This might be one of the single most helpful videos I’ve ever watched for editing videos. I’ve been doing it all on a MacBook with only 8gb of RAM and every click takes a few seconds. Now I have all the stats I need for my new desktop that’s gonna save so much time
Been editing for years and I still took something from this video to well-done mate. Great work!
I learnt a lot too making it actually, they just need a Score, 10 powerful 1 crap, would make Life easier
@@FilmBooth I know right :P
Good refresher. Haven’t played with computer stuff for 15-20 years and now I need an entry-level thing for 1080 editing.
Tysm! Gave so much great info. Exactly what I needed.
Awesome, glad to hear it
This video is an answer to 4 months of questions. Thank you.
amazingly helpful! Thank you!
Thank you so much for your help . Broke it down for simpleton like myself , love you
Your videos are always so fabulously jam-packed with great info. Thank you again!!
Great tips for a newbie like me who is host going into the world of video editing.. thanks a lot👍🏽
The thing with the external harddrives is so genius, I actually didnt think about that, although editing since 2017 myself lol. Good stuff. :D
Thank you!
great video!
Perfect timing!
Thank you for this well done video.
No probs, glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for this video
This has helped a lot
Thank you , helped me alot i finally understand...
Super love this video mate!!! Just what I need... Teaching geek 🤣 honestly thank you so much buddy.
Thanks a lot!
Very helpful~ thank you~
Thanks for watching 😁
Brilliant video for newbies
Potentially most helpful/informative video I've ever come across for computers; a great big thank-you to you (and your team? I'm not sure if there's a team behind this-- but yeah)
Agree. Well done Ed for a really useful tutorial on how to choose laptop that can handle the demands of video editing. (17 April 2023)
Good information!!! I didn't understand anything :):):)But I sure got the basics to know what to look for.Thank You:)
this topic will stay evergreen .nice video.
Hopefully one day they'll make it less complex
Thanks it all makes sense to me now!!!!
Brilliant, makes me happy when I hear that
Thank you for making this...
My brain is pretty fried from watching...
There's a lot take in when it comes to computers , I wish they made it less complex
Brilliant video thanks 😊 could you do a video on how to set up the 3 hard drives you mentioned?
I bought an off lease Dell workstation and called it done. Dual Xeon CPUs and 128GBs of RAM and 4 TBs across 2 drives. I think I am good for now. :)
The video is more informative than watching MKBHD's videos nowadays. Great work 👍
Thanks for the tips, just ordered an additional 8GB of RAM to get me up to 16GB. Davinci is manageable but slow and clunky at 8GB.
Very helpful
Glad to hear it
Just saw this on 10/23. Thanks for a primer. would be nice to see the next logical extension of this video: how to set up 3 separate drives in MAC OS and in Windows
I’m subscribing right now.
Awesome!! Thanks for that
Seriously, this is the clearest I've ever understood it! ⚡️
i want to get into editing and my laptop just breaks down after i edit together 15 seconds of video. i never heard about the thing with the external harddrives before, i think you might have just saved my bank account so thank you very much!!!
I think i am fine with my pc specs and i won't buy external drives because i will not do 4k editing or such.
720p - 1080p is fine for me
Thnx
I delete my cache files in Final Cut. I am not saying do it but I have had no issues. I am pretty sure cache files just make the editing faster
Could you make a lighting guide?
I want a laptop that is able to do at least 1080p for video editing like making vlogs and around 300-600 anything available within that budget ?
Not sure I understand the 3 hard drives.
1 for video footage. I understand this.
1 for cache. I understand in theory, but how do you set that up?
1 for editing library? I’m not sure what you’re talking about here. Can you clarify?
The way this usually works is you have one hard drive for your current projects you are working on. Usually you want faster drives for that because you are accessing the data all the time and it makes the editing process less clunky.
The cache drive is what your PC uses if and when it runs out of RAM. How you set that up will depend on the operating system you are using be it Mac OS, WIndows or Linux or something even more exotic.
