      Mitch Geiger , Some people just assume that others are rich. Especially if that person is young and white. I’ve seen this belief while in college. Black students just assume that ALL white students were rich and I went to a cheap state college on the GI Bill.

      @discorperted gonna chime in here. A trust fund v. College fund really isn't any different. They're both accounts of money set away to be used under a specific reason. For college or for any means designated appropriate by a trustee. The only difference is the arbitrary rules set by the government and the tax rates on the money put into it.

      How right you are, Alex has a fluid vocabulary, he thinks in a nanosecond starts his sentences, explains his meaning and rounds off his sentence. He has an uncritical, humble and engaged personality. He listens intently…. it is hard to actively listen, it requires an interest in another’s thoughts, patience to know for how long and sometimes the wisdom not to add anything from your own experience on another persons time. Unfortunately the interviewer is floundering in unpreparedness, stuck in financial comparisons, whilst Alex is trying to surf over the top to help him out. What I have seen and heard from Alex leads me to view him as one of life’s true gentlemen.
      Dictionary meaning;
      “A gentleman possesses a strong work ethic. He takes great pride in his work and strives to give his very best every day. He is reliable, dedicated, self-disciplined, humble and a team player. He leads and is led well”
      I am grateful for finding Alex, his story, his achievements and the clear understanding that he is here for a purpose other than financial gain which brings him great joy in his life. I am 78, still learning from listening, especially to our young people who are so inspiring.

    Bensinger was just lifting weights at your average commercial gym, getting his cheat reps in for his twelve sets of bicep curls, when someone approached him and said, "Hey, how about I pay you to interview Alex Honnold?" Ben, hesitant for his awkward posturing and previous miss of social queues, took out his earbuds and asked, "Who is Alex Mcdonalds?" No, the expression of the bewildered man's face suggested, "I want to pay you to interview Alex Honnold, a world-class climber." Bensinger in pure confusion glanced around the room as if he were being goated out by a series of hidden cameras before accepting the statement with his most genuine belief. "Okay," he said aloud. Later that afternoon, after having showered and put on his finest collared cotton shirt from the local commercial-chain sporting goods store, Bensinger sat across from Honnold in vexed perplexion, "why am I interviewing this homeless man," he thought.

      what the heck is he referencing with "previous miss of social queues"? The term is actually "social cues"", but spelling errors aside, what cues did he miss previously? And when? And how do we know he missed the cues? Sounds like someone asked him a question he couldn't hear so he removed his earbuds. Trying to turn that two seconds in time into a whole story is hardly skilled; it's just crap writing. And "accepting the statement with his most genuine belief" ?? A good writer uses descriptive terms to enhance the reader's imagery, not to just add a bunch of unnecessary words. And he could use some lessons in punctuation.

In that sense I think its actually a good interview because it allows honnold to show his true nature. True climbers just want to climb, the rest of the details don't matter as much. I love how he's even self aware enough to recognize that free soloing is almost a kind of gimmick that allows him to continue supporting his lifestyle. I think he's sells himself short though, its not technically hard, but it is mentally extremely difficult. Love how caldwell has the same sense of humbleness about the dawn wall, he says "its not that dangerous" (which for someone like him its not), in the same way that honnold says that free soloing is "not that hard".

    I hate how the interviewer compares Alex to an nfl player and brings money into the convo. Climbing is not about possessions or having a bank account or even becoming famous. It's all about having a connection with nature

    • @Kevinschart
      @Kevinschart Před 7 lety +3

      it gives perspective...climbers basically dedicate their entire existence to the sport for very little reward. where as football players, or other big sport athletes, have an enormous payoff for their efforts. I'm not sure why you hate it. I gave me more respect for his dedication .

    • @rud69420
      @rud69420 Před 5 lety +3

      Alex is the one who compared himself to NFL players, not the interviewer. The interviewer was asking about how he lives now that he has money compared to when he didn't. Rewatch the video.

    • @ClearOutSamskaras
      @ClearOutSamskaras Před 5 lety +1

      mushroom Assassin, Honnold brought the nfl players in as a comparison and the interviewer rightly pointed out some key relative differences with an nfl player. One must think about relative differences when making income and industry comparison.
      Furthermore, being able to climb as much as i realized Honnold must (in order to have made his monumental achievement) requires financing one way or the other: bringing this up in an interview is important and relevant.
      What a childish comment you made. Once we reach adulthood our passions that we are actively pursuing (that may or may not generate money for us) must be financed via something. Only fools think that the money issue is not to be addressed. There's no tooth fairy after 10yrs of age. (and 10 is pushing it)
      Cue angelic harp music:
      "climbing isn't about possessions, it's about oneness with nature" yada, yada, bullshit. I guess you were trying out for a Human of The Century Award with all that stupid claptrap nonsense.

The difference between skating in climbing is the state of both industries. Skating exploded when Nike, Adidas, and New Balance got into the mix. I hope the same happens for the climbing industry.
