Shoshana Zuboff: Surveillance capitalism and democracy

  • The collection and analysis of data is changing the way economies operate. Are these changes so fundamental that they can be said to have led to the emergence of a new form of capitalism - surveillance capitalism? If people’s behaviour is made increasingly transparent, do we become a society in which trust is no longer necessary? Are individuals a mere appendage to the digital machine, objects of new mechanisms which reward and punish according to the determinations of private capital? How is social cohesion affected when people become dispensable as a labour force, while their data continues to provide function as a source of value in lucrative new markets that trade in predictions of human behaviour? How should we understand the new quality of power that arises from these unprecedented conditions? What kind of society does it aim to create? And what ramifications will these developments have for the principles of liberal democracy? Will privacy law and anti-trust law be enough? How can we tame what we do not yet understand?
    Shoshana Zuboff is a social scientist and author of three books, each of which has been recognised as the definitive signal of a new epoch in technological society. Her latest book, The Age of Surveillance Capitalism reveals a world in which technology users are no longer customers but the raw material for an entirely new economic system. Zuboff is the Charles Edward Wilson Professor Emerita at Harvard Business School and was a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School from 2014 until 2016.
    Making Sense of the Digital Society
    The current rapid pace of technological change creates enormous uncertainties - and thus the need for explanations that help us better understand our situation and shape the future. The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) and the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) are therefore continuing the Lecture Series Making Sense of the Digital Society that was launched in 2017. The aim of the format is to develop a European perspective on the current processes of transformation and its societal impact. The first speaker of this year’s series was sociologist Eva Illouz, followed by Dirk Baecker, José van Dijck and Louise Amoore. The event with Shoshana Zuboff on 6 November is part of the Berlin Science Week 2019 and the keynote of the DigiKomm conference 2019.

    We became a human commodity in 1913 when the federal reserve began. In the 1930's (Look on your birth certificate, the number given to each person from the federal reserve is there to keep count for money to be printed, debt based money for perpetual slavery) to begin printing more money, the govt. began the scheme to print money based on the equivalent of the citizen born, it's earnings and tax revenue, would regulate how much money could be printed. Then Immigration began as a profit, for each one they could print even more money. Then they began printing money on future citizens before they were even born yet. Now our national debt has been laid at the feet of those yet to exist, which is our debt creates slavery, and slavery of 3 or 4 generations to yet come to be. We are slaves who are brainwashed that we are free, and vote in what we think is a democracy when the choices are not choices at all, but just whom ever they present as candidates, who regardless of party, are controlled by the banksters/federal reserve. We are so screwed. FYI, I for one, left FB the day that I realized that serveillance was their profits, and the hot mic quote by Zuckerberg of "Our customers are fucking stupid"! I quit that day, from daily use, to completely vanishing from that world. I came back for 2 or 3 visits at the 2016 election, to see what the sheeple were thinking, and my page was covered with liberal crap, adds from the democratic party (I'm independent) and when I made a comment I was barraged by libtards I never met, and was amazed at the manipulation, the name calling and berrating for not marching to the tune of the brainwashed democrats, and calling me racist, a Nazi etc. was bizzare, so I came back once or twice to laugh when Trump won, and never clicked back.
    At the end, they discuss removing hate speech and monitoring and just know, one persons hate is another's love, just ask my x wife lol. But removing and controlling content and speech is wrong at it's core and without free speech, which creates debate. Now denying free speech, we are controlled 100% and that control, like money etc. is it will be abused and that kills us and freedom.

      It is already here. In 1960 former president Richard Nixon tried to exploit the use of television for his political campaign against JFK. It backfired on him because of his always showing "5:00 o clock" shadow" that some voters did not like. JFK barely won. in 2008 former president Obama used social media the first time and won 2009-2017. In 2016 Former first lady Hillary Clinton hired the 50 top US research psychologists to direct her campaign, she also received millions of dollars worth of consulting FREE from the CEO of Google to find out what activated people to vote. She developed the Clinton Foundation to provide "soft" money for her campaign. Hillary used a three prong approach and lost ( Google research led by Dr. Cialdini who wrote the book on subliminal "Influence". She used the Clinton Foundation "soft" donor money machine . She spent twice as much money as Trump and lost. In 2016 to present Democrats alleged the Trump won because of "Facebook ads" ( $7,000 worth of them) from Russia and this was debunked. The future is unknown.

