  • This is some old 8mm (regular 8, not Super8) film footage I got in a box from an estate sale. It's old family vacation footage and looks to be from the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.
There's one part where a bear eats some picnic watermelon.

Alright now. Mr. Crafsman, you instigated a trip down into a rabbit hole with this new video. It appears what you have here is a late 50s to early 60s video of River Rd, Gatlinburg, Tn. Interestingly, Ogle's grocery has a long history as the store began in 1850 and was passed down in the family until 1970. Now Mountain Mall and Ripley's stand in its place. Carroll Blankenships mercantile, with the rocket ship ride, was west down River Rd. Now the bear and cub...we all know they were a problem after tourists began feeding them. Great find!

GREAT info, Rebecca! Glad to get confirmation it was indeed Gatlinburg. But knowing that Ogle's was where Mountain Mall is now... that really places it for me. I can completely picture that location, as we go up there about every 3 years. So incredible to see the place as it once was.

I grew up in Eastern Tennessee and I remember going to the Smokies as a kid and seeing bears come right up to people for food. Seems crazy to think about today, but that's just how it was back then. I still love spending time in Gatlinburg (and Pigeon Forge), but it's not quite the same special place it was when I was a kid.

I was thinking about how sad it was that probably none of those people (or their kids/ grandkids probably by now) know about this film, and then you talked about that. But at least it was sold to someone who treasures and appreciates it, even if it wasn't the family. Also, aside from the bittersweet thing, this was really interesting to watch from a historical perspective, those old cars, the clothes they wore, really neat to see.

    Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day
Mama, don't take my Kodachrome away
Oh, dear CrafsMan, my father was a 8 and super 8mm film person, he took so many films of us, I have a film of the moment my sister met me for the first time in hospital, me being a newborn, and that was 52 years ago! Now everybody has their memories in a phone... would they keep them or will they disappear as they change for a newer mobile.,.. will they regret losing their memories? Mine are kept in tins, very similar to the ones you show, and have been digitalized as well so it is now easier to watch them. My father edited the films piece by piece, then sent the edited roll to get a soundtrack ribbon on and then recorded music and voice, mixed in his old big roll magnetophon and then passed it to the edited film about our vacations and things. It was his hobby and also he earned some money doing it for other people. I am so proud of having my childhood summer holidays thoroughly documented. He also made some films recreating Fairy tales, like the Milkmaid, if you feel like it you can have a look here, this is an English version, the original version is in Spanish: czcams.com/video/EP_cXbA0eK8/video.html

I used to do "old school" film editing myself. I shot footage of me showing how the splicer on this Kalart machine works, but ended up keeping it mostly about the family's vacation footage.
That short film is phenomenal! There's just so much warmth and charm to the film medium, and this was so well-edited and performed. Delightful!

Your concerns about how the digital age being lost in time is not alone. I have seen many reports of historians and archivists discuss that specific topic. How with copies once they are produced as long as they are taken care of will remain for possibly centuries but digital formats change might cause the inability to access all this stuff people produce now. (Something like in one year as much as everything done before digital came along) Even most pictures are never printed and those that are do not survive for long due to the technology causing fading and stuff over years rather than decades

LOVE this video! In the future, we won't see anyone doing this sort of thing with smartphones. This film stuff is like Magical...like Alchemy - I recommend everyone to find a way to go through the process of loading negatives into a cannister, taking pics, developing negatives, and developing out some pictures (using an enlarger and whatnot) The tactile aspect, the smells of the chemicals, the darkness, the quiet, the red light...its all meditative and relaxifying. Used to do it back in the 90's. So peaceful and creative. Keep SteadyCraftin' XOXO

I’m old enough to remember setting up the projector to watch home movies. I still remember how much I loved the smell of the movie screen that snap-rolled back into the blue metallic tube. I don’t know WHAT made that smell (maybe I don’t want to know), but I loved it.

My family had a projector and slides of our camp in the Adorondacks we used to watch all the time. This makes me nostalgic. The camp has long been sold but is still there. My mom and I took a ride out to it last year and met the new owners. How strange is time that it distorts our view. What once was the size of a great camp to an 8 yr old child was now a small cabin.... But I digress. Loved this video. Made me feel homey.

Priceless footage of the MIssissippi Delta in the late 1940s and 50s. Amazing! Even found the family who was in it. Hey Crafsman! From what I can find out, that big old 35mm film is a copy of "Les Jardins de Mouton", a film about the gardens of Captain Robert L. Mouton, in Lafayette, Lousiana, and dates to 1940. Lafayette U has a copy of it in their archives. I can't really find much else, and I can't post a link, but here's an excerpt from their listing:
    "Collection 468
    Mouton, Robert (Captain) L. (1892-1956). Film, 1940
Robert L. Mouton was born in Duchamp on October 20, 1892 in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. Mouton moved with his parents to Lafayette, where he attended public schools. He graduated from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). During WWI, Mouton enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving as an interpreter and intelligence officer attached to the first squadron of the first marine aviation outfit overseas from May 1918 to January 1919. After the war, he returned to Lafayette and engaged in horticultural pursuits. He served as mayor of Lafayette from 1919-1927 and 1931-1935. He was a postmaster from May 1929 until November 1930. He served as a member of the United States Marine Corp Reserve with rank of captain. He was a delegate to the 1936 Democratic National Convention, and was elected as a Democrat to the 75th and 76th Congresses, January 3, 1937 - January 3, 1941. He died in New Orleans on November 26, 1956. He was interred at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Lafayette.
This collection consists of a 1940 film of Captain Mouton’s Les Jardins de Mouton in Lafayette, Louisiana with native cypress and oaks covered in moss. There was a grotto or shrine with Stations of the Cross and benches. There is a reference to a rock garden with statuary and a Shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes. Plum trees were in bloom and there was a statue of Evangeline. Camellias were in this garden, which included the celebrated and rare Governor Mouton camellia, Pink Perfection, and the rare “Hermey” There were hundreds of flowering plants, which were rare and costly. The field ends with a solemn salute by Captain Mouton to the Evangeline Statue.
Donated by Richard C. Broussard, Lafayette, Louisiana."
I hope you get to watch it one day! Take care and keep on steady craftin' my friend.
