This was like watching someone teaching someone how to land an airplane without looking at the controls. Pretty amazing.
Alex and Jack in a video together talking about the Moog holy trinity. Holy crap. This day cannot get any better.
Alex is an excellent educator. He really has a talent for explaining things clearly and simply!
Nice Goom T-shirt

The first thing I noticed was the Juno-60. I thought he had some kind of Russian Juno knockoff.
Damn, you stole my comment, well play. It should be the new name of Behringer haha.

This has got to be one of my favorite videos ever. He's straight up like a kid learning these synths 😂
Jacks little face at the end. Like a kid in a synth shop! His enthusiasm is infectious that's for sure :-)
This is the best way to do a tutorial!!! Thanks guys 🙏
Name a more iconic duo than Alex and Jack
Luke (Korg) and Jack & Remy (Roland) and Jack. ;)
Jack and Luke from Korg
Zippy and George
Can't win Wayne and Garth, don't try. Partytime, excellent.
Gaz and Nick Batt.
Just got a Subharmonicon today. This video is awesome. Thank you !!!!!!!
That's weird how Goom synths have their patch bay on the left side
Is it pronounced like "gume" or "gome"?
@@BinuralOdyssey *high five*
Mylar Melodies tagline could be: "Introducing people to empty bank accounts since X" as Jack looked a little too excited there to not being buying a few HP of gear… Moog are very lucky to have him.
Please ask the Capt for a better quality overhead cam :)
Woof. Overhead view shot on a potato lol
I am jacks empty wallet.
I like this video because it's far more reflective of what normal humans can create with this gear
Excellent video! Worth it for Jack’s reaction at 44:29 alone ✌️
Fantastic tutorial video for all this gear, delivered in the fun way that only Jack and Alex can! Excellent guys! Jack's enthusiasm is so contagious... :D
44:27 I love that unbridled joy
gave me the biggest smile!
That kick when turn the triangle wave on @25.39 is the kick drum of dreams 😝
Terry Riley would love Subharmonicon
best subharmonicon track I have heard so far on youtube, getting this beast soon!
This is honestly one of the best videos on YT... 🤯
AMAZING tutorial and incredibly congenial atmosphere. 🤩
That was a really fun one to watch! Cheers you guys!
This guy is pure joy!
Thanks so much for the great video. It’s perfect for learning the Moogs but I wish I had seen it when I first started because it applies to all synths and the way you guys presented the explanation and then implementation would have saved me years of trying to figure the EG knob out. I really dug the piece that you created. That’s the beauty of these machines. To me they are like a cross between a chemistry set and your favorite pet. Thanks for the pro tip about the 4 tier rack. I had an extra 2 tier after I bought my 3 tier for the trio like you guys presented. I’m going to get an extra empty Moog skiff and put some modular gear up there. Thanks to both of you again for all the education.
Thanks for the explanation of VCA vs VCF! @14:45
Gregorian Techno was a thing in the 90s. It was popular in spas and places of that sort. I had a really New Agey gym teacher who made us do aerobics to tacky electronic remixes of like Gregorian chants, inappropriately used indigenous music from different parts of the world, whale song, rainforest sounds, etc....
Damn it!! 😘
Was that basically Enigma's deal?
best Music channel hands down. No Cap
I’ve been digging this synth a lot in my jams
this is so priceless. thank *YOU* both and moog.
Damn... I had managed to forget how much I wanted these Moog boxes 🤣👌🏻
Absolutely wonderful video "tutorial"! This was super helpful (i was actually able to create something listenable thanks to following along) I love this sort of coaching session and it worked really well. Both of you were great to listen to and you covered a ton of info. Thank you so much!
Extremely useful. Thank you, guys
amazing tutorial! VCF vs VCA chat was bliss! Thank you
Excellent vid guys thanks
best tuto ever, thank you so much :)
really cool video.... helped me a lot to understand my subh and dfam much better... thx!
Alex's knowledge is unparalleled and Jack is a downright goofball that is irreplaceable. I love you guys except for the fact that you sneakily have me part with my monies everytime you create videos like this! Cheers from sunny Florida!
The enthusiasm is charming. I’m waiting on the sub to stick with the dfam and mother
I’m all for Gregorian Techno
Well done for doing this in lockdown.
That was awesome. Thanks both
Such a great video. Thank you both!
These two are great together. Calm and considered vs hyperactive excitement. The Matriarch video made my decision to finally buy it
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Oh, good golly. Now I’m a fan! Had my doubts about the SubHarmonicon, and really big doubts about the DFAM. You guys are funny and brilliant, and I’m sold. I’ll be driving down to Asheville to the Moog factory to buy the studio package deal with the DFAM and the SubH. I already hav a glorious Mother32. Need to round out the combo. Thanks for the walk-through on connecting them! Cheers and Thanks, lads!
