I would pick a pint of carling if I'm on the piss with mates. It's a beer for a drinking session with the boys. Won't get you too fucked up and is easy on the wallet. Avaliable in a lot of the pubs too as a house option even when I was in Scotland where Tennants is everywhere.
I think carling is great at what it's meant for.

Lidl were just selling this at £6.99 for 18 cans, I’m guessing there’s a warehouse full of it that they can’t shift but people buy it by the trolly load in my store. Grabbed one case for myself cus I haven’t drank it in over 10 years so it’s there if I run out of good beer over Xmas.

You 're right it doesn't try to jump off the shelf, but over time I learned to respect its minimalistic cover. It's a classic. I don't agree that it just does the job. It's got more to it than that. I like it more than Stella Artois for example. Always enjoy it with a meal . It is Carling and very English.

We have a version of this in the USA called Carling Black Label. It's apparently 5% ABV over here but it has the same watery, slightly citrus-y taste which makes me wonder if it's really even 5%. Over here the brand is almost unheard of. The string band clubhouse was practically giving them away for $1 per can and it was surprisingly drinkable, if generic. Beats Michelob Ultra or Bud Light at least.

@@coldestbeer Ok, I have tried Norwegian artic beer, it was pretty good. I also drink wine, doesn't matter if it's red, white or rose. I only buy the very cheapest wines because in my opinion wine is made from grapes and a grape is a grape. I sometimes buy budget tea bags and I can't really taste the difference. You would be surprised how good some of the super market knock offs are! I once made a quiche on the cheap and everybody in my computer class complimented it, I had no complaints! Stella sometimes gets me tipsy, so I only drink very little Stella but it's a nice pint to sup on! I LOVE beer! I don't get drunk though, I will only drink 2 or 3 pints in total when I go out and I never drink on an empty stomach!

Carling Original Lager is supposedly based on Carling Black Label beer from Canada(which is why the cans look that way) which is as popular here in Canada as "Foster's" is in Australia. I don't think that the Canadian beer contains wheat but it does use corn as an adjunct and it is 5% alc. as are most Canadian Lagers. The original brewery in Canada was in London, Ontario, my hometown now but it closed before I was born in the early 1950s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carling_Black_Label It really isn't any better in Canada but I believe all Canadian macro lager beers taste alike as do our macro ales (50, Export etc.) which taste more similar to German Kolsch with a corn adjunct tainted sweetness than an English ale. I had one (called Carling Black Label) on tap when I visited England in the 1970s and it tasted more like a continental lager by then than a Canadian lager which I expected. Now that German beers are better priced here I've returned to drinking German Pilseners like Jever, Radeberger, Wernesgruner etc. and craft & English ales (Abbot Ale) when I can afford them. It could be worse, Canada's favourite beer is now Budweiser brewed in Canada by Labatt!!

I tell you one you might want to review, I had it last week and I thought it was fucking amazing. It was so fucking drinkable. Kanden hells lager, 4.6%. I got 12 of them off Amazon for about £20. Quite expensive but definitely worth the money. If I was you I’d give it a shot if you haven’t already

Really gassy! You need to leave it ages before you can drink it! My husband used to call it weasel water and that is being polite! It's sad that it still so popular, but it's because its cheaper than some.
