Im for sure being a pilot , I love planes and I’ve always wanted to be a pilot , the biggest problem for me could be “not being with my family” but in my case...Im completely alone in this world , so there is no problem for me😃

I’m currently in school with debt for something I don’t even want, never took my dream of being a pilot seriously bc others told me it’s too hard and not worth it, now I regret going to college and not pursuing this. I’m only 19 and am GOING to be an airplane pilot, it’s gonna take much longer than it should for me though, PLEASE take your time on making life decisions and don’t take everyone’s advice, follow your dreams and work hard.
I’m in the same boat, have been in university for 2 years now and looking at 3 more years to complete my degree (in nursing, which I don’t really want either). I project I’ll be 23 by the time I graduate. But I think having a bachelors is better than not. Part of me is so confused about what to do or what my future will be like, I’m just hoping I’ll find where I’ll truly want to be. Good luck to you!

@@nalsra0same as me, I’m 19 as well and been at an university for 2 years. I also thought about doing pilot when I was 17 the summer before I was going to college. But never took it serious. I wish I thought about it more and took it serious. Now I don’t know if I should dropout to pursue this or try both at the same time or just stick with accounting

I have started with no money in high school, when I was just 16. Working double time each holidays and school trips and it made me become an airline pilot with age of 21 for one national airline in Europe :D Long story to fit it in one comment, but whatever is your position, just find your way. It may be long and windy as well, but the key is to not give up on your dreams. Good luck!

Ive flown over a million miles as a passanger working as a construction manager, but ive finally decided to take the plunge quit my job and start training full time. Not excited for the pay cut school and cfi are going to come with, but excited to get started

I loved your reasons. Yes they are pretty much accurate, especially the family part. That's the toughest one.
The minimum rest period is most defenitely happening very often, on a weekly basis on many rosters. Allowing for a max of 1 hr traveling time from the airport the available period is already down to 8 hrs, taking winding down time and preparing to go to rest will wipe another hr. Waking up the next morning will wipe at least another 30 min. Realistically you will during minimum rest never get more than 6 hrs sleep. This often manifest on my roster for up to 3 days in a row

Thank you very much for doing this video. I have always wanted to be a pilot when I was younger, but now over 40…with the top 5 reasons you just mentioned as to why some people may not want to be a pilot…I agree & I think I’ll just continue being a passenger.
if your family supports your wish... go for it... 40s is young, airlines know they still got over 20 years for you since FAA raised mandatory retirement to 65.... believe me once you have a line you'll have plenty of time with family...

That’s literally not what happened but okay.
His dad was a pilot but didn’t teach him as his cfi. What you should do is approach your parents and ask them why they’re too poor to send you through flight school. Maybe then you’ll know

You should do an update to this video and put it in the context of what COVID19 has done to the airline industry. Does it make much sense for a 19 year old kid to spend at least $50,000 over the next 15 months in training only to struggle finding a job in a saturated job market?
It’s not saturated. There’s a shortage.
There will always be a shortage of pilots due to the cost of getting a commercial license and the fact that with each year flights are cheaper and cheaper + more people fly It was calculated that in 2029 with the current rate we will see a shortage of 60000 pilots world wide and there will be more than 390k jobs available so being a pilot will land you a job
I'm 29 and I'm in trying to transition from media to become a pilot. I spoke with three pilots and they each said "do it and do it now." At first, I'm like, "but it's saturated." One said, "No, it's going to be a shortage in less than 10 years. You need to get your foot in the door, start now."
So they each advise that I find flight and ground school training at an affordable rate, take loans to cover it, and slowly defer the loan and pay the interest or whatever I can. Then, when I get hired at a regional, I can start paying back the loan aggressively. Then, when I make it to the airlines, I can pay it off even more aggressively until it's fully paid off in less than 3 years.
I don't know how ideal it is because I'm not in the situation. But, so far, the pilots I spoke with are saying the same thing.
@@ryanb6093 I 'm on the fence about training. I would like to be a commerical pilot, but taking a gamble/risk on getting a loan, then knowing if you have heart problems in the future, you could lose your medical certificate.

