What a pleasure to watch someone react to this beautiful aria who can truly appreciate the performance of these two vocal greats. I have watched numerous reactions only to be left dismayed by people's ignorance; the majority were Americans, as Europeans and people of other countries seemed a lot more cultured. As for Americans, many, if not most, had no idea who Placido Domingo was, and that includes so-called "vocal coaches." They were utterly ignorant of opera in general and referred to this aria as a "nice song," primarily focusing on Dimash's performance, and claiming that Dimash held back because he didn't sing any "crazy vocals" out of respect for the "other guy." Thank you for your wonderful reaction.
Excellent observations here. Not knowing anything opera from vocal coaches is quite remarkable and given Placido Domingo has been famous for 60 years and in the 90's in particular when his presence along with the other two of "The Three Tenors" were often in the limelight outside of opera itself. I also notice we are talking mainly Americans who languish in areas that do not include great Singers in the opera style. For Vocal Coaches I would have thought the genre of opera would figure as examples of vocal technique as part of the overall education of any budding Singer.
I'm an American and I have been stunned at my fellow country folks' ignorance of the great Placido Domingo.
I completely agree with all spoken here. It's a shame American culture has adopted the lower road of music. Fine art has been cut from public schools...and it shows. I pray the tide will turn a bit and with the wonderful connection Dimash has, we will see a lift to a new era in music and culture.

Absolutely loved your reaction! This performance was PERFECTION! Like several others already commented that a lot of reactors had no idea who Placido Domingo is, which I found rather disgraceful and almost insulting to Placido, when he was one of the original world famous 3 tenors. Some of the Dears also reported that Dimash actually had a cold/cough when he did this, but one would never notice from this performance. Yes, Dimash's Mom is an opera soprano. Dimash was offered a post with the Astana Opera right out of university, but he turned that down to pursue his own path, because he didn't want to limit himself to just opera. He could've been opera famous, but then the rest of us Dears around the world will never know him at all. Dimash can't be categorized or put in a box, because he can sing anything and everything. Dimash is Dimash. Love and respect for Dimash and Domingo.
This was a dream come true for Dimash. He shared that, at the age of 5, he had a VHC of a concert by Maestro Domingo and dreamed from that time to meet and work with him. I am certain that Dimash appreciated the opportunity to be a judge on the Virtuoso program, which supports young classical artists, at the invitation of Maestro Domingo. Dimash only had 1 day notice and there was only one rehearsal. It is magical.
Maestro Domingo turned 83 just days after this was recorded.

Dimash has admired Placido since he was 5 years old, and Domingo was introduced to the 'world of Dimash' by his Grandson..

The original concert was held to raise money for the 'Carrera's Foundation (for leukemia). It was also a way for his friends Placido and Luciano to welcome Jose' back, to the world of Opera, after he had succesfully completed treatment for leukemia.
The whole thing will blow the top of your head off... They repeated it again in 1994, 1996 and 1997.
(they also performed 2 benifit concerts in Modena 'Pavarotti's home town' AND Barcelona . So all three Maestro's raised money for charities supported by their friends, isn't that amazing).

He trained in Bel Canto for years, but turned down an offer from an opera company when he was a teen, saying he didn’t want to be locked into only one range and one genre.
Only time will tell, but I think his heart is leading him to experience and perform everything.

Dimash was asked to participate as a judge in the competition for young classical musicians... and then... he gave us dear ones this wonderful jewel.
Maestro Domingo invited Dimash to sing the duet with him the day before. Dimash only had a short night to learn this song in French... and besides, Dimash had a cold with a cough. (You notice it more clearly in the second song at the end of the concert.)
Dimash would never act recklessly towards his duet partners. With good manners and respect, he would never drown out Maestro Domingo (then still 82) with his voice. He even adapts to Maestro Domingo's vocal color.
Dimash opens a new world to many Dears... the world of classical music. You should definitely watch the video (look at the end of the comment)... so many young, talented musicians and the sensitive assessment of the jurors... BRAZIL - Master Davis, I simply love this duet, as do you, seeing and listening to Maestro Plácido Domingo, at 83 years old with incredible vocal health, as wonderful as his career (THE 3 TENORS IS MAGNIFICENT, I'VE SEEN IT SEVERAL TIMES) and alongside Dimash , who honored the Maestro's legacy and fulfilled his childhood dream, singing beautifully, alongside this legend, and in the background this wonderful, very special orchestra. After you've watched this 20-100 times, you will realize this is right up there with the Hallelujah Chorus.
It is great to see someone appreciate these two masterful beautiful talents as much as I do.
I would love to see them do a full concert together, as they bring life onto the stage.
There was a radio show in the UK called Your Hundred Best Tunes that ran throughout the 60s. This duet was pretty much always near the top. The recording they played, by Swedish tenor Jussi Bjorling and the US baritone Robert Merrill, from the early 50s was sublime.
Finally someone who knows both singers and understands what a performance this was. ❤
Thank you. Dimash turned down the Astana Opera to go his own way. He said that he does not want to be restricted to the rules and prefers his own path of what he calls 'neoclassical'. He can sing opera any time he wants to, but not only opera.

Your expression when Dimash began was enough to make me tear up, and I've watched this duet probably 20 times or more already.
The gold standard of the Pearl Fishers duet, for me, will always be the transcendent Robert Merrill and Jussi Bjorling. It is just unbeatable but this version is beautiful. Dimash is such a huge talent and could we just take a moment to appreciate that maestro Domingo is 83 years old! Quite astounding. Thank you for the review.

for the great maestro placido domingo to still perform in his 80s is a treat. granted, he is singing more as a baritone given his age, but none of the great dramatic tenors of the maestro's generation are no longer around to share their gift. hopefully dimash qudaibergen will be able to last the next six decades like placido domingo.

I was introduced to this style of singing at a very young age and you were right once you see something like this live you just feel the emotion of the music 🎶. Dimash's comment to Maestro Domingo was that watching the Maestro on VHS at age 5 brought him to music. That is such a compliment. I can only imagine how Dimash might have felt to be asked to participate as a juror on Virtuosos and then do a duet with such an icon of Voice.

Hey! Your plants are doing really well! Missed you too! I saw a video of when they first met prior to this competition. Maestro Domingo asked Dimash if he would sing with him. He wanted so badly to jam with the boy. Can you imagine? The event was called “Virtuoso” between violinists, harpists, oboes, clarinettists etc.. you’d enjoy it.. Teo Gerbler especially. Dimash was a judge.
