  • At the turn of the 20th century, a castle stood high in South Freeport, Maine. It was called Casco Castle, a summer resort that burned down a decade after it was built. However, pieces of the old castle still remain in the neighborhood where it was built. Katie Bavoso explores the story in Maine Mysteries.

    Good video and thumbs up!
My grandparents lived less than 1 mile from the old castle tower back in the 1970's. We could see it clearly from their backyard. I remember back in 1976 or 1977 my brothers and I (all under 18) trekked through the woods until we arrived at the "castle" tower. If there were any "no trespassing" signs at that time we didn't pay attention or ignored them (we were kids). My memory may be cloudy, but I remember that the inside of the tower was filled with burned out rubble and there was really nothing to see or do here. There was absolutely no way to climb to the top. Big disappointment! So, if my memory is correct then there really isn't any reason to visit it. That's probably why they don't want people trying to access the tower. It's just a burned out building that should probably be knocked down.

My great grandfather, John J. Turner, was a superintendent and landscape architect at Casco Castle from 1902 through 1911. He left behind an extensive collection of photos, newspaper clippings and post cards that the Freeport Historical Society has copies of. I have posted much of the material having to do with Casco Castle in the Facebook group, "Old Pictures of Forgotten Maine."

Why are people crying because it is private property, if it has always been.
