Every time I see a facility that has "experts" caring for these guys (newborn great apes) and they do not have caregivers holding him or allowing him body contact 24/7 (all the time) it just makes me feel awful !! Recent research has shown that there are so many reasons why they should not be left alone in a cage or incubator or bed for any length of time and no positive reasons to do so!! In order for them to develop properly physically, emotionally, psychologically and socially they should be cared for as close to the way the mother would as possible! To an infant primate, to be left alone and not constantly clinging to mom, instinct tells them that means certain death. Mom never puts a newborn primate down and leaves it!!

The incubator is important but there is still something that could replicate the mother's feel that the baby could lie against,and the nannies could wear little shirts and vests that are made to replicate the feel of a mommy's fur. Also, I get so sick of watching them feed the babies their bottles when the bottles are half full of air because they're not tilted up sufficiently to the baby's mouth level. Also they should hold the babies close to their breasts when they're feeding them, rather than have them sitting up. But it's usually the same zoos, or whatever facilities these are, where this occurs in Asia.