Started flight training in the 90s, and flew out of a small international airport during training. Realized the first year that it wasn’t for me. Mainly because I like being home and around my family. Loved flying, but made the long term change and went into engineering. As much as I loved flying, no regrets
I am I'm your position right now, I am flying however I am making the change to study Psychology and become a teacher instead so I can come home at the end of the day and be around friends and family, however part of me won't let go of aviation idk why eventhough I'm not finding it joyful anymore
I wanted to be a pilot when I was in high school, especially a fighter jet. But They told me I don't have 20/20 so I couldn't. Gave up on it. and a few years ago, I just had the chance to do the eye test for free. I was told I have slightly better vision than 20/20. My girlfriend (now fiancee) says it's now or never, why not give it a try?
The weather is unpredictable now, but I have my first flight class this month.

Training vid please and not only the flying part but also the safety procedures and evacuations, nobody talks about that would be great to learn about that aspect of the airlines.

Garrett, you are sooo right about flying, it is the best career and the young people today have the best chance in the world of making that happen for themselves. I was not so fortunate as I try to rationalize why I didn't push harder to have an airline career as a pilot. Oh I've been with a major airline for close to 50 years now and probably, as you point out in Ep.13, I should have put more of other things aside and concentrated on my flying. I got my private in '73, then instrument, commercial, multi-eng, by '81 ... It's easier for me to rationalize other events that put my flying career on hold, wife, children, then in '80s I went to commuters, (as you know where all pilots built their hours), like Air Wisconsin, Great Lakes Aviation, etc... only to be told that they raised their requirements to (get this) higher than the majors. As I was told they were tired of losing their pilots after 1 year. then of course Eastern Airlines folded putting God knows how many pilots in line up and then Braniff Airlines folded... i couldn't get a break... I love flying and now am working on my soaring addition..I have always been healthy as you point out. I have been around airplanes my whole life and given a choice right now there is nothing I wouldn't do even for the right seat. Like i said earlier the young kids today have the best chance in EVER to be a pilot.. There is such a shortage that many of the Major Airlines are paying for your training above private... United even has commercials about being an Airline pilot..

I would have to disagree with right now being the "BEST" opportunity for young people to become pilots. Yes demand for pilots is at an all time high, but most young people can barely afford college degrees without some kind of tuition assistance, and full flight training up to ATP can cost upwards of 100k-120k nowadays. and the majors arent offering that much in the way of tuition assistance/reimbursement comparative to the full cost of training.

I love flying and I love traveling. I don't plan on starting a familiy until I'm 35 so I don't really care about that. I'm more than happy to take on this job.

Could you do a video on the hiring process and how that works? I’m going through flight training right now and it seems to be that no one really touches on the hiring/job seeking process in school
If they would people would do something else most probably. Hence that would have a higher drop rate compared to people that actually go through the training.
Don't bother yourself with all those stories about hiring process. Just be current with your ATPL knowledge, understand principles of flight, review jeppensen chart manual i be cooperative on the sim check. In this way you will not overstress ;) At least it worked for me ;p
I'd like to know how you find so much time to workout. Your job overwhelms personal time. If it's not the days away from home, it's the toll jetlag takes on the body.

Thanks Garret for bringing more clarity towards being a pilot. However, I have an interest in the Dassault Falcon 900. And I like to know witch school I would start off from a "hypothetical " standpoint in order to fly such a plane?
Ronald Davis it’s all the same. Once you’ve gotten your commercial, multi engine and instrument ratings, you just have to build flight time. Once you have the hours required to command such a position, you apply for companies that fly the Falcon. It’s still generally gonna be 1500 hours (ATP Mins) however insurance can dictate different hour requirements.
Being away from family is definitely one of the biggest hinderances for me.

As a truck driver. The only real difference is my medical cert is every 2 yrs as compared to 6-12 months. The family time away for me is 6 weeks away then 4-5 days home. Our work schedule is DOT regulated. I would love to be a pilot!
I take medication and i was told that i have to get off it in order to get a medical for private pilot license. Fortunately i can still fly as long as i am with instructor but cannot under no circumstances fly alone.

Love this video, becoming a pilot is still my dream, but it gives a great insight of which things you should be aware of. What about Pilots and Tattoos? As I already mentioned I really want to become a commercial pilot and I'm thinking about having a little plane tattoo on my upper arm. I still have't done it because I'm afraid that it would have a negative effect on my application. What do you think about it?

You can have any tattoos you want as long as they're not visible while working.

