  • #Iran is home to a colourful array of ethnicities: Persians, Arabs, Azeris, Kurds, Baluchis, Lurs and a group that's less talked about: the Black #African community. While we have no verified figures, according to some reports, there are more than tens of thousands of Black Iranians living in a number of cities. To talk more about the Iranian-African community both in and out of the country, we speak to Priscillia Kounkou Hoveyda, one of the founders of the Collective for Black Iranians.

The western theory of race and colonialism does not fit into Iranian narratives very neatly, as it is written for its own context and not an Iranian one. However, as Iranians we need to acknowledge just how much racism we have internalized and how much we are hurting people within our own communities, and we need to listen when black Iranians (as well as other ethnicities like afghans or Arab Iranians) speak about the racism they experience and change things, as opposed to talking about how not racist Iranians are. That is very far from true.

Unfortunately I have noticed this too. Iranians generally seem to buy into the hierarchical mindset where white people are at the top, then Iranians a level under, then Indians, other Middle Easterners and black people beneath them. This is a racist mindset and is evident in how foreigners are treated based on their appearance and country of origin when visiting Iran.

European colonizers like the Portuguese brought Blacks to Iran as their slaves. Shah Abbass of Persia freed them after he defeated their European masters. The freed Blacks decided to live in Iran (just like the Jews freed by King Cyrus of Persia). Over centuries they have been welcomed and naturally integrated into the great Iranian nation, in contrast to the blacks in the West who still suffer from racism. Stop misinformation. Office Alireza, Blacks are the indigenous people of Mesopotamia/Sumer. Those immigration stories are minor events in the larger picture. This mitigated framing of the Elamites, etc. alongside bufoon imagery like haji firou is a driver of racism not only in Iran, but around the world. One should ask when imagery or Iran come up why there are never anyone with black skin. Then ask yourself if you truly believe no one sees them as different. Where are the black Iranian doctors, lawyers, judges, pilots, university professors, Theocratic leaders, president. Where are they? If no one things of them as different then they would be just as the norm as any other Iranian and there wouldn't be a need for "special reports" about them.

Eating and dinking too much of the same cuisine, gets insipid after a while. I am fair skinned, but I find the deep dark melinated skin tones far more attractive. That is just me, I suppose.
