    Awesome video . I’ve seen many vids on thumb over barre chords but this one is easily the best , you show the grips and the embellishments/tricks . Great job

    Thanks for this! I always wondered why all the greats used thumb barre chords, when it semi-limits some of your movements. I didn’t think about all of the sliding and stuff you can do using the thumb

    I can’t seem to get the high E note to ring out when I Barre with my pointer finger. Although when I don’t have my ring finger on it rings out but when I put it on it just deadens. Any tips would help!!

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  Před rokem

      Are you strumming or doing arpeggios, etc? Because if you are just strumming the dampened E gives it a cool scratchy sound.

      I’m strumming but when I try to do hammer ons with my pinky I can’t do it bc it’s deadend. Only on the B string I can.

      Do you mean roll wrist to give my finger more room to play in (like pointer, middle,and ring) I tried it but when my pointer finger goes down I notice that my other fingers don’t curl as much in order to let the notes ring the kinda lay flat and end up muting :(

    How come you don’t use your pinky on the A string?

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  Před 2 lety

      The stretch is really worth it. The A string is just the 5th interval, harmonically the least important note and we have another 5 interval that we are playing on the B string.

    I've watched a lot of footage of Hendrix, and I think people miss the point. Mayer, Fruscianti, SRV, even Mayfield ( who used an open F# tuning) may indeed grab a bass/root note on the 6th string with their thumb. This is seen even in early country and blues players. However, all these players have to revert back to a thumb behind the neck classical position for, say, a 5th string root minor 7th chord if they want to utilize the pinky for hammer/pull-off embellishments. Witness Ernie Isley in "Who's That Lady" or even Hendrix imitator Randy Hansen in anything he plays. Hendrix did not do this. Hendrix somehow could form his 5th string rooted barre chords with his thumb way up over the top of the neck and utilize his pinky. His thumb essentially doing nothing. Basically, Hendrix never leaves classic blues positioning. Only when playing "Johnny B. Good" for that root 5/root 6 Chuck Berry shuffle. This is world's away from someone just grabbing the 6th string occasionally with their thumb. Hendrix was only 5'10", so I doubt his hands were unreasonably large, and he didn't have an Ibanez Wizard guitar neck. So something else is going on here.

      I wonder if jimi had longer thumbs than most people? Big or normal sized hands, I wonder if her had longer thumbs ya know? Giving him extra reach? Or maybe born with more wrist dexterity, or developed it over time, so he moves quickly enough to make it seem like he's doing something almost impossible. Occums Razor if you will.

    i have a tough time with this technique i broke my left thumb in highschool and have two screws idk what to do😔

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  Před 10 měsíci

      To be honest I would think about not doing it. Two screws in your thumb you might just injure yourself more. The advantage of this technique is the ability to switch to the scales quickly, I think I would focus your energy and going from a traditional Barre chord to the scale quickly, if you can do that you don’t need this technique.

    I’m struggling with getting the notes to ring out. Does that just take time or stretches? My hands are a little small I don’t have issue with the thumb and E and B it’s the other two I can’t seem to keep a consistent ring out. It’s quite annoying.

    This is harder than it looks coming from someone who’s played guitar since 9 and currently 30. I never played with my thumb over the neck. This sucks because when I try to play this way my entire hand shifts and I feel like I did when I started learning. Doesn’t feel natural and I’m muffing notes. Wtffff . So I can’t play like this :((((

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  Před 2 měsíci

      Are you playing an electric? It is much harder on an acoustic, it is easiest on an SG if you have one laying around and good news is you definitely don’t need this to be great, many great guitarist don’t play like this.

      It is an infrastructure thing. I live in Colombia, with no air conditioning. When I shoot I have to close all the windows and doors for sound reasons. I also have to do so at the hottest time of day, because of sun position and I shoot with natural light. So now, I am shooting at 2 pm, sun coming through my window, in a small room with all the windows up and the door closed, and I can be there for well over an hour. I am saving up for an air conditioner, but even then I can't run it while I am shooting, I am little stumped about how to fix it to be honest. If I want to shoot a lump of videos for travel reasons for example but the end I am dying and it is like dang near 100 degrees in there like a car with the windows up in a parking lot. On top of all that I run hot to start with, it is a tough spot.
