up.
It's nice seeing other people's opinion. I prefer rollers too.
I rode a trainer and spin bike hours upon hours every week when I raced 20 years ago... I think that mental torment permanently ruined my ability to enjoy any type of indoor cycling.
Basic rollers are terrific for warming up, because they also warm-up your equilibrium, brain, and other core muscles necessary for balance, but the resistance is too minimal for serious training... unless you buy a smart roller.
I've tried a Zwift/smart trainer setup and was indifferent, but to be honest, skipping a ride every so often these days for bad weather isn't the end of the world to me; I would rather do other indoor exercise to round out my health. It also just makes me appreciate my time outdoors on the boke that much more and helps burnout.
Nice vid but would like to see your opinion on using a smart trainer and zwift. Changed my opinion on indoor training, not the same as a good outdoor ride but a very enjoyable alternative.
I have used rollers for the past 10 years. After a month of riding on rollers, I became confident enough to be able to watch TV or videos while riding. Originally I was using rollers made with plastic, however, the plastic rollers tended to only last year before they would crack. I spent a larger sum for Kreitler rollers with aluminum rollers and haven't any issues with cracking, nor have I had to replace any parts beyond the elastic band. The only part that I seem to wear out often is rear tires. Between the heat and the weight pressure on the rear, I am only getting about 3 months of riding per rear tire (riding 6 days a week). The front tire doesn't seem to wear as quickly and I replace them every other year. I took an old Schwinn Caliente frame and rebuilt it for use exclusively for rollers. The parts tend not to wear to badly since I am not getting them wet or otherwise facing the elements. I buy 4 of the cheapest Vittoria tires once a year when they are on sale. Thanks for what you do, Luke.
Bloody love me a trace velo video!
The longest i could do on my turbo is about 60 minutes, then the saddle really starts to dig-in. Also, be careful of the impeller housing, on a long session it gets very hot - i have heard the oil inside crackling and popping it gets that hot.
Rollers are difficult because of the concentration aspect, and I have Velodrome Experience so I have done it plenty: I can’t do Zwift/movies and rollers at the same time and therefore rollers are only good for short sessions. (You can learn to do rollers with others things if you have natural bikehandeling skills, but it’s a steep learning curve. (Doorposts And chairs are your friend to keep upright.)
TIP: if you have the space, a Spinning bike will offer a very stable platform (plenty of second hand available) and the once that work with a belt drive are the quietest if you have thin floors/walls/ceiling)
I want a cheap powermeter
Will Trace velo able to provide??
Xcadey, you're welcome
I use the Xcadey I bought from AliExpress for like 180€. Very accurate and nice
Fabian Verolme I have had that one and now I have a carbon power2max with fsa carbon cranks, and I can tell you, they’re not as accurate as you think
@@HeathyRoidz my tacx gives like almost the same numbers
Fabian Verolme I have a tacx flow smart, and the number are different from the powermeter itself, sometimes a 10-15W difference
If you get some wood squares and mount your trainer to the wood you can put a air mattress under it and it will give you the natural sway that you need for indoor riding 😁
Can you please make a video about cheap chinese Lycra? Would be very interesting.
Btw, that intro was genius 👌
I’m already live with the turbo trainer for one month since quarantine
The only thing I enjoy about riding a bike is being outside and constantly thinking my way through complex single track, so rollers aren’t for me.
Great video as always though
Sick intro! 😅
Cracking me up dude! I opt for the rollers, all day long. You’re actually “riding” your bike. Can’t stand a turbo trainer.
"Dumb" trainers or rollers are great, but the speed/cadence sensors aren't great if you're doing structured indoor training. Either a power meter or smart trainer is a huge upgrade when you can actually measure and pace your efforts. But if you're just riding for fitness, it's not needed. I run a power meter with a Kinetic fluid trainer. Great video as always
Well, that's persuaded me to stick with my exercise bike. I can change the resistance up or down. I just go by the feel of it - there are no fancy controls. And it doesn't take up much room, and is ready to go right away.
Thats the thing though, like he alluded to in the video. An exercise bike or a turbo can never improve your actual riding technique like rollers can.
I've never met a bad road rider who uses rollers. They are much more technically competent, can track & keep focused a lot better. People who just use turbos don't have the same ability, they may be physically stronger. But in a group ride I'd sooner take less stronger roller lads than just turbo guys.
Also Trace if you want resistance based rollers look at Elite V-Ario. Its what I use above about 18mph you can definitely feel it. After half hour or so your having to work quite a bit harder. Look at the British cycling website and GCN for training plans. 👍
Great video m8! I have a totally offtopic question, what are those shorts you are wearing?)
Hi. Love the videos. Could you do one with those amazing looking, feature full, cycling computers in Ali Express ?
Hey trace, your channel is gonna spread like wild Corona lol
Ha, thanks Damogan!! 🙏
Hi, new subscriber and really enjoying your content. I’m also a beginner, I got myself a decent bike through the Cycle2Work scheme, but would like to upgrade it. Can you do some more videos on say the first thing to spend your money on? I’ve got a Cannondale CAADX CycloCross bike mainly to keep fit but also used to commute the 20 miles to work, which I’ve done twice now. I’m not fit, I have spinal arthritis, but I do enjoy cycling.
I have some nice rollers I found at a thrift store, used em twice. Tire on trainer? Used it maybe 50 times. Found a used kickr for $400... Used it for 10,000 miles. Just go all the way.
I don't have rollers myself, but from what I've read/been told, you should look forward whilst pedalling, instead of down at your wheel.
“Come off and hit the lino at that speed” lmao killed me
tip on the turbo, don't use your back brake since you create more friction between the tire and the turbo resistance wheel, just let it roll til stop
Rollers are fantastic. You are actually riding/steering, you can't coast, & it is possible to sprint. Don't stare down at the front wheel, it's easier to pick a spot or watch a screen a few feet in front of you. 45 min. on those feels, to me, as good as a 1.5-2 hr. road ride. I always watch Ministry's 'In Case You Didnt Feel Like Showing Up (live)' video, roughly 45 min. There's also a great podcast by a DJ that's a runner, with varying tempos/intensity/mixes, that you could listen to & never repeat. Or to zone out (non-tempo), my friend's podcast, 'Spartacus Roosevelt'.
If you have an ant+ dongle you can use the rgt cycling app which is currently free. Ride real routes like stelvio and cap formentor. Won't alter the resistance on a 'dumb' trainer but certainly easier than staring at a wall.
Great video😀
Considder going for a bikefit after lockdown. Your saddle seams a little too high?
I'd be keen on a cheap AliExpress bike fit too!😁
