I literally never get sick of it! This clip has got it all: Brent`s surprise at the call + one of the best catches in the history of football in double coverage + dumbstruck, flabbergasted Notre Dame players both on and off the field looking like someone just $hit in their cereal + Lou storming up the sidelines pissed as all hell. Classic, classic. Whenever I have a bad day, I can always watch this and smile.
It wasn't supposed to be a fade throw. Grbac was just going to throw a quick hitch to Desmond to get the first down and go from there, but then the cornerback rolled up late on Desmond, so he took off. Imagine being Grbac in that situation, expecting to throw quickly and then finding that your receiver is going for it all. What a play.
Brett is the Greatest! That call gave me Goosebumps back then and I’m a diehard Miami Hurricane fan. That other play call also in 95’ Seattle against the Yankees, Edgar bringing Junior in is also a classic call!
this play wasn't gary moeller's call. Elvis Grbac had called an audible and being that he had a formidable relationship with howard since high school; knew that howard knew what was coming. this is the best play i think in the last 20 years of college football beside tommy frazier's amazing td run in the orange bowl back in 1995
The call was a simple hitch route, Desmond took off for the endzone when the corner rolled up on him late. Grbac's pump fake is actually him expecting to throw the short hitch. Apparently all Moeller could think at the moment was "Oh crap!"
UPDATE, Elvis was drafted in the 8th round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the 49ers, played back up to Steve Young for three years, Traded to Chiefs in 1997, played four years for them, Signed with the Ravens, Was contacted by the Broncos to back up Michigan Man Brian Griese, but he opted to retire, Since NFL he has been coaching Quarterbacks at Cleveland's St. Igantius High School!
One of the most iconic sports moments is Desmond Howard going into the Heisman pose after a punt return td vs the hated buckeyes. The crowd goes bonkers, the band too busy cheering to play. The Big House baby. Home of the NCAA's winningest team.
4th down and a foot from the 25 and they go for it all . Moeller was surely a gunslinger. Would've been seriously interested to see what else he could've accomplished if he'd stayed on as coach. Makes one wonder.
I was 8 and watching from row 90 sec 26, my reaction (as Grbac throws) NOOOOOOOO!.....(the catch) YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Best catch I've seen by a Wolverine.
William Olenchenko Gary Moeller did not make that call. That was all Elvis Grbac. That's why Moeller can be seen shaking his head down the sideline moments after what is now known as "The Catch."
Okay, I stand corrected. Just listened to an mp3 of Moeller giving commentary of his own headset audio and of Grbac in the huddle on the sideline during the timeout that preceded that play. If Notre Dame showed double coverage on Desmond, Grbac was to check to a run to Ricky Powers (off tackle right or toss left). In the event Howard drew single coverage, the play was to be a hitch -- a 5-yard stop. Moeller predicted Howard would take the hitch, make his man miss, and wind up in the end zone. Grbac, though, can be heard saying, if (the cornerback) sits -- is playing the short pattern -- then I'm going to let (Desmond) fade. Grbac thought he had man coverage at the line of scrimmage and thus called the pass play. But right around the time the ball was snapped, the corner rolled up on Des. Lou Holtz had a disguised double coverage on Desmond and Grbac didn't realize it till midplay. Grbac's pump fake was not planned. He thought he had him on the hitch. Howard abandoned the hitch when he saw the corner tighten up his coverage and went right into the fade. Grbac was barely able to reel back the ball before letting it go for the hitch, reset, and let it go for the fade. The rest is history. Michigan didn't know it, bur Lou Holtz was actually conceding the run and, consequently, the first down on that play. He just didn't want Howard to beat him.
Annunaki2012return "Luck" of the Wolverines? I take exception about that aspect of the call. Not sure how luck can be injected into this play. That was sheer execution.
@@keithgoblue its because he had to to hold on to it and he laid out for that pass. And he was barely in bounds. Going for play like that on forth and one is a Gamble . That's also where some luck comes in.
So, my parents were married on the same day as this game. Because of this, lots of my mom's family would go back and forth from the reception to a nearby bar to check on the score.
I was there and this was just awesome. It was about time Michigan finally took it to ND. They had lost 4 straight years. Back then it was as if ND did have god on there side.
Always fun to relive this catch. Did you notice Les Miles on the sidelines at about the 1:00 minute mark of the video? Yes, that is the mad hatter sans hat.
Desmond was awesome!! Best receiver to play for michigan in my opinion. There is one player who doesn't get enough recognition that I think was just as good as Desmond but got injured. His name is derrick Alexander. Dude was a stud for real!!
It's amazing where we are now as a program. We were a program of elite players, history and tradition. Rich Rod comes to town and throws it all away for his "spread offense" and garbage recruiting.
wow, what a great play and video! Go blue! This year's game was great as well. If you have an iPhone or iPod touch and you're obviously a Michigan fan, search for University of Michigan Clock in the App Store!
@Holinyx Are you joking? - Jake Long, Mike Hart, Chad Henne, Braylon Edwards, Mario Manningham, Ryan Mallet (for a few years), and many more - all KINDS of talent came to Ann Arbor within the last decade.
unfortunatly, Michigan was heading in the toilet way before Rich Rod came to town. we rode Grbec/Brady/Griese/Woodson for nearly a decade, Michigan just can't get any good recruits in the last decade; enough to pool some winning teams anyway.
It would hard to be pissed about that catch, even for an opposing coach really. You don't get to see that more than a few times in a lifetime, ya know? If the teams were reversed, I would still watch this highlight in ahhhh. JMO
So question… even though the commentator said it was “4th and a foot”, is this commonly remembered as “4th and 1”? Or would I be incorrect referencing it that way? Would anyone know what I meant?

