  • 1995 Wrangler steering box was getting worn out, so I decided to upgrade to a 98-99 Dodge Durango steering box.

    My YJ had a lot of steering slop too, I was able to fix it by replacing the lower steering column shaft, the U joints in the shaft had worn out...

    If your steering wheel has play while stopped that usually your gearbox, drag link or tie rods, if your steering is tight but the Jeep starts death roll check your drag bars and ball joints.

    Hello, I did this swap and replaced pump as well as the steering shaft. I am having an issue with how stiff the steering is at low speed. Did you change the pump pulley to a smaller diameter??

    Quick question: are the new Pittman arm and new lines from the Durango box or YJ box? Awesome idea!

    Thanks for the advice man. I have a 89 with a manual box sucks! Going to hit the junkyard and pick a Durango box up. And maybe a gm pump because of the v belt. I'm lazy and don't feel like changing pullys. Gotta fab a mount anyhow. Thanks man

    I have a 95 yj and when it gets past 30mph it will go to the left by itself and to get it back in the lane you have to slow down quickly it has new power steering pump does anyone know what that is

      stuck brake caliper, bad wheel bearing, low tire pressure on left side....probably something on the left side

    My jeep goes all over the road and I did my durango steering box on my yj last nigth. It fit perfect but that play was not my power s gear box it is something ealse, i checked everything ball joins tie rods,track bar estabilazer shock, i even put the front axel on the air moved the tires back a foward up and donw with the pry bar and i cant find the problem. I though the gear s box was my problem. At lease the durango box is a good upgrade!

      I’m starting to learn more about caster. My jeep still handles like crap but my steering slop is gone from the new steering box. Usually when you lift your jeep you change the caster angle making the steering more reactive. From what I’ve seen so far you have to see what your caster angle is and add shims to the front leaves to change your caster angle to get it back to stock or better. Don’t quote me on this haha but it’s one thing to look at. I’m still learning about it and hoping to address my jeeps steering problem with it. I’m sure I’ll eventually have a video about it too if it makes a difference. Good luck!

      I know it is sometime very fustrated my jeep was running like is supoust too and the stars to pull to the side to side. And when I made a turn and the jeep want to continiue strait it is weird and yes my yj has coils on it but caster is good and toe is also good i will continue to check more this weeken and will let you know! Tks to you i put my durango steering box ,keep up the awesome videos and yes i love them!

      The YJ struggle for safe highway driving lol. So far I just installed the cure and got an alignment. Im taking my jeep in to 4 wheel parts to finally see what's needed so i dont wander left and right on the highway. lol

    Thanks for the vid, My 92 yj steering box is about had it. Do you know if one from a 98/99 Dodge Dakota would also work?

  • @finchmeister08
    @finchmeister08 Před 6 lety

    when you say "steering was loose" do you mean there was no resistance to the steering when you would go to make turns? that's currently how mine drives, and i'm thinking it's the steering box.

    • @jtmoffroad
      @jtmoffroad  Před 6 lety +1

      I guess I meant more turning the steering wheel side to side and the movement never made it to the tires

    What do you mean by slop?

  • @zomblake
    @zomblake Před 6 lety

    Nice video. Definitely has me interested in upgrading rather than replacing mine. Quick question - who makes that breaker bar you used to crack the pitman arm nut? I've never seen one like that. Thanks

      Thanks for watching! Sorry for the late response. It was actually my buddy’s that I borrowed. He thinks it’s a craftsman he bought like 15 years ago

    Did you have any problems with install ie things not lining up with the linkages or tie rods needing adjustments?

    • @jtmoffroad
      @jtmoffroad  Před 6 lety

      Only thing that needed adjusted was the link that attaches to the pitman arm. I didn’t initially so it just meant the steering wheel was a bit off.

    • @SoggyCilantro
      @SoggyCilantro Před 6 lety +1

      jtmoffroad well my steering wheel is aftermarket so I can just take it off and straighten it up if my steering is fine

      jtmoffroad does it matter if it's a 4wd gear box or not the one I ordered just said 99 Durango

    • @jtmoffroad
      @jtmoffroad  Před 6 lety +1

      Hmm I’m not exactly sure. The one I got said it was 4wd. The part number for the one I got from advance auto is 27-7588 hope this helps!

    • @SoggyCilantro
      @SoggyCilantro Před 6 lety +1

      jtmoffroad ok cool that's the same part number they have listed so there might not be a difference 2wd or 4wd thanks for the reply

    are you happy with the new box on the trail? did you notice it takes more turns lock to lock ?

    • @jtmoffroad
      @jtmoffroad  Před 6 lety

      I couldn’t notice any big differences with the swap. My old box was worn out so just a new box in general was an improvement but I can’t say I noticed any more turns. I could just be used to it though

    Hey dude I know this is an older video, check out your castor angle though. I'm having a whole world of steering issues right now and the shims from 4xdiy seemed to help a lot.

    • @jtmoffroad
      @jtmoffroad  Před 6 lety +1

      It’s funny you say that cause a little while ago I started finding out about castor. I bought an angle finder but got caught up with other stuff and didn’t look to see how much I need to adjust with shims yet. I’ll def get a video of me doing that when I do