The library he is referring to I believe is your collection of past projects, and stuff you are not currently working on. For this you usually use high capacity drives and they don't have to be as fast. I recommend mechanical hard drives for this because they are cheaper for higher capacity and more archival. If one fails, data recovery is usually way easier. If an SSD fails data recovery is a nightmare.
What's an SDD 🤣 Solid State Drive is the SDD and HDD is Hard Disc Drive ! Ed just had a Typo his is far too Pro to not know I binge on your Videos i don't even need a Friggin PC haha just here for the quality content years later lol
keep up the quality work Ed
You mentioned using external HDs, what size would you recommend for each? You said keep 100GBs open.
At least 1TB
We’re can I buy a pc just to edit and record gameplay that’s already built
How do you use and dedicate different hard drives for different tasks?
And do you have a video where you recommend laptops for video editing?
Would having one ultra-wide monitor be considered having multiple monitors?
Thanks Mate.
I am about to enter into video editing as hobby, editing kids and family video for youtube so I can share with other distance family. For portability I am thinking about to buy laptop that is - 17.3 in Screen, i7-8Core, 32GB 2666 Ram, nVidia Geforce RTX 2060 OR 3060 (both 6GB VRAM), 1TB SSD for OS and 1TB SSD for caches and project files. Would that be good enough to edit 1080P and possibly 4K ?
Alternative is; Thinking of future proof so I don't have to buy another for 7-10 years, if I have to go for 64GB RAM and NVME 3200R/W Storage x 2, and even upping VRAM to RTX3070 8GB, which will cost of extra £500+ all together , would that be worth? or First paragraph configuration is enough?
Or would you advise for Desktop ? I didn't see price different when I have to buy high spec computer so wanted to opt in for laptop however I am open to desktop if that is superior to laptop since Desktop hardware and laptop hardware are made different.
Your advise will be highly appreciated.
If you like editing and think you'll still be doing it in the future then I'd go for the better long term investment, I actually made a video about desktops vs laptops for editing czcams.com/video/k5q_vqdc7tg/video.html
Thanks but I have already watched that.
How do you add an external ssd to the cache Ed?
Are you using Final Cut Pro? I can walk you through that, otherwise it might be similar in other platforms but I'm not going to know as much there
@@FilmBooth No I'm using Vegas Pro at the moment but don't worry Ed I'll figure it out.
@@JeffFrankling ah right, well it'll be when you set up a new project or library, in the preferences maybe.
Main question was not answered: Buying a computer or laptop for video editing?
hey guys, i'm 14 years of age and i live in Leicester England. I have been editing for about 5 years of my life using mainly premier pro and i have been doing graphics for longer than that using Photoshop. I don't want money, I want experience. Have you got anything that i cold help with, maybe try me out of a previous videos files or give me a random task to do to test my ability, all if you are not interested in trusting me instantly (which I completely understand!) hope to hear from u guys, really love the content...been subbed since 500!
Hi Tom, you on Instagram? If so add me, ed.underdog, happy to chat on there, bit easier that way
@@FilmBooth yh I'll add u now
You've got great contents, so maybe you might need to adjust you tittles a bit more, so the algorithm could push your videos to the top in search results... Or something. 👍
Thanks, lots of our videos rank for search terms, in fact this one does too. It just takes time for things to build traction
@@FilmBooth 👍
I just want to use AE to make Instagram edits and I have no idea what to buy/ do ;.;
After effects for Instagram is heavy duty, that's more for motion graphics than editing, what is it you want to make? Try Davinci Resolve, it is an editor and has something like after effects built in for free
All I know is that a 6yr old computer is not ideal for editing
SSD*
wish I saw this 3 months ago.. spend 50K on a proper editing PC for the office
You spent 50k on a computer!! Jesus's that's going to be a beasts
@@FilmBooth I certainly hope so..lol. with you guys helping and guiding me with your vids I will have my first video on the channel in about a week. The studio is almost done. Then I will just have to learn to talk properly on a camara...lol :P
@@thegreenviking1422 the Hollywood studios would probably be jealous of that
Why are we only looking at apple
Looks like someone was burning 😅
