A lot of people seems to get the Mary deduction dinner moment wrong and I do not understand why. "You asked for it!" yes, she did ask for it, but Sherlock did it in a way to make it purposefully uncomfortable. Also, the very original Sherlock Holmes (from the books) belongs to the old times not the modern.

Not saying modern Sherlock Holmes media can't be down, but there's a bigger level of imagination and thought that goes into having it set in the past. None of the convivences of modern tech to help, nothing say that's all a modern Sherlock would use, but it certainly simplifies things more. Being set in a time where electricity wasn't really a thing, cellphones didn't exist. fingerprint and DNA tech wasn't a thing, cars weren't the thing etc. Shows the strength of the writer to have to craft a very compelling and complex mystery that Holmes solves on brains/knowledge of the globe he lives in alone.

Ma'am, you are aware BBC's Sherlock was not the creation of the character, right? He's a icon fictional British novel character from the old series. The setting is pretty much one to one.

Personally, I do believe Benedict’s Sherlock is my favorite however I love RDJ’s version as well, particularly the second movie in the series. Both versions have their own place in my heart.

Its sad that people tend to compare sherlock holmes adaptations. Im a HUGE fan of the books and have liked most adaptations and i think thats the beauty of it. They all bring something new to the story. My all time fav adaptations are the granada holmes series, The private life of Sherlock Holmes and the BBC Sherlock (Mostly the earlier seasons), but i think these movies are good aswell!

Most people watched the 2009 movie before they watched the 2010 TV series.
That makes a difference, of course.
Also: TODAY, many will tell you, how they love RDJr's Holmes...but in 2009, the reception of his "action heavy" Sherlock was not quite as 100% positive.
Same goes for Cumberbatch's *modern* take on the classic detective.
I saw the movie before the series...and I liked both versions...but then again: I also watched and enjoyed all the Basil Rathbone movies (1939 to 1946) before that, I watched and liked "Young Sherlock Holmes (and the pyramid of fear)", I watched Elementary (though I stopped watching that series at some point), I saw "Mr. Holmes" with Ian McKellen, and of course I watched "The Great Mouse Detective". Plus some other versions over the years, that I have probably forgotten about.
I assume, "Sherlock" with Benedict Cumberbatch was "your first"?
And i think I do remember, that - initially - you didn't like him?
But now you do like him _(maybe you even have a light crush on him?),_ and of course, the stark contrast of RDJr in comparison turns you off.
    That's normal.
You don't like RDJr's version? That's totally fine.
People here need to remember: *not everything is made for everyone.*

His angular features seemed to fit the character. Those were based more on the original Sherlock stories, and there aren't all the modern special effects.

my favourite sherlock holmes who i've seen is probably jeremy brett, who played him in the 1980s, that series is a lot more calm in its tone like it's not action-movie-ish like this film and even bbc sherlock (which i both love, too), so you do have to get used to the pace after the modern stuff, but i do think brett plays sherlock very well and really Gets the character and cares about him, it's very book-accurate too, if you'd like to see what the original stories were like. i'd love it if you reacted to it after the next movie if you wanna check it out. there's a playlist on youtube with all the episodes, just search "granada sherlock holmes" or "jeremy brett sherlock holmes" or something like that and it should come up :)

Wow, what? A female character sidelined in a male-aimed piece of media where the title is literally the character's name, but still play an important role in motivation are making up for the male character's short-comings? What a shock... It's almost like the same thing happens in female-aimed media, but without the same respect of making the male characters a form of motivation or making up for the female characters' short-comings because women write from a place of self-insert insecurity rather than you know... COMPELLING and SMART. They go for emotion and wish fulfillment at the expense of logic.

NAH, this Holmes is superior lol. Not $hitting on Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock, he's a great actor, but if I'm being honest it's like CW Sherlock for women... Best way I can put it lol. MODERNIZED. Not only is these films set in the correct time of the Sherlock novels, but I like RDJ's interpretation of Holmes kind of being a partly deranged, anti-social/awkward half man-child genius that's a savant in many things, but a big ego because of it.

