- #Iran is home to a colourful array of ethnicities: Persians, Arabs, Azeris, Kurds, Baluchis, Lurs and a group that's less talked about: the Black #African community. While we have no verified figures, according to some reports, there are more than tens of thousands of Black Iranians living in a number of cities. To talk more about the Iranian-African community both in and out of the country, we speak to Priscillia Kounkou Hoveyda, one of the founders of the Collective for Black Iranians.

The western theory of race and colonialism does not fit into Iranian narratives very neatly, as it is written for its own context and not an Iranian one. However, as Iranians we need to acknowledge just how much racism we have internalized and how much we are hurting people within our own communities, and we need to listen when black Iranians (as well as other ethnicities like afghans or Arab Iranians) speak about the racism they experience and change things, as opposed to talking about how not racist Iranians are. That is very far from true.
Unfortunately I have noticed this too. Iranians generally seem to buy into the hierarchical mindset where white people are at the top, then Iranians a level under, then Indians, other Middle Easterners and black people beneath them. This is a racist mindset and is evident in how foreigners are treated based on their appearance and country of origin when visiting Iran.

@@thecrimsondragon9744 Iranians can't be white?
How iranians are racist again? Be spcific.
There is not such thing has afghan Iranians we afghans have many ethnicity if our own like the Turks (uzbek and Turkmen) or the Persian speaker (Tajiks hazara ) aimaq) pasthuns and many more
Why are darker skin toned people who have African DNA have been made to feel like something is wrong with them? Why have other cultures all over the planet who has darker skin tone picked on people of African origin? There are plenty of Arabs, Iranian, South American, Indian from India) & other places that have deep dark skin tone with different hair textures. So why act racist towards other people!!
Hahaha no one knows… it stems from true stupidity
Real Arabs do NOT have deep dark skin. Real Arabs never had black skin or brown skin. Real Arabs are Semitic Caucasians and they always had olive skin, tan skin, and white pale skin with many hair colors and eye colors. Please stop spreading lies about Arabs. Anyone with brown skin is South Asians (Indians and Pakistanis) living in Arab countries. And anyone with black skin is NOT Arab but Black Africans.
it comes from the myth of the curse of ham & the innate metaphysical hate that pale races have because they are both genetically & culturally recessive.
white supremacy is global black people all over the world face the same issue.
Look who are over represented in crime statistics. Stereotypes aren't just slapped on. They are earned.
Being black in Iran is not a big deal. In Abadan, and generally along the Persian Gulf coastline, there are quite a good population of blacks. And it is a matter of course. Nothing out of ordinary.
Iranian are the kindest people of l have ever seen in the middle east.
@@petitben5240 Oh thank you
It is sad that black Iranians are facing racism in Iranian because of the color of their skin. It needs to be talked about because it’s part of the Iranian Culture.
@@traciwalker8691 how and where you find out Iranian culture
@@galaxymyt4834 I have friends that are Iranian.
From what i've seen the Iranians treat black people with more respect and honour than the west. During the hostage crisis in 1979 when americans were held hostage, the Ayatollah at the time demanded that the black people and the women among the hostages should be let free, because they knew blacks were oppressed ground in america. Iran is a very enlighten country more so than all the arab countries i would say
@Zakaria Ali that's not black face, its a legend of a zoroastrian migrant who keeps the wood burning for the fire the black is soot

We have different races in Iran and we have been living together peacefully for thousands of years.....
We are not in the west
Exactly, well grant it Afro-Iranians were enslaved until modern era (1900s) but original Iranian culture IS based on love, respect, tolerance and acceptance. This is why Reza Shah was so important to officially put an end to it.
Thank you for saying that !!!
I hope this is true.
@@rederatv Yes, it is true. Very true. Not like the West.

