- How To Hit The Perfect Slice Serve in 3 Steps - Perfect Tennis (Episode 3)
The slice serve is one of the best ways to start a point in tennis. For a right-handed player, it allows you to open up the court on the deuce side and for the left-handers, it allows you to open up the court on the advantage side.
It's also very effective at jamming players with a body serve.
In this video, Coach Simon of Top Tennis Training will show you how to hit the perfect slice serve in 3 steps.
Step One: The Grip
The continental grip will allow you to keep the racket on edge and carve around the top right side of the ball.
Step Two: The Contact
Try to make contact with the ball at around 1 o'clock for right-handers and 11 o'clock for left handers.
This contact point will help you create the slice but also hit down on the ball slightly to bring the ball down.
Step Three: The Body
Try to imagine throwing your right shoulder into the ball, which will help you uncoil with the upper body and create the perfect alignment of your shoulders to create the short angle.

I like this guy. He presents the videos brilliantly. Thank you.
Many thanks for the support Nick 🙏
All the best
Simon
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial you're very welcome Simon.
Top notch player and coach ….Thanks for your help Simon ❤
Now I practiced my kick service a lot (9 months) by watching your lessons and improved a lot. It is time to give effort to slice serve I guess. Thanks for what you are doing The Coach!
Vamos 💪
Good luck with the improvements
thanks for the 3 tips Simon...
My pleasure?
Thanks coach Simon for another excellent lesson 👍
Many thanks 🙏
Brilliant, thanks again Simon.
Many thanks 🙏
Great instruction for me, I usually have more spin on my slice serve, but no pace, I’ll try hitting at 1 O Clock.
Thank you are very good at explaining
Thanks coach Simon!
My pleasure 🙏

Are there any lessons you would like to see in the future?
Brilliant as usual ❤
Thank you for the support
Thanks for your great tips
My pleasure 🙏
Thanks for the video.
You are welcome!
very good explanation .thank you so much sir
Many thanks 🙏
Brilliant video as always.
I love that you address the issue with the 3 o’clock thing. I agree that it has its use for building the slice serve from scratch but as you said, it’s more of a “glide serve” than a slice serve and the last thing you need the ball doing is *trying* to glide long/wide of the service box.
Also that looks like Groth slamming a few serves past Simon there. Is that right?
Many thanks 🙏
Yes, that is Sam Groth smashing down aces 🤣
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Good of you to edit out all of the return winners you hit on his 125mph+ T-bombs 🤪
🤣
hello, do you have a chance to add Turkish subtitles to your videos?
Maybe in the future, it’s very hard to add subtitles without external help
Hello Coach Simon,
Could you make a video on how to decide a racket's weight?
How do I find a proper racket weight?
What a great serve you have, Simon. Pleasure to watch. Can you make a video of tennis serve where you break down racket drop and that supinated position of arm before contact? Main source of power on serve is that full pronation which comes from whole arm, starting from shoulder, not just forearm or wrist. Please discuss this.
Many thanks 🙏
I cover that in this lesson - czcams.com/video/6998O764rKU/video.html
This coach actually shows two types of slice serves. Unfortunately, he did not distinguish nor explain these two types: the first type he called carving when toss the ball near 2 o'clock (no pronation with carving), and the second type combining top spin with side spin when toss the ball near 1 o'clock (strong pronation with this type). Most atp pros only do second type.
You can always make a video on the subject 👍
I love your channel. Thank you for posting all these great videos. Do you have a video or tips on what tactic to use when you play and suddenly became tired. I noticed in recreational matches players get tired at different times during the match, which makes them perform bad for a short time and often give another player time to gain back advantage. Kids have this dynamic too. After extreme tiredness the player will recuperate and suddenly start playing well again. More often, it will be too late as another player gained too much advantage. So what are the tips on playing during a few minutes of extreme tiredness?
In moments like those, it’s important to have some snacks/drinks to help you regain energy.
Energy bars, isotonic drinks, fruits, anything that can give you a boost will help
I find myself having more slice going single hand western grip. Is this a good technique or should I try to stick to continental
Lots of insights in this video, thanks Simon. The tip you gave about moving the right shoulder into the ball, does this usually only work for flat/slice serves or do you use that technique also for the kick serve?
