  • On November 25, 2018 Sunday my journey began for the next 6 days to see what is the conditions of the homeless. What was the options and process being done to help people get back on their feet. This video was created to ONLY raise awareness of people that donate to charities, encouraging them to look into the place they donate to. Also to ensure that they deeds will be put to good use and that the homeless are still human beings with emotions and toughs.

a homeless guy in Toledo who came into a bar/restaurant and was going to get thrown out because he was only having ice water. i got pretty pissed, gave the guy $20 and told him to stay. he ate, had coffee and ice tea. im on a fixed, limited income, but im not gonna stand to see my fellow man get fucked over like that.

I've heard way too many complaints about bed bugs at shelters when all they need to do is store belongings in a locked room and spray the stuff people bring in as well as the whole building a couple of times a week or more. They have plenty of time since they make the folks leave in the morning and don't let them back in until late at night. I guarantee one of the extermination companies would donate their services; then if they get good press for doing it, maybe other companies would follow their lead. It's ridiculous when homeless people would rather sleep outside because of the unhygienic conditions in a place that's supposed to help them! I bet if one of the big wig employees took some bed bugs home with them things would change! SMH 🤦🏼‍♀️

RED DRAGON ARCHIVE - I’ve had my eyes opened WIDE the last few months by watching hundreds of interviews of homeless folks on the channel “Invisible People”. I’ve also gotten to know the channel owner, Mark Horvath, who was once homeless himself. Besides the interviews, he vlogs his trips to different cities and usually goes out with local organizations that do outreach. Those videos taught me a LOT and made me get more involved in my community. That’s how I found your documentary...it was in my recommended videos here. 😊 If you really want to get more involved, watch some of Mark’s videos then go back out in another month or so and check on the people you interviewed. Write down some notes on each of them (not in front of them) so you’ll always have one or two things to bring up in conversation and show them you care. Does that make sense? I’m not trying to tell you what to do...because you’ve already done something amazing by making this documentary! It was just a suggestion...since so many homeless people talk about not being treated like a normal person. All of them want COMPASSION, and it’s FREE! But yet most people would rather throw them some change than have a conversation with them. Bless you for showing compassion! Sorry for writing a book... I’m just extremely passionate about this issue. I’m a Disabled Veteran and I now also have a chronic illness (as of 4 yrs ago), and I had to give up my dream career. I’ve slowly lost almost everything and I could be homeless any day... So it CAN happen to anyone! Please keep spreading the word! 🤗

Family House is definitely a good shelter! My grandmother used to work there 2007-2010. And my current girlfriend was homeless there with her twins off and on until she got her place back in the summer. And myself, I was homeless at 19 staying at Cherry Street Misson and got no help. A few friends of mine I met through being at Cherry Street Misson put our heads together and started hustling and all got on our feet. And for 3 months before I had got my apartment in late 2009, a staff member at Cherry Street Misson put his hands on me and I was wrongfully kicked out and they wouldn't even let me get the mail that had came before I changed my mailing address. Dan Rodgers and everyone employed by him is a fraud! Ask anyone who was homeless from 2007 to now, and they'll tell you the same thing I'm saying and the same thing the fellas you interviewed said. Most of them I know and one of them is my cousin.

I do not understand why they or other pest control companies don't offer their services and clean these places up! I moved to Monroe, MI after Toledo now out in Whitmore Lake, MI but not far from Toledo - anyone reading this that does any events or community work to help the homeless - I always have extra clothes; I would love to wash and donate. I'd be happy to come out and help in any way I could. I know this documentary is old but I'd love to help somehow. Good job on doing this!

However, St. Paul mission and the last family one had full transparency bc they had nothing to hide! Thank you for this essential work! My friend ended up in this situation, temporarily thankfully, and also refused to stay in the mission. He said the few days he stayed there, his bike was stolen , which he used to get back and forth to work ( lost his job due to this ) was assaulted by the person who stole the bike , and the bedbug infestation drove him to sleep in tbe snow! He said the bedbugs were what really caused him to sleep on the sidewalks downtown . Thankfully he had a family that helped him get back on his feet . But i will never forget when I ran into him downtown and he told me he cant even sleep in the mission due to all of the bugs, totally infested !
Also, thank you for looking into this, so many are ending up homeless due to the drug epidemic in Toledo , as well as the lack of mental health and even physical health care .

Years ago, Family House was not actually a good place for families. A friend of mine, was single with 4 of her kids, and had to go there. They were treated like shit, and basically the exact same rules as the Cherry Street Mission (your whole family had to be out of the building and not even hang out by the building most of the day, except for kids with lunch and at dinner time). People were stealing from her and her kids, and nothing was being done about it, there. I think she and her kids were only aloud to stay there for 2 weeks, max. They told her that, upfront. To this day she is still struggling, but at least she and her 2 youngest have a roof over their heads, now. Between this pandemic and her trying to fight cancer, I try to help, when I can. I won't let her give up.
As far as the Sparrow's Nest, in recent times, I have not heard good things about there. Kinda same story of unclean conditions and bedbugs.
A few years ears ago there was also like 3 other shelters, but I don't know how many of them are still around. They may all be still around. Idk. I think 1 other woman's shelter and 2 other men's shelters.
Even though I am not homeless, I still appreciate you shining a light on those that struggle more than the rest of us. Those that have fallen through the cracks, tossed to the side and treated like crap. All of us, need help at some point in our lives. Some, more times, than others. I am a disabled female Army veteran, that tries to live paycheck to paycheck, but still helps people around me. Even if I don't have it. I know people that look down on the less fortunate and the homeless people. Instead of talking to someone, to find out and understand that person, alot of people just keep going (and whine and complain about the person they just passed). Damn it! We are all humans! Everyone should be helping one another. Sorry, I am going on a rant. I again thank you for your work, on these topics, and not being afraid to just ask. Please keep it up. 💗

After retiring from nursing (for as long as I can remember) my grandmother volunteered at ‘Mildred Bayer Clinic.” 2 years later, she was running it. She had a lot of connections with doctors throughout her medical career who also volunteered their services. Her name was Eileen Ryan and I very proud of her and greatly missed 🥲

It's totally beyond insane that the Homeless has to call 211 in order to secure a place in a shelter.
Years ago, all you had to do is call a local Toledo Shelter and see if they have a bed available and if they did, then they will hold that spot for you. Now, you have to jump through even more hoops just to lay your head. That's Bullshit. How can the system go so low that they treat the homeless like shit under their shoes.
Maybe the ppl. who run the homeless shelters needs to have mandatory homelessness sensitivity training so they can empathize what it's really like to be homeless.
Also there needs to be more accountability for all staff that runs shelters which will also includes accountability for their board members who also Lords over all shelters
We as a community also needs to contact Marcy Kapturs' office and let her know what really goes on in the homeless community

As a homeless veteran I can say being homeless does suck. The thing that doesn't suck, freedom. You haven't actually ever been free if you haven't been in survival mode so long it becomes comfortable.

I'm gathering that if your homeless and cannot provide for yourself, a person will have to deal with the homeless shelter situation. It does not sound perfect by any stretch, but it's something. Just deal and make some moves.

I am looking for a cousin of mine who is homeless in this area. If you or anyone else knows Johnny Freeman please respond here or message me please. He’s a drug addict and has been for many years. I haven’t seen him in a couple of decades. I do not live in Ohio and was never close to Johnny but I think of him often wondering if he’s alive or dead. He’s a white male, blonde hair and very skinny. That’s all I know but if anyone reading this knows Johnny or has seen him please contact me. Thanks.
