    Good videos. Do you have a chart of how much the jumbo wild should weigh every week? Thanks

    The door design on your cages are so clever. Cant believe we haven’t thought to have them open in rather than out. What material did you use to protect the sharper hardware cloth edges? Where can I buy it?

    • @homesteadevolution
      @homesteadevolution  Před 6 lety +2

      The protective strip over the wire is automotive door trim. We get it from Amazon in large quantities but you can get it at most automotive stores such as Advance Auto, Auto Zone, and many others.

      Hello Harlo, Our Breeder cages are made with 1"x 2" wire for the top and sides and 1/2"x1" for the door ends and 1/2"x1" pvc coated wire for the floor.
      The brooder cages are 1/2"x1" all around with the door openings in the front. The floor is also pvc coated wire.

    I've found that in my quail. Some who are behind on weight can catch up eventually, just takes them extra weeks. Also one of my hens always lays the biggest and smallest eggs!

    • @homesteadevolution
      @homesteadevolution  Před 2 lety

      Yes some will catch-up however in our program if they aren't at weight at 4 weeks they are culled out as sales to someone that wants a flock or for meat

      You can not get the wire in Mobile Alabama, either, but it is nice, and softer for all types of small birds, as there will be less food injuries, so the plastic wire is wonderful.

    Hi great videos. How large do your meat birds get on average and what is the largest bird you’ve e=er produced? Also wondering the same question about eggs weights. Thank you looking forward to more videos

    • @homesteadevolution
      @homesteadevolution  Před 6 lety

      Hi Mark, Our average weight on the birds is 14oz. The largest are just over a pound. On egg sizes are average is 14 - 15g however the range is anywhere from 12g to 18g. We occasionally get eggs over the 18g with 30g being the largest however we have found that anything over the 18g mark is usually a double yolker.

  • @UndefinedBailiwick
    @UndefinedBailiwick Před 5 lety

    What's the reason for culling them at 2 weeks if they're under 50g? Is it because of genetics, the feed conversion is lower on them or are they surplus from a hatch? Why not cull them at 6-8 weeks for meat? Also, what do you do about certain birds that constantly attack the other quail in their cage? I had a female that was attacking the other quail in her cage all day long starting at 3 weeks old and it kept doing it for a month. I culled her recently.

    • @homesteadevolution
      @homesteadevolution  Před 5 lety

      When we are growing to replace breeder stock we cull hard. This does include not growing them out for meat as our meat customers have come to rely on a consistent product in that area also. We cull them off at each stage unless they are very close to making weight and then we separate them to be checked again. As to the aggression we have the occasional rare occurrence and when it does happen we usually try to first change the bird out to another covey as sometimes it really is a "personality" issue. Oh and on a side note we really love your ALIAS Name and Photo. But if I had to choose an alias name I would go by Khadgar as we prefer other Blizzard titles.

    • @UndefinedBailiwick
      @UndefinedBailiwick Před 4 lety

      @@homesteadevolution I thought you keep some of the quail meat for yourselves... I was just thinking that you would put the ones that don't make the cut to a cage for your own personal meat. I suppose whole quail chicks are a good food source for some animals, though. I personally don't waste anything on my quail.
      After I butcher my quail, I feed the heads, guts and vertebrae to tegu lizards. They don't eat the livers that much, but I cut the vertebrae up into pieces and they love those. Everything thing else, feathers and bones, goes into a cheap blender to make a bone meal fertilizer for my garden.
      Also, how do you ensure that all your females are being serviced by the males? I saw that your one hatch of over 200 eggs had a 100% hatch rate, which is pretty impressive. My quail are in stacked cages with 4F / 1M each tier and they have just over 1 sq ft per bird. Some of my females aren't missing any feathers at all on their heads and I'm worried the male in their cage isn't breeding them. Should they be more confined so the males can catch them easier?

    • @coreycbernsdorff
      @coreycbernsdorff Před 2 lety +1

      @@UndefinedBailiwick I watched a video by Mike Rose of Southwest Gamebirds that he advocates a larger quantity of birds ("colony"?) 16F/4M. He says that a female will not mate with a male if she doesn't want to. Having a larger colony in the cage, thus more males will give her more breeding options. I'm new and still learning, so maybe this is bad advice, but it sounded good and plausible to me.

    Hi! What is the recommended weight when selecting breeding birds, male-female weight?

    • @homesteadevolution
      @homesteadevolution  Před 6 lety +2

      If you are going for a Jumbo weight it is anything over 10 oz. We recommend checking the birds not only for weight but for confirmation. Check to make sure that their breasts feel firm and full, also check the eyes for clearness and alertness, check the feet and legs to make sure there are no deformities. Also check for coloring. If you are keeping a particular type such as wild type feathering make sure there are no long white wing feathers etc.