It can work for the kick serve if you stay side on and throw the shoulders upwards only, instead of upwards/forwards and rotating
If you have shoulder issues its imperative you do not have a ball toss at 1 o 'clock as the impact on the ball is too much for the shoulder and too far away form the body. Its best to learn at 12 O'clcok and just change the angle at contact and lean how to do it, you have more power as the ball is in line with your body
If you have shoulder issues, probably best to not be working on your serve before you rehab and fix the shoulder injury. Just a thought 🤣
Imma try this today doing dubs!
Vamos 💪
Hi coach. Great video. Question , I was practicing my serve couple days ago and my shoulder hurts since then. What am I doing wrong? Yes I have been playing for just couple yrs so I still learning. Thx in advance for your answer
That’s impossible for me to say without seeing your serve
my golf coach told me this motion (along with american baseball pitchers and professional bowling) is the same "throwing" action needed to hit a right-to-left hook spin shot....do you agree?
Honestly I don’t really know the technique involved in that sort of golf shot, so I couldn’t agree or disagree with them
Haha what is recently going on with bashing "The Coach" and his teaching methodology :D? Openstancitis, Dominant Eye Bs, and now the 3o clock slice serve haha Love it
I've always taught the slice serve to be hit at 1 o'clock and have debated with many coaches about the 3 o'clock method.
The dominant eye is now damaging players in many situations and openstanceitis is something I have had in my life and I actually made a video on it last summer - czcams.com/video/zpcqd5iPCwI/video.html
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial So these Videos are in no way refering to Mr. Mouratoglu? Maybe I misunderstood something. Anyway I agree with your take on things
He’s exposing himself in his lessons. Here’s a question to ask yourself: do you snap your wrist on the tennis serve or pronate? What do most pros do? Snap or pronate?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Pronate. Snapping the wrist leads to injuries. Pronation is produced by the forearm and shoulder. not the wrist. Even the great Sampras, who is often misquoted as having a great wrist snap at the top of the serve, still has his wrist in neutral position after he makes contact with the ball but his elbow is in a relaxed, bent arm position after a heavy forearm/shoulder rotation. 😉 Simon has taught us well!
Hey Simon, thank you for the lesson. Question: it is well known that you should pronate on all servers. It seems like this slice technique doesn't have pronation at all or you do not mention it?
no it does have pronation just not full pronation. if you are using a continental grip , the pronation should happen automatically to some extent. its just that you dont hit the ball with an open face(or half proination at contact) like in flat but hit the ball with a slightly closed faced ( quarter to half at contact) .
To keep the racket sideways on impact, does that mean you don't pronate when hitting a slice serve?
You're actually pronating later in the motion than you are with a flat serve.
You pronate on all serves if using a continental grip. On a slice serve, you still pronate prior to contact, slightly less than the flat serve, then pronate fully after contact. I cover supination and pronation in this lesson: czcams.com/video/6998O764rKU/video.html
Is there difference in how you hit it between Deuce and Add sides? I found that for me it is much easy to hit slice from Deuce side compared to Add for some reason. And also another question, if you want to hit Slice serve as your second serve as well, how do you increase consistency of this type of serve?
I’ve replied on the other comment 👍
Thought your carving practice was producing good enough serves - for us older guys can we just do that instead of jumping?
Absolutely 👍
What about pronation with the slice serve?
After contact full pronation occurs
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Yep, that's the hardest part. I suspect I sakellaridi my slice and if I think about proation it occurs too early (I flatten it) or I shank it.
like
I want that slice serve...😢
Time to work on these tips 👍
coach is using Hyper G Sheeeeesh
Are those strings good? I’m using a cheap poly string currently but looking for some proper strings to test
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficialI like Solinco's Hyper G because I can swing more freely and keep the ball in play with its great spin and low power, but I don't like it for its lack of feel on the ball. My favorite so far has been Solinco's Confidential. It has much better feel/ball pocketing on the ball. It has slightly less spin and slightly more power. With those characteristics I am better able to direct the ball and put it deeper in the court with the same strokes that I would use with Hyper G.
Lefty with slice serve… ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋcheat
