Funny story about Jonathan Wilburn singing this. Gaither came up to him in the dressing room and asked if he knew this song. He said yes. Bill said you’re sing this on the taping. Like you don’t say no to Bill. Truth is he didn’t know it. He got a CD of the song and learned it in an hour or so. But you can see he forgot the words at one point but faked his way through it.
Glen Payne had PERFECT pitch. I've never heard him miss a note.

David Phelps has some extraordinary pipes to hold that high note that long. I remember Johnny Cook doing it as well. Johnny had fabulous breath control, high or low. Both gifted vocalists.....

Huh ? But it's the Gaither Vocal Band that sings this song. And it's David who makes that note high like no one else. Ernie does head voice every time he sang.

LORD GUIDE their understanding of words to use to come into YOUR PRESENCE with an honest reverence of WHO YOU ARE to experience the beauty that time can't erase YOUR WISDOM resting on their faces. LORD STRENGTHEN their determination to never waiver in efforts to search for YOU because the wages of sin is too high for anyone to pay. If one believes faith cannot be forced, YOU WILL GIVE that individual over to the stubborn heart to follow own counsel which will surely fail him or her to the extent that the punishment will last forever found in Psalms 81 NIV. Given this, I pray that YOU WILL MAKE that person see that this feeling is wasted for a world in which we become strangers as we age, gives us thrills instead of peace, aims to solve a problem but creates another, and unrest surges with each passing generation. Shed some light into their broken hearts for YOU ARE THE GREAT JEHOVAH, THE GOD THAT HEALETH thee.
Lastly, LORD when they call on YOU in earnest prayer to come into their hearts to be born again, I pray that YOU WILL GIVE them the blessed assurance of their salvation because nothing breaks YOUR HEART, or tears YOU apart like when they cry from the trials of the devil who comes to slander, falsely accuse, steal, kill & destroy. Only by drawing nearer to YOU LORD will put them on a path to a glorious one way trip winding upward to YOU where pain is not welcome because the heart will never break anymore. For ONLY YOU UNDERSTANDS our tears since YOU LOOK at the heart, while humans look at the flesh.
O LOVE that will not let them go. When they don't have the strength to try, and have cried all they can cry hear their hearts that need YOU more today than yesterday. Many thanks LORD for speaking TRUTH in our lives TO BLESS those who are not offended by THEE. LET YOUR WILL BE DONE because YOUR LOVE ALONE CONQUERS everything by WAITING for them to cease struggling, and finally surrender to YOUR EMBRACE to learn about YOUR LOVE AND PROMISE TO TAKE CARE of your children exquisitely. 🥰 Since... Jon DeMol actually, the "aaah" sound is more difficult to hold because it requires more air. But I guess it also depends on the singer and preference as well.

I think people need to be more realistic than idealistic about David Phelps. 1. David is not the only one hitting the high note. Look very closely and you will see Erine Haase is hitting the high note as well. 2. For a fact Ernie Haase is a much better tenor singer then David. 3. David's face every time he holds it looks tired and almost showing it's alot. While Erin's now and other videos is calm and peaceful. 4. David seems like he must always be the one to get the best part and if he must share it he still has to be better. Also he is way too serious and too much of a show person. Other tenors don't act the way he does. They let others join in or even take take the best part that they themselves would like to have. So please give credit where it's due!
I think you’re dreaming if you think Ernie Haase is better than David Phelps. At best, Ernie was the third best tenor for the Cathedral Quartet. Phelps can sing circles around Ernie. He is classically trained, and his range is better. In fact, the Gaither Vocal Band isn’t what it is today without David Phelps joining the group in 1997. He took them to the next level, whereas before, they were just a nice group. He turned them into headliners. Ernie got his longevity because he married George’s daughter.
@@michaelholman517minKC think again and next time do your research will you! Ernie haase was singing tenor and doing concerts before he joined the Cathedrals which was a dream come true. Not only that but he didn't even realize that he was being considered by George Younce when the latter singer was listening to one of his concerts. Only After Ernie joined the group did he meet Lisa Younce and married her. So if please I don't mind people having different opinions but for goodnesses sake's... Research and Get Your Facts Right, will you!!!
And you knows maybe Bill wanted Ernie to hit the high note just by himself and it was David Phelps with his standing in the Gaither Vocal Band that they had him do the high note as well? Something to consider if you're truly being honest!!!!!
@@glorygriffith4386 I know that Ernie Haase was singing professionally before he joined The Cathedrals. He sang with Squire Parsons. And I am well aware of the fact that he married Lisa after he joined The Cathedrals, and therefore became George’s son-in-law. And I never said that Ernie wasn’t talented. What I am saying is that Ernie got himself some job security by marrying Lisa because he is at best the fourth best tenor to sing for The Cathedral Quartet. Danny Funderburk, Roy Tremble, and Kirk Talley were all better tenor singers. Also, when signature sound and the Gaither Vocal Band were doing combined projects, you could make the argument that the two owners of the groups were the two weakest singers, Ernie Haase and Bill Gaither. All that being said, I don’t hate Ernie, nor do I have it in for him. I think he’s a good singer, but I don’t think he’s nearly as good as people make him out to be. And on the flipside, I believe David Phelps is a generational talent. He is such a powerhouse, so much so the Bill Gaither took songs immediately out of their repertoire upon his resignation. I have been following The Cathedrals since 1983, and the Gaither Vocal Band since the early 1990s. I know my facts…
@@michaelholman517minKC well 1st of all I owe you a public appolige and you do know your facts very well! It was very wrong of me to be so bold like that 2nd, I just want people not to overdo on David Phelps to the point that they are ignoring other gteat tenors like Ernie Haase, Michael Booth, Wes Hampton, Jimmy Fortune and others. Yes Phelps is really good but so are the others as well. 3rd maybe Ernie got job security with marring Lisa but one could say something in a very weak similar about David Phelps in the GVB. Remember when he left the group Wes Hampton took the tenor and for a while it was Gaither-Hall-Peron and Hampton? Well Hall and Penrod left the group and were replaced by Lowry and English. Hampton didn't leave but was placed 2nd tenor because Phelps wanted to join the GVB again. All of this maybe just maybe because of his voice. Doesn't it seem just alittle odd that Gaither did that when he already had a high tenor? Would Gaither have done that by telling the 1st tenor (if the tenor didn't want to leave) he already had that he was not only going to add another tenor but this the one coming in will take over completely? Bill Gaither never did that with anyone until David wanted to come back and Wes was still in the group. While Phelps English and Lowry dominated during that time Hampton didn't have much. O yes he got to sing but it wasn't in his high tenor voice and when he did get to do some he had to take turns with Phelps. Not only that he didn't get much on the second tenor either because English dominated that as well. Again because people like English's voice. It happens so much. And when Hampton does get a solo like "He Is Here" guess who backs him up?!? Phelps and English not who are just as talented as they are (that is of they're doing a group homecoming). So just be a little realistic when it comes to David Phelps is all I'm really asking and that was my intention to begin with.

Wrong. Unless you watched the blindfolded video, it's clearly noticeable that only David is playing this note. Jay manages to do it, but he wasn't, he was singing the other lines of the song, but whether he did it or not, David's voice is brighter in the high area while Jay's sounds more like a falsetto. And Ernie was clearly not doing the same as David, he was doing it in his head voice, notice how his mouth is shaped.
David deserves the credit.