Tbh nobody sees whites or black in iran😂 thats an american thing. Its jus not seen . I live in khuzestan and we never thought of each other as black or white
Absolutely
This needs to be talked in America as well because a lot of Iranians don’t talk about Afro-Iranians in which is sad 😢 There is a lot of Iranian Schools in America that educate there children on Afro-Iranians in I think is racist and very sad 😢
Im Iranian/American and I’d agree to that.. they don’t bring it up and maybe they just want to assimilate into whiteness. On the other end, black folks will always embrace everyone.
European colonizers like the Portuguese brought Blacks to Iran as their slaves. Shah Abbass of Persia freed them after he defeated their European masters. The freed Blacks decided to live in Iran (just like the Jews freed by King Cyrus of Persia). Over centuries they have been welcomed and naturally integrated into the great Iranian nation, in contrast to the blacks in the West who still suffer from racism. Stop misinformation. Leave Iranians alone.
Also Omani merchants during the 19th century when they were renting ports from the Qajar kings
The Arabs sold black slaves to Iran and every other middle eastern country and India & Pakistan in the 7th century
@@marmary5555 Qajar they are turk
Office Alireza, Blacks are the indigenous people of Mesopotamia/Sumer. Those immigration stories are minor events in the larger picture. This mitigated framing of the Elamites, etc. alongside bufoon imagery like haji firou is a driver of racism not only in Iran, but around the world. The real depictions like the Darius the Great Sphinxes and the Immortals should be promulgated to tell the full history of the region.
...They are the original people of the area..stop equalizing darker tones with slavery..
In Iran if you commit a crime there are major repercussions. In America the jails are so crowded you can get caught robbing a store at gunpoint and be released from the jail the same day. Not fair to compare the two.
Not true in America, you don’t walk away. It’s possible to attempt any crime but if your caught your punished. Death penalty is not popular here due to our history.
First time to hear this, all Iranians I have meet here in Australia or other countries were all friendly to me and very kind people.
It's a lie. I say this as, an iranian
If you are white, then you won't see it. Also, Iranians born and raised in western countries will generally be much more open minded and progressive.
You hear what you got to hear in their media. This woman is half iranian and still ignorant enough to call a mythical iranian character(haji firouz)a "black face" !..doesn't get worse than that. Seems like growing up in a racist society messes up with people's minds.

Race and ethnicity in iran is totally a different notion than that of the west. Completely different. Nobody even thinks of them(like iranians in south who have african ancestry) as different. But she is half iranian. Not the same as black iranians. Why are you mixing everything up? Just because they may look simmilar doesn't make them the same. One is half iranian one is fully iranian! Why do you think the whole world must think the same way as you??She isn't even well educated enough to know about haji firooz who is Not a black face. Western media is disgusting.
The purpose was to bring visibility to this segment of the Iranian population. You sound quite bitter that this population was even brought up to begin with. One should ask when imagery or Iran come up why there are never anyone with black skin. Then ask yourself if you truly believe no one sees them as different. Where are the black Iranian doctors, lawyers, judges, pilots, university professors, Theocratic leaders, president. Where are they? If no one things of them as different then they would be just as the norm as any other Iranian and there wouldn't be a need for "special reports" about them.
The women who spoke in this video said they felt discriminated in some way.
You can’t speak on other peoples experience lol

Haji firooz is a very old figure coming from ancient times his black face is as by coming back by the land of the dead black is a color and africans cant keep the color hostage just because thry are black the color black is a part of every culture some people are exacerating everything
Now they are insulting are mythical figures with mixing them up with their own racist mindset and history!😡poor racist folks think the whole world is as messed up as they are.
Priscillia Kounkou Hoveyda
Prisicillia is not an Iranian name.
Hoveyda is a popular Iranian last name.
Not sure about Kounkou and its roots.
She is a human rights lawyer. Human rights lawyer is not a popular choice as a major to study for Iranians.
She speaks fluent English.
She seems balanced and her responses are appropriate.
I hope that she appreciates being an Iranian.
I feel that Iranian culture is the most powerful culture in the world.
You missed the part where she said that her father was Congolese so kounkou must be Congolese.
Question is, how safe is it for an African or black person to travel to Iran? Or be in a relationship or association with ethnic Persians, how’d it fare for him or her or them?
safe and effective 😂
there are many African Iranians living in the south of Iran mostly ... many Arabs too ... but the number of Iranians there is also rather high ... like a lot high! ;-)
You can see the black Persians(Elam) at the ruins of ancient Persepolis with their cotton ball hair and beard and the conquered allies cauc-asians with their straight hair.

Nothing is static. Soon the paradigm will shift, where darker tones of skin colour will be favoured over the fair tones. It's just how the human psyche works. Eating and dinking too much of the same cuisine, gets insipid after a while. I am fair skinned, but I find the deep dark melinated skin tones far more attractive. That is just me, I suppose. Opposite attracts. Being bias toward anyone based on skin colour is a psychological mind construct.

Iran (Elam) began as a Black nation. The current masses of Iranians are ancient Blacks mixed with Aryans.
Hey man we are not recist we just care about behavior of people's not their Color
Iran is a new nation which the last Shah formed, the very foundation of Iran was created by Persians who were not black. As Persians and other ethnic groups were about of those former nations and were in the formerly modern “Persia” the Shah changed the name to Iran to unite everyone and not only the Persians. Stop lying and stealing history which does not belong to you.
Also it was the Anshan not the Elam who became Persia, the Elam who actually had fled due to Indo-Iranian speaking populations lol
@@PussNBootos , the extant records put the area under the Elam rubric. Anshan has been shown to be an influential city in the south highlands, but Elam (Gen. 10:22) holds sway to encompassing both the Susiana lowlands of the north and the southern lowlands where Anshan emerged. Gradually over the millennia, the indigenous peoples of Mesopotamia/Sumer intermixed with Aryans from the east fostering Persian.