It's a much faster film, the conflict isn't as dragged on (especially since there's not as much 'occult' gibberish,) the action is fun with great set pieces, and the Watson and Holmes banter makes it much more enjoyable since they're together more in the second film. Also these are like 90 minute films, there's only so much they can so and only so many characters get a scene/line. You're comparing a show to a film. A show gets to explore more of the characters continuous because it's like a new novel every new episode in the universe. Makes sense. These are 90 minute Hollywood blockbusters meant to entertain in that time frame. So they focus only the important of important with namesake being the most important. So they're gonna take up most the screen time.

Cumberbatch was amazing, but an actor is only as good as the material given, and Shelocks end for me didn't match the start. RDJ is an amazing actor and no real issues with either of his films, just not enough of them I suppose. And Johnny Lee Miller of Elementary is maybe my favorite of the bunch, just because you got to spend more time with said version and got to see a larger character arc. The Sherlock series took the original stories and twisted them in ways that made the familiar and fresh for those of who knew them. They did a great job overall.
The RDJ movies are took the characters we knew and put them into something new. These do fit the books a little more closely than the TV series.
The series from the 1980's with Jeremy Brett is the most faithful to the books overall. They were really good, but they are very not what you're used to here. You'll probably dislike hos slow they are, and they are set in Victorian times. If you want to experience the actual stories, but don't want to read them. The Brett Series is a reasonable choice.
You'll 100% HATE the TV show Elementary. It's set in the modern world, but in a funhouse mirror way. The characters are all distorted. For example... Holmes has tattoos and Watson is his addiction councilor. It was good for a while, and a really interesting take on the characters, but there is nothing about what you loved from The BBc Sherlock series.
The movies from the 1940's with Basil Rathbone twists the relationship to the point that Watson is little more than at stumbling buffoon. You'll probably hate them too.

If you’re seeing people smoke backwoods (if it’s the same as what a backwoods is in the US), they’re most likely smoking a weed/spliff. If they’re actually just smoking the tobacco, that’s the trashiest thing I’ve ever heard of

I actually like the movies much more than the show. In fact i think the show is terrible and benedict cumberbatch does not play a very good sherlock and it is very badly written. I dont wanna spoil anything but Moriarty is just so much better in the movies. In the show i think he is frankly ridiculous and just a joke of a character and in the movies he is actually really threatening. But thats just my opinion.

Then there was no reason to react to this, since you Knew he wasn't in it. I can only surmise you only watch things for views...strange reason to "choose" to watch something. 😂😂

    I DO SO AGREE…
I DO like the actors in this movie (when they’re playing other roles)…
But for me, Benedict is the ULTIMATE Sherlock Holmes (Then, in Second Place or possibly even tied for First Place with Benedict, is Jeremy Brett from the “Granada” Sherlock Holmes TV series - I think they were filmed in the 1980s?)
…I also agree that the Young Sherlock Holmes movie is great!
…The other two “Sherlock Holmes renditions” that I appreciate because they address other aspects of Sherlock’s character, are:
    A movie titled
“The Seven Percent Solution” (I think it was filmed in the 1970s?)
    …which addresses Sherlock’s often-overlooked relationship with drugs…
And then lastly, the movie - just titled Mr. Holmes - about an elderly Sherlock Holmes nearing the end of his career, played by Sir Ian McKellen.
    Oh AND…
Re. those Sherlock Holmes-related Netflix movies/series:
    Enola Holmes
    and…
    The Irregulars
…With Enola Holmes, I can actually “live with” Henry Cavill playing Sherlock (I just WISH it were Benedict!😄)
    …But, The Irregulars!!
It’s really TOO BAD, because the show has a neat premise based on Sherlock’s Homeless Network …
but that’s the ONLY “good” thing about a disaster of a show that made Dr. Watson into a Person Of Color.😖
