  • There is no other motorway out there that's anything like the Aston Expressway, a 7 lane tidal flow monster! Genius idea or a silly one?

    Seems like an interesting idea - wouldn’t be much fun if the power went on the gantries though! 😜

    The central lane is also notable for being completely prohibited at all times for motor cycles. This is due to the drainage in the centre of the 7-lane section which can cause very nasty gyrations to such vehicles.

    Soon this’ll become a new convoluted style of smart motorway and we’ll see it all up the M25 and the M1

    I used to go to school right next to the Aston Distressway (as it was referred to) and walked from the bus stop to school with both the Ansells Brewery at Aston Cross and the HP Sauce factory. The mixture of the smells of the brewery, the HP Sauce factory and the Distressway was quite something at 8am... Thanks for the videos Jen, I'm catching up on them slowly (yes, I am a recent subscriber post Geoff video!)

    Perhaps the first smart motorway. The tidal flow is a clever way to fit that amount of traffic in without making the road wider. With the city already being there I suppose this has some justification, but I think that these ideas to cram more traffic into the same width on more recent smart motorways (such as the near by M42) is going too far. This road has a 50 mph speed limit for safety, and I wonder is 60mph is too fast for hard shoulder running.

    Is the outside lane only for motorbikes even if the green arrow is above it?

    Do M61?

    So the A38(M) Aston Expressway has no hard shoulder but has a red painted lane in the middle in case of a emergency or traffic building up from the M6 spaghetti interchange. Quite a strange motorway in Birmingham.

      T H E F L I P P E D P A C E R it isnt great if youre on the side with the lane drop. Traffic going out of the city in the morning is down to 1 lane until after j1 and 4 lanes are crammed into two going in on the evening. It genuinely flows better when they leave it as 3 in 3 out. It needs 4 lanes both sides really but the bridge is too narrow.

    Is it not dangerous though with no central reservation ? Is it still up to 70mph ?

  • @Glenn1967ful
    @Glenn1967ful Před 10 měsíci

    The lack of a central reservation is dangerous as a vehicle with a puncture could veer across a lane into oncoming traffic or someone could go into the wrong lane and be hit by an oncoming vehicle. I much prefer my motorways with central reservations thankyou.