    • @stevemccormack9948
      @stevemccormack9948 Před 3 lety +1

      @@POLITICALSTALEMATE Ultimately, the key is to decentralize power. I think laws should be in place to limit Capitalism -put a cap on the amount of money someone can have. Nobody needs more than a few billion(max). The rise of Bitcoin can be a great model for this. It takes power away from government so they can't simply print money for wars as they wish. We can also use Blockchain technology to decentralize voting and changes to laws generally, where people vote for everything and congress is eroded. The old system is completely corrupt and dysfunctional. What does not work gets done away with. Millions of people voting on a law is far more democratic that 200 corrupt politicians. Look at the way Congress is doing nothing except holding up an illusion of democracy.

    Agree with what's happening but not with the conclusions as to solution(s). The solution is in individual awakening at the grass roots level, a deep and true movement wherein those who know find one another and begin to work together voluntarily to effect change. And this depends entirely upon each one, via our inner connection, awakening to his or her own personal sovreignty. A movement of collective action will, as always lead to totalitarianism and continued division in my view. We are already over-regulated and imprisoned by a plethora of laws on top of laws that are hidden within yet more laws. First to change must be the human mind and heart. This cannot be organized, regulated or controlled by a body of laws. But I do believe it is happening. We can learn to use this venue of digital communication in new and better ways. It really IS a matter of tuning in and finding creative ways of dropping out, then quietly sharing our discoveries with one another.

Zuboff didn't answer it and instead led the discussion somewhere else.

      TheSupernerd97 She's just one person. She did her part, exposing this and authoring a book we can all read. It's time for others to take up the sword. One person cannot do it all by themself. Sadly, we have a whole lot of very stupid young people all over the world. They walk around with all these worthless college degrees, spend all their time on social media and gaming, and have never learned how to formulate an independent thought, and think it's someone else's job to fix all their problems. Let them look for and implement the answers. Let them pull themselves away from their addictions to gaming and tweeting and figure out the answers. If the generations that will be most severely affected by this issue don't care enough to do anything, why should someone from her or my generation worry about it? Furthermore, your assertion that there is no other business model blah blah blah, is complete garbage. This is not a business model, it's surveillance. They are not doing this to run a business, pay bills, pay employees, etc. They are doing this to get FILTHY RICH and create herd mentalities and hive minds. The fact that you made such a stupid misinterpretation of what this is really about is just, well, pathetic. Ms. Zuboff may have hope for the future generations, but I don't. Your comment shows how mindless you are. You think it's a "business model". You think it's someone else's responsibility to provide you the answer (And supply you with everything you need to do it), and make it convenient for you, and make sure all your wants are instantly fulfilled, and on and on. Google knows you (and they have nothing to fear).

      it's people who do trolling for a living lol. wouldn't say that this section looks free from neonazis or troll-factory trolls, possibly also independent trolls, but unfortunately, i guess most people making strange, unrelated comments, are just immature and stupid. (i guess mostly kids - though mature kids do exist in the world, but also, sometimes age comes without wisdom.)
      doesn't this remind you of situation with David Icke when he started speaking out 30+ years ago? except now, for Shoshana, all that she mentions are publicly known facts.
      that's why i think most strange comments cone from kinds - those, born after year 2000. most of them never knew life without devices, and do not understand what is she talking about. kind of like people couldn't understand that you don't believe everything that TV is broadcasting because it's widely used tool for propaganda and brainwashing. (not saying black or white - there can be OK stuff on TV too, everything is shades of grey, but trouble is - people lack discernment. people think in contrasts - if someone says this is going on, people understand that "only this is going on", but nope. is it soap operas fault? overdramatizing everything like that... that's happening en masse.)
