I am from the USA, and I would first like to say how much I enjoy this channel, The Oxford Society, and th very insightful, but very controled way you all discuss these matters with your guests.
Here in the US, debate has truly died. Instead it has degenerated into intransigence, with both sides of our political system resorting to name calling and other personal attacks, rather than trying to work together and resolve a particular issue. Its utterly childish.
I am 56, I worked in the intelligence side of federal law enforcement for 22 years, and since the second Bush administration, we basically have not had a truly functioning government and it's gotten worse not better. Almost as soon a Obama was elected, the two political parties threw away reason, and intellectual discussion on issues, and adopted a childish stance of disagreeing, and not working together simply over political affiliation. The Republicans would not cooperate with the Democrats and vice versa, no matter how critical the issue.
The same happened under the Trump administration and continues under the current Biden administration.
Through these last three administrations true democracy and real debate has virtually died. Neither side will work with the other. And based on my background I have often considered the idea that this situation has been engineered by foreign governments hostile to Western, and particularly, American democracy and ideologies.
Western democratic governments , by virtue of needing to stand for elections on a regular basis, tend to focus on short term, while the world's dictatorships like Russia, China and others do not have to worry about re-election, so they can focus on very long term plans. And I firmly believe the dictatorships have been, long term, doing their level best to disrupt western democratic nation's political systems and processes and also western alliances.
What keeps democracy, in any country, alive is debate and a willingness to compromise. No solution to a problem is ever perfect, but in the past, different political parties were willing to sit at the table, and focus on the needs of the population and forge a working functional government and working solutions.
To make matters worse, for myriad reasons, the people of the world's democracies have forgotten that at their very core, the world's dictatorships want to see democracy fail and will do whatever it takes to make that happen.
Putin's invasion of the free, independent, sovereign, and democratic nation of Ukraine, has been galvanizing for the democracies, it has woken them from their reveries, and made them realize if democracy as a thriving political system is going to survive, it's time to put aside childish and petty ideas and work together.
And for those apologists out there for countries like Iran , North Korea and others, the world is seriously concerned about a world superpower pushing the nuclear button, there is no possible way that Iran or North Korea should ever have any nuclear capabilities whatsoever. Just imagine what would happen if they do have nuclear capabilities.
Keep up the great videos on this channel, you give me hope that democracy can still work in the modern age.

Can you say Fox News? This so-called news organization is not owned by an American. It is owned by Rupert Murdock, an Australian. It does Russia's bidding. I should really say Putin's bidding.
You think I'm kidding? Russian media is running Tucker Carlson as supporting the Russian side in the Ukraine war as we listen to this discussion.
You may want to say MSNBC is just as bad. I disagree. MSNBC's opinion talkers are based on reality. Fox's are not.
No comment on CNN. But I read the same things as MSNBC on ABC, CBS and PBS/NPR. They all aren't biased. Any one of them would report the truth even if it isn't the Dem party line because they would get more ratings by having the scoop. Fox News is based on crazy conspiracy theories and other non-reality.
I'm not familiar with Britian's news organizations to know who is who. However, I believe Murdock owns some British tabloids as well.
Otherwise, your post is exactly right. The GOP and Dems won't work together on anything. I personally believe the GOP is much worse. I looked at the old British empire very differently now. I have come to realised we are not some benevolent force, but are in reality global oppressors, we steal, we create chaos, coups, instigate wars such as those in Ukraine. At first I believed the usual rhetoric "freedom and democracy", but sadly I now know better.
You gotta give credit where credit's due, we do excel at propaganda which is why many in UK thinks Russia is the agressor in the Ukraine conflict but little did people know, that it is US that has orchestrated, instigated this conflict nor that it is US, uk that has trained neo nazis which has now infiltrated Ukraining govt, remember we did train ISIS, Al Qaeda too, so this is not surprising at all. US will train any forces in order to elicit chaos to used to our benefit.
The don't call us Perfidious Albion for no reason. Sure many countries aren't perfect, but we are beyond imperfect, we are borderline psychopathic or at least those in power. Let that sink in for a moment.
I urge to look into Oliver Stone's Ukraine on Fire 2016 documentary and Revealing Ukraine 2019, which is a followup to the first, it truly is eye opening and will explain how we ended up here and guess what... US intervention is all over the place.

This isn't to say Putin and Russia have no agency, but the point is he hasn't just gone mad and this isn't merely a case of naked aggression on his part. You may not agree with what Putin is doing, but that's a separate matter as to what explains it... but you continue stroking yourself for being such a "good person" who gets enraged about things when the BBC/Channel 4/*insert other western propaganda outlet* talking head tells them to.

      Yemen (etc)?? The proxy
wars, deliberate outside interference with & destabilization of sovereign territories, the formation/training/ arming & funding of terrorist groups & replacement of elected leaders with western directed puppets. The stage managed & choreographed disingenuous moral outrage of the west, having deliberately turned a blind eye towards, & chosen NOT to report any of the above (almost numberless) atrocities committed by the West (principally the US & UK) is both laughable & obscene. My issue is that the responses are not challenged. For instance, Mr. Steel responds with some answers that we now know are factually challenged. Yet he is allowed to continue unchallenged. I don't wish to get into the controversies over that issue but might it not be the case that Hillary did a pretty good job of discrediting herself? That is how these types of events always go. You need to realize the slick nature of the latest series of Oxford Union talks involving former members of MI-6 which has been for public relations, or more accurately, forming and molding public perception.
Steele’s answers could not have been more effective at that, since the questions were basically vetted beforehand and the Service, given plenty of time to formulate the right, most efficacious response.
Join and spend some time with the clandestine services; you will see how the game is played!
By the way, the questioners usually are NOT in on the “dance routine.” They are the last to know that the particular question of theirs was, or rather, would be chosen, precisely because it is the type of question “any member of the public would ask,” exactly as you have observed!!!

Interesting discussion, but one thing totally missing was the role of Energy. Russia as the world's largest oil exporter and supplier of much of western Europe's gas. Even ignoring Russia, and for that matter Belarus, being major suppliers of all sorts of commodities essential for industry and agriculture, I'm afraid this rather major ignored factor is an enormous ace up Putin's sleeve. The west probably has 6 months before this situation becomes untenable for their economies and stagflation, recession and progression to depression becomes irreversible. If Ukraine can't beat off Russia in that time frame and leave Putin in a much weakened state, forcing him to negotiate, then any releases from the finite SPR stockpile will become increasingly ineffective! Once that reserve is gone, things start to get interesting.