That was sounding pretty good at the end there.
I love goom products!
Great stuff guys! 👍
You look fabulous, Jack.
It's been some days now and I'm still waiting for Gregorian techno...
I immediately thought of Moa Pillar (album: Humanity). And then of James Holden (album: the Inheritors).
Don’t forget about Enigma
i didnt understand EG and VCF but now thanks to mylar its making more sense. still a tricky concept for me but now i have an idea. cool video love the subh! just got mine and hooking it via midi to a sequencer solves most problems ppl seem to have had with it imo.
This was very intuitive
This was very enjoyable.
Swooning over these knowledgable (and handsome) gentlemen.
So cool! Love Jack's videos, always worth a watch.
Thanks for tuning in, it was great fun to learn & get creative with the Moog Subharmonicon in this video!
Gregorian techno exists in the form of the group Enigma from the 1990s. Check out “Sadness Part 2” for their most famous track.
you guys are awesome...
GREGORIAN TECHNO!! 😀🎹🎶
I love everything everything everything everything
13:30 great question 👍🏼 (I wanted to know this)
great video and explanations. 👏🏼
more videos like this pls! I'm getting into semi-modular and desperate for training
Really Fun and good Machines
great !
Best ever! Make music, have fun! Thanks.
YES PALS, LOVE MR MELODIES
I bought 2x DFAM based on Alex's demo video with Andertons a while back.
Hahaha!!! Me too!!! He was crazy! Loved that presentation! He really loves the dfam and the gear and that is when things get shown the beat way!! I just want him to do a live session with the 3: dfam mother 32 and subharmonicom and why not use several units like 2 mothers and 3 dfam and 2 subharmonicom! Would be pretty amazing and then just have things explained.
@@tarekmansur Thanks Tarek!! I'm a whole year late responding to this, but this is basically what you were mentioning - in case you didn't already see it: czcams.com/video/7JuhsoJq01Q/video.html
would like to have one these Moog guys just at home, that would be wonderful
Jack....I think I love you !!!
This is a great video. I've been using it as a tutorial and playing along with my gear, but I noticed that when I use the Assignable output of the M32, it didn't work. I used the Gate output instead and it did. After I RTFM for the M32, it seems the default Assignable output setting "outputs a 0 to +5v filtered pulse signals from Accented pattern steps only". I had to go into setup mode and change the assignable output to Clock and then everything worked as in the video. Thanks and please do more of the SUBH/DFAM/M32 videos!
Maybe the assignable output wasn’t assigned for gate or clock, you can change it with button combos I believe
That man is an imposter. He obviously works for Moog's mortal enemy, pooM.
I learned more about synthesis in the last 50 minutes than I have in collective months of watching loopop, Ricky Tinez, Red Means Record, Andy Huang and sonicstate. I still love them, of course, but this was hugely informative and fun.
How does one go about patching to get say one of the sequencers to ratchet or do staggered notes in lieu of straight shot sequencing? Thanks
Everyone should watch cenk and his elektron posts ... different world !
The two of you need to do a jam sometime
I like his goom top
Can you copy multiple EFE files to 1 disk with EPSlin?
What is Alex’s channel called?
I was not gonna watch this video until I noticed sir Alex in the thumbnail.
I was wondering how you have the audio outputs running on this 3 tier setup. As I am aware each device has only 1 out for audio. And which or what is going into reverb pedal?
DFAM and Mother are in mono running into Radial Pro DI boxes then a UA Apollo X8. The Subharmonicon comes out mono in the the Empress reverb then that goes in stereo through the DI boxes in to the interface. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching mate
@@jackduxbury1632 I'm not familiar with the Radial Pro's, those are just to filter out excessive noise? And I would assume you have 2 ProDI's (1 for DFAM & 1 for Mother) then 1 ProD2 for the Stereo aspect. Hope I got that correct.
Spot on with the gear guess. We go through the DI's just out of habit and it allows us to lift a ground if there's hum (as you said) aswell as have a consistency of connection (Balanced Line Level In) X
@@jackduxbury1632 TY for getting back to me. Modular is new to me. I have a Mother-32 now & plan to put together a 3-tier setup, Mother,DFAM & Subharmonicon. There aren't many full setup video's or info for Audio connection's but there sure is alot on patching..LOL go figure.
@@jackduxbury1632 Your Video w/ Mylar Melodies was by far the best on the Moog Semi-Modular Ecosystem.
