'Thanatopsis' is an early poem by the American poet William Cullen Bryant. Meaning 'a consideration of death', the word is derived from the Greek 'thanatos' (death) and 'opsis' (view, sight).
The idea of 'Thanatopsis' was explored in an experimental short film by Ed Emshwiller in 1962. I use this film - somewhat slowed down and pixillated - to illustrate the composition.
As always the music came first and on careful reflection the visuals were supplied.
This work, I guess, joins others of mine where 'the cinematic' is foregrounded.

This has that “the call is coming from inside the house” feeling to it.

I guess we could take this a stage further and suggest it is a 'call coming from inside the mind'!

Thanks for the introduction to Emshwiller, he had an interesting career, even contributed to Don't Look Back. the sound works well as a compliment to the video. not sure about death as a nude woman dancing around, but oh well, who am I to judge.....

Hi LBZ. I guess my philosophy has been to let the artist pronounce on their vision - if it's a nude woman dancing, then so be it! I take the film to be a reflection by EE on some personal loss - real or felt!! As he has prompted us to debate the artwork, then I take it that he has succeeded as an artist!!

@@MalleableSound that is a sound measure of artistic success! but it also goes to show how much culture has changed in 60 years....the sentiment expressed here seems to have more to do with 19th Century Munchian ideas of morality, compared to the 21st Century where we enjoy nude zombie strippers!

@@loopbasedzero I guess what you are describing is the passing of the 'Munchian' age for the 'Munchkinian' age!!!