Arguably one of the greatest catches ever
“Grbac to fire for it! HE WENT FOR IT ALL!! A DIVING CATCH FOR A TOUCHDOWN!! HOLY COW!! Would you believe this!?” Immaculate play and call
The call by Brent and the absolute shock in his voice I’ll never forget

Michigan and Notre Dame should renew the rivarly. There were some great games between these two historic programs.
Notre-Dame is tired of getting beat by Michigan. The only series that Notre Dame plays in that Michigan has the upper hand.
@@waynewalton8798 Notre Dame should be tired of losing period. Losing at home to MARSHALL🤦🏿🤦🏿🤦🏿🤦🏿🤦🏿
They will. Guaranteed. GO BLUE!!!

Absolute FKING greatest!!

DealerCamel That's the first I've heard of it.
this doesn't get old. great catch!

I remember this. I remember seeing Grbac throw toward the end zone, and I screamed, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING??!!" Then Howard made the catch. I went crazy.
Thank you for posting this Wolverine Historian. I never get sick of watching it...ahh, I remember the day - the very moment - it happened. Wonderful!
One of the most iconic sports moments is Desmond Howard going into the Heisman pose after a punt return td vs the hated buckeyes. The crowd goes bonkers, the band too busy cheering to play. The Big House baby. Home of the NCAA's winningest team.
The catch itself is great, but the fact this play was drawn up on 4th and 1 is incredible.
MaizeWings97 Moeller didn't draw it up. I'm pretty sure Grbac and Howard went off script for this one.
4th down and a foot from the 25 and they go for it all . Moeller was surely a gunslinger. Would've been seriously interested to see what else he could've accomplished if he'd stayed on as coach. Makes one wonder.
GT Scup Right, but Moeller didn't call that play. That was Grbac.
This won the game. Just look how stunned ND was.
I was 8 and watching from row 90 sec 26, my reaction (as Grbac throws) NOOOOOOOO!.....(the catch) YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Best catch I've seen by a Wolverine.
the greatest college football play in the last 20 years!
Just amazing
Notre Dame know they were done after this. Look at how stunned they are.
Grbac went back to the sideline and told Moeller, "That's how you drew that one up, right?"
He went for it all….fking iconic call by Brent
Very gutsy call on 4th down and 1 foot. Perfect execution.

Good catch! I never noticed him before.
brent musburger did an outstanding job on this call

Desmond Howard and Anthony Carter are the greatest Wolverine football players in my lifetime!

"a DIVING catch for a touchdown!"

I know your comment is old. But thats an amazing cameo by young Les Miles
UM's glory days.
I don't think Gary Mohler called that play. He was walking down the sideline shaking his head.
I was there. I owned Michigan Football from 1991-2000.
0:16 great catch
i've got frickin' goosebumps!
I will never forget that shit NEVER
Desmond was awesome!! Best receiver to play for michigan in my opinion. There is one player who doesn't get enough recognition that I think was just as good as Desmond but got injured. His name is derrick Alexander. Dude was a stud for real!!
Manuel Lara Both were great, but Anthony Carter is No. 1, literally and figuratively.
Keith Eichholz Carter is one of the most underrated Wide Receivers ever to play in the NFL.
I was sitting on the 45 and I immediate thought "he threw it away" but then Desmond Howard caught it.
one of my favorite moments in sports.
The year of Desmond Howard
i can't think of a better clip to watch on st. patty's day.
It's amazing where we are now as a program. We were a program of elite players, history and tradition. Rich Rod comes to town and throws it all away for his "spread offense" and garbage recruiting.
I remember seeing this from the student section. He throws on 4th-and-1 and I'm like "What the --- Oh Yeah!!!!!!!!"
wow, what a great play and video! Go blue! This year's game was great as well.

I nearly sh1t bricks when Elvis did the pump fake. Holy Cow.

1:01 is that kevin bacon playing quarterback?
4 people are Notre Dame fans.
I turned to my brother and whispered…”sometimes you gotta throw it deep on 4th and 1”..
Those days they are a coming back. In Rich Rod we trust. GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HOLY COW WOULD YOU BELIEVE THIS
the best part is at 1:46 when grbac looks back and you think "HA HA!"
1:02: Rick Meier is a cross between Joe Montana and Kevin Bacon.
No, those guys actually had talent.
@quarterback111 Actually 0:55 second mark
@0:55 Les Miles
...on 4th and a foot..
@richie19190 I dare say Charles Woodson more than deserves a mention alongside those two.
And pardon me...I love Bo, but no way would he have done this!
i can only imagine how Ufer would call this.
That guy on the left at 1:37 had pink shorts on!

@ChazzyJoe LOL I was *just* gonna mention that guy!
I remember watching this play. No, what the f--k are you doing ? NO...YES!!!!
How about that play by Skene the O-lineMAN
Mo had guts!!! To bad he couldn't handle his booz
between this play and the MSU fake field goal, the state of Michigan OWNS ND!! this was also a gutsy call
WINNING!
OH MY!
wow
Safety help over the top I think and he stil beat em
I liked the one vs Minnesota where he drags his toe fully stretched out
Sweet
Only one thing wrong with this entire video---1:36--WTF are you doing Pink Shorts?!?!?!?!!
+Anthony DeSimone lol i know
an heisman omen.
@PetertheAverage I said the exact same thing this year
Pink Shorts!!!!!
Heh, that was rough
Musburger haters are in silence
Desmond Howard > Rudy Reuttiger.
1:37 fabulous pink shorts, darling.
1:38 - male in pink shorts
As per usual
Good, i can't stand lou holtz.
didnt even play action LOL
So question… even though the commentator said it was “4th and a foot”, is this commonly remembered as “4th and 1”? Or would I be incorrect referencing it that way? Would anyone know what I meant?