This is definitely a dream job for me but it sucks to hear how often your gone from family :/ I have a 7 year old and I would just hate to miss time with him.
It’s all relative. Here is my experience with having a “normal” M-F type job and now working as a pilot 15 days per month (Note: I am not married and do not have children so take that into consideration). For example, when I was working a “normal” day job with a 1 hour commute, I would leave house around 0630 for work and return home around 1800 (traffic was heavier in afternoon). Then make dinner, cleanup, pack lunch for next day, enjoy some free time (tv, work in garage, etc) then go to bed and repeat. This was Monday thru Friday. So my weekday evenings at home basically gave me about 2 hours of free time to do what I wanted (which isn’t much time). And then the 2-day weekend went super fast, and bam!…it was ,Monday again and back to work. Now, as a pilot for a large carrier….yes, I am completely gone 15 days a month. BUT…the other 15 days I am completely off and I love that. To me, it is a much better quality of life than what I had before (for me personally). I turn my work phone off, I do not look at emails, and my time is my own).
Nothing can stop me from becoming a pilot. I was meant to do this. It’s pretty expensive and I can’t afford it rn but I WILL do it. 😤

Depends where you fly. I’m in an integrated program in Canada and it’s about 18 months but i heard of students in Florida who went from 0 hours to Ppl, Cpl, Multi-Ifr in one year.

I’ve only been interested in being a pilot recently from playing flight simulator. My uncle is a pilot. I was always scared of heights but now that I’m over that it seems very interesting and cool to do, I might ask my uncle what it took him to get where he is now and then try to follow that path
The main problem for me though is cost. I don’t want to end up in too much debt

The point you made about losing your medical if something uncontrollable happens is really scary to think about! Would you recommend getting a degree in something unrelated to aviation just for a plan B in case something like that happens? if that makes sense?
i’m 17 and is friends with a pilot, he told me that if i want to become a pilot, i should always have a backup plan in case something goes wrong such as failing to obtain my class 1 medical. hope this helps.
If you think of everything, and every reason, why not to do some thing, you’ll never end up doing anything. If you want to do something enough, just do it.
Will be attending ATP flight school this year. I’m excited not really the best test taker but I’m gonna push through.

I went to ATP and I had to withdraw due to very little time to train on each block and I got paired with a horrible instructor who was no help. I went up to director of training to get paired with another instructor to no avail. 2 months I was forced into withdrawal.
The next flight school I enrolled mom and pop, I learned more in one day than I did in the whole two months.

Atp is tough. You need to make learning about flying your number one priority. It’s lots of focus and a little fun when you can squeeze it in. I just passed com and in the CFI academy right now. It’s tough but doable. You’ll here a lot of good and bad about the program. Most of the bad are from people that were unsuccessful in the program. If you are a slow learner then a mom and pop shop may be better for you because they tend to go at your pace. I’d suggest coming in knowing as much as possible. It’s a lot of self studying once your in anyways. Best of luck and sorry for the late response I don’t have notifications on.
Im just starting out and honestly the medical kind of terrifies me. I feel like I finally found my passion in aviation but I do have a couple questionable things in my medical history, namely I had a super minor seizure many many years ago (isolated event thankfully, was literally discharged from the hospital an hour later) AND I was medicated for adhd a while back. Fingers crossed It'll be okay. Ive read stories of people passing with much worse than just this but Ive also heard of people failing it for less.

I'm starting at a danish flight school this august. It's a intergrated course which takes around 20 month to complete with the cpl atpl and mcc. Believe it or not the record down there is 11 months and 22 days for the whole course.

Which is not totally fair in my opinion because now not everyone is getting a fair chance to follow their dreams ;)
health part is huge for me, I'm getting ready to start flight school but a personal goal I set for myself was getting my shit together and losing the extra weight first. The way I see it if I cant take care of myself how can someone expect me to take care of a beautiful machine.

My husband is thinking of a career change and I'm terrified of him never being home. No amount of money in the world is worth missing out on your family and children. I will never understand this.
Its not like your never home. With any job you will always be away from home (unless you work from home obviously). Pilots are gone maybe 2-3 days out of the week and home all day for the rest of the week. It's just simply a different schedule of work than what most people are used to. Most pilots only work 75-85 hours a month.
