A brilliant performance of Schumann’s only opera, an opera rarely performed, so it was a great pleasure to hear yesterday’s performance by the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra and Choir
Marvelous performance!
What a wonder-and great performances by all. The extraordinary Third Act shows this to be the most musically advanced (and experimental) opera of the time. Bravo Schumann, thanks Helsinki Baroque. "Linda Siegel writes of the opera that 'Schumann's preoccupation with the interplay between his characters, incidentally, led him to adopt a system of musical imagery amazingly advanced for the time: the highly complex web of musical symbols in Genoveva cannot be found in Wagner until Tristan."
Pity no English translation.
Time to learn German.
