History of the Four Peaks Wilderness:
This Wilderness was established in 1984, and contains approximately 60,740 acres with a major mountain rising up in its center from the desert foothills. The Four Peaks themselves are visible for many miles, and are one of the most widely recognized landmarks in central Arizona. The rapid change in elevation produces interesting and unique plant and animal communities. Elevations range from 1,900 feet near Apache Lake to 7,600 feet on Brown's Peak.
The highlands are covered with Ponderosa pines and some Douglas firs. There's even a few aspen on the north side of Brown's Peak. Below that you'll find dense thickets of pinon, manzanita and Gambel oak. Below that the grasslandsblend into the ocotillo, cholla, saguaro and paloverde growth of typical Sonoran Desert countryside. Canyons that hold water flows often are shaded with sycamores and cottonwoods.
The bulk rock of the uplands in Four Peaks Wilderness is made up of Precambrian granite and schists, although the sheer rock faces of the peaks themselves are a cap of Precambrian quartzite and shale. This rock is all clearly exposed in Cottonwood and Boulder Canyons and along Buckhorn Ridge. South of the main peaks themselves (and rising above Apache Reservoir) you'll find the Painted Cliffs: a zone of layered ash flows and volcanic tuffs deposited during the Cenozoic age. That makes the time difference between deposition of the volcanic materials and the solidifying of the underlying igneous/metamorphic rock between 2 and 3 billion years...
As hard as it is to get around in this broken and incised countryside, back in the mining days there were several roads cut into these mountains. Some of them are still in use as hiking trails. A large fire in 1996 burned off a large portion of this property and formerly treed areas still haven't recovered. This area is pretty dense with the black bears but you'll also find skunks, ring-tailed cats, deer, javelinas, mountain lions and coyotes. You'll also want to look out for centipedes, millipedes, black widow spiders, scorpions and rattlesnakes.

It must have been january 1981 we made a Sunday morning run to the Peaks , hauled a truck bed full of snow back to Bell rd for a snowball battle with the neighbors. Where did the time go?😂

That backside of Four Peaks Trail can be treacherous in the snow.
I did that after a good rain...in a Jeep Wrangler Sport...was like driving on a melted marshmallow...
My buddy and I did that in the late 90’s in his CJ7. Camped up top. I did it a few years later in my 1965 ford 2wd. Beautiful place.

Nice to see water in the lake! Back on 05’ you could drive 1/2 mile down to find water. It was really dry then
Four Peaks has been off my list for some time now. I used to drive it on a regular basis starting back in the 60s when it was a real 4x4 road or you wouldn't make it. We'd sometimes camp up near Lone Pine Saddle and you could see the fountain down at Fountain Hills when it ran 24/7 and was illuminated at night and then down the El Oso road on the backside to Roosevelt Lake. We'd use our geological survey maps and check out the various springs on the mountain. We'd also follow the ridges heading south from the road that would eventually drop us into Butcher Jones Beach at Saguaro Lake.
The road has been greatly improved since then to where you could take your land yacht up it after church on Sunday. The proliferation of everybody and their dog with an ATV, UTV, dirt bike or shiny new 4x4 using the road as their personal race track and party area has totally soured it for me. Same holds for the Sugarloaf Mountain road on the opposite side of the Beeline highway where it leads to Sycamore Creek.........totally ruined.
I definitely get that. A lot of things really change over time. Some for the better, some for the worse. Alot of the woods and places that I played in when I was a kid, aren't even there anymore. Progress can definitely be heartbreaking
Lightning started the fire in the Four Peaks area.
Apparently, not the area in my video... I knew it looked suspicious.
I do know that lightning caused the major fire. It will take years for that area to recover

Someone’s car caught fire and they pulled over and caught the dry bush on fire. It was windy and jumped the road. Tfs 🤙🏽🌺

There was a massive fire from what started down on BUSH hyw June 2020 Kept us off the trails during the Vid nightmare. It burned thousands of wildland. .....
The Bush Fire was a human-caused[1] wildfire that started in the Tonto National Forest northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. It burned 193,455 acres (78,288 ha). The fire started on June 13, 2020 near the intersection of Bush Highway and SR 87 and was fully contained on July 6, 2020[2]
This was literally the first trail I ever ran back in 2007. I had just bought a Arizona trails guide book and Jeep Patriot. 17 years and ten jeeps later….. let’s just say it’s been quite a ride! Love four peaks. It’s beautiful and has some good hiking trails off it.

Apache lake is worth a visit. It seems they have opened a bit more of Apache trail over the past 2 years. Last time we went that way, it was closed at the lake turn off.
Yes and hopefully sometime this year they will open the remaining section so we can go all the way through
That area was burned due to a car fire. The person stopped on the highway heading south on the 87 just south of the Bush Highway and the fire spread to the brush along the highway.

I got to do that trail before the Bush fire that started on June 13, 2020 near the intersection of Bush Highway and SR87. It burnt up to 193,455 acres. I heard a Prius broke down on the side of the highway and that's how it started, I don't know if that's true though. It's a beautiful area. I am glad you finally got to drive this awesome trail. You will have to do the Apache Trail when it opens back up. Back in the 60's we used to drive across the dam before the bridge. That was so much fun as a kid. I think it would be a little scary to me now.

Was lucky enough to do this in a Nissan sentra in 2016, took 2 hours and had to use Low gear a few times because it was sprinkling and later snowed when we go to the saddle
Yeah a Sentra would definitely iffy nowadays. Only in three or four sections though

The one I have works perfectly fine for right now, but once that one goes out I'm going to upgrade.

I'm not saying it's not possible.... There are a few spots where even I scraped, and I have 12 in of clearance. Definitely a few bad washed out areas now. I mean I wouldn't bring a low sitting sports car out there....

So the GPS function works good with on X? Do you need to subscribe to get it to work right? If you subscribe, do the advertising quit?
It does. Just make sure you download the offline maps before you head out. That way when you lose service, it still works. I've never seen any advertising on OnX... I couldn't tell you. I use both OnX and trails offroad. Both have their strong and weak points but I love them both