@13:50 THANK YOU for the question, and of course the answer. I really was wondering while playing with my unit how really it worked. I'm still a bit confused sometimes as the results I get are not always what I was expecting, but this explanation helped me a lot.
Though there's a thing I still don't properly get. My understanding is that attack and decay of the VCF are tweaking the filter (the Cutoff) as if I was tweaking it myself. What I don't get is: from what position does it "turn" the knob, and at what speed ? If my cutoff sits mid from example, and I dial a short decay on the VCF, what does it "make the Cutoff" do if we were to imagine its physical movement? Would it start from the bottom left position and rise (if the EG is set to a positive position), or start from its current position (middle) and rise ?
Thank you very much in advance for this info, and all the ones that are contained in this great vid!
I can explain, if you still wonder
@@MrScarabey hi, yes if you have the answer that'd be neat!
@@TristanBaldi So as we know, the ADSR is a function curve, generally applied to amplitude of sound, aka loudness. If there’s a second ADSR, usually it controls the filter, that’s right. So what it’s doing is copying the behavior of amplitude ADSR, but applying it to filter cutoff knob. It’s easier to explain on DFAM or Mother since they have AR and ASR.
For example, you have 0 attack, so the sound starts right away, and then goes slow long decay / release. And on filter we have 0 attack, and fast release. Therefore we will hear long decaying sound with fast filter sweep down (if positive amount EG engaged). Filters sweep is never longer than the main duration of the sound. Filter EG can close filter longer than amp EG would close overall sound with set settings, but it wil still retrigger on the next note.
And finally, any filter action normally leads us to the point of positioning of your filter knob. If we take DFAM as a simplest of EG principles, it goes like this. For example, our note is one second note and our filter EG set like this: maximum positive portion on VCF EG amount and some clockwise portion on vcf decay. We will hear one second decaying sound with fraction of a second of a filter sweep going down. So the filter sweep will start from max open filter position and end on your cutoff frequency position. If you open your filter cutoff (turn it fully clockwise), you will hear no filter sweep as it’s nowhere to go for filter EG. If you set Filter decay knob further clockwise, and amp decay short, filter move will not make it in time to the Filter cutoff position point.
Phew, that’s all I know about filter sweeps)
@@MrScarabey Thanks a lot for your answer. I am aware of enveloppes and filter enveloppes on a simple ADSR synth, but was confused specifically on the Subharmonicon. The second part of your answer helps in that matter, thanks very much
at 15.37 is that just a slip when he says 'de' or like... what's going on here...
What headphones is Alex wearing in this video?
Ahoy! Sennheiser HD25's
I 👏 would 👏 listen 👏 to 👏 Gregorian 👏 Techno
Where can I get a four tier rack like that Alex?
It's actually just the 3-tier rack but the synths are mounted into it upside down! This allows an "extra spot" on the bottom
You can just google “moog 4-tier rack kit” and a bunch of online retailers sell them now.
7:25 Gregorian dance track been done before.

Ahhh. That’s why tech support guys get annoyed.
Seriously though, fantastic tutorial. Thanks!
Subharmonicon is enticingly enigmatic, DFAM is a £500 analogue kick, Change my mind.
I was super skeptical of the DFAM when it was first released. It seemed like a half-baked drum machine with a limited 8-step sequencer and no midi. I’m happy to admit that I was very wrong with that initial impression.
After watching more vids (including by Mylar Melodies) I became intrigued by how enthusiastic everyone seemed. Anyway, I bought one last month. I can honestly say it’s the most fun I’ve had with a piece of gear in a long time.
I don’t expect that I’ll write many complete tracks with it, but I walk away from an hour of noodling with a big smile on my face and feeling super positive about music making generally. It’s heaps of fun and really immediate and inspiring. I recommend playing one for a few minutes in a store if possible and you may be surprised by how much you like it.
What Medard said! It's a £500 kick here, but it's a lot more than a kick if you get into working it hard...!
DFAM is a 500 quid techno machine.. Moog should have called the Jeff Mills, you can lose hours with it,such and engaging and joyous machine. Also as true as that statement is for me the Subharmonicon is unbelievable, I try adore it.
The DFAM is a techno monster. So much more than just a kick to the point that a second one is more appealing to me than adding a M32 or Subharmonicon.
How and why this bearded baseball cap guy got hired by this store/channel is beyond me.
To bad there is no way of removing steps in the sequencer in the Subharmonicon just like The Mother 32.
forgot to press 'auto focus on' the synth shot. shame
QOOM
Alex. I spent this whole video wondering why you are wearing a “goom’ shirt.
