I know you were on a budget trip, but you really missed an experience not eating in ship's restaurants. Very high quality dining in a la carte and superior buffet.

Fjords and mountains in Stockholm 🤣 boy I bet you were disappointed

Beautiful scenery, missing summer now.. Just one thing: No fjords where you were, fjords are an Atlantic thing in Norway. What you saw was the Baltic Sea archipelago.

No fjords in Sweden. That country is Norway.

That ferry you were on was actually the biggest car and passenger ferry in the world when she was new in early 90's. She was also the first ship in the world with an indoor mall-type promenade. The cruiseships in the caribbean took alot of inspiration from ferries like you were travelling on and many others. :)

WOW!! We had no idea. It was awfully grand inside, not what we were expecting at all! Thanks for this bit of history, Markus!

@@Peregrination Ey no problem! I have also worked on her sistership a couple of years ago so I know her like the palm of my hands. 😁

Most of the old Helsinki is build from 1850 's to 1920 's so not so early as 50's to 60's :) Style is mostly Jugend or revival Gothic.

You must mean, not so *late* as the 1950s and 60s?

I love Helsinki! The ferry is like a floating town. I plan to ride the same route later this year.

Definitely looks more like a cruise ship than a ferry

No one around here calls them ferries :P Ferries are small ones that go between islands. Tourists expect some small vessel and are always amazed by the size xD

    • @bazodee2
      @bazodee2 Před 4 lety

Cruiseferry is the proper term. They transport passengers and cars between A and B like any ferry would do whilst also offering some cruise ship amenities to keep the passengers entertained.

Funny thing is that the guy that came up with the concept of a promenade onboard ships originated it on this exact vessel and he then introduced this idea to Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and the ship Voyager of The Seas is the first in their fleet to have a promenade such as on Silja Serenade and Silja Symphony.

    5:07 "retro elevators"
well..... i got good and bad news. Those are not retro elevators. Those was modern futuristic elevators... when the ship was built. Its simply way older than it looks.
If you travle as a pair on this route (with no children) i would really recomend splashing out for the promenad cabin. Its not that much more expensive, but you get a make shift double beed.
if you spash out for a deluxe cabin, you get a real hotel room with a real double beed.
