In this new book review, I am attacked by flies, I am upstaged by an accordion, and I discuss the book “The Passenger” by Cormac McCarthy, quote by quote. In the Lit Revival of the 2020s, many are attempting to access great literature again but come away scratching their heads. Great names like McCarthy, Dostoevsky, Pynchon and Woolf have come roaring back to center stage, but recent responses to their work paint a specific picture. In his second latest novel (paired with Stella Maris, which is not discussed here), McCarthy presents a vast departure from his typical neighborhood of existence, violence, knowledge, and the untamed West. Started in the early 90s, The Passenger sits flush with his greater interests. It is his New Orleans novel - canon with Sherwood Anderson, Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, and so on down the literary pantheon. Today, we look at inroads to understanding the novel and how we are to stand in awe of it as we are instantaneously silhouetted by its blast radius, muttering something from Hindu scripture.

Just a random guy here, but I wanted to thank you for doing these videos. They are high quality and provide more value than most.
Thank you, random guy
Definitely the most comprehensive review of this book. I finished it and Stella Maris this week, and have been thirsting for more, so I searched for a good review of them. I hadn't found one until i happened upon this one. Thank you for the time you put into this. It was certainly of value. Please keep it up.
I really needed that opening conversation with The Kid explained. I absolutely could not figure out who that character was. Now I can continue the book. Thanks!
I fear I am not smart enough to comprehend most of Cormacs writing, and so this is very helpful at helping me grasp what is being said. I had to read blood meridian 3x and look up a lot of different explanations to fully appreciate it. I may have done too many drugs/drank in my younger years instead of nurturing my brain, and it really bums me out that I took my consciousness for granted. So here we are, trying my best to reverse the damage done in my youth. Thank you for making this video
Thank you for watching! I also abused my noggin plenty in my life, which should give you plenty of confidence.
Thanks. This is really a worth while review. It's the kind of book you dont get done with. Or get over. The questions it puts to us have no answers. They just hang there in that dense McCarthian atmosphere forever. I cant think of a better description of the human situation.
Can’t tell you how grateful I am that you’ve released this! Absolutely love your thoughts. I think that McCarthy however thought Heidegger was “full of shit” per his “couldn’t care less” interview
It's refreshing to see a great analysis of McCarthy on YT, thanks and subbed
I'm excited for this one, I've been waiting for more McCarthy!
More to come! Thanks for watching!
She’s not lying on the ground on the first page! You read the line that says she is hanging among the trees…(small correction)
I tend to miss crucial points in the text, so apologies for this and probably in advance.
@@bookbybookdiscussions Probably not crucial :) thanks for your response!
As a regular reader, I often end up back with a McCarthy.
You have to know a lot to understand these books. Otherwise, they are just an entertaining read. Your observations of time are spot on however. I hope McCarthy is not right but I fear he is...
More please....good sir
Just finished the Passenger and Stella Maris. Thanks for the thoughtful analysis!
Finally read The Passenger and boy oh boy do i need this lol. Hope you are doing well amigo :)
I love you man
Love you Alex, thank you for letting is share in your love of literature!
Really enjoy your ideas, but I have to say the music in the background did make It challenging for me, to concentrate.just an fyi....
Thanks so much! I really apologize, it's difficult to find a time and place for these vids. I promise it'll be much better for the coming videos!
The tower of ivory reference made me think of her neck, as in the psalm of Solomon. Especially considering she hanged herself.
The reviewer is not aware that Alicia has hung herself.
Point to consider while entertaining his thoughts.
She is hanging
You are correct. This is certainly my error!
