I went to the Grand Old Opry in 2009 and saw Jack Greene sing this song...;. He was no spring chicken and he sang this song without a mistake and with that same strong voice he's always had AND HE GAVE THIS OL BOY GOOSEBUMPS ON TOP OF GOOSEBUMPS!! A performance I will NEVER forget...
From Ireland here, I’ve only come across Jack Greene in the last few months from listening to US country station HPR. What a singer sounds one of the best I’ve ever heard. I’m 66 love US real country music not the modern so called country. Watching and listening to Jack here in 2008 he is not miming a or reading, he sounds as good as ever and to think he died just five years after this. RIP to a great singer
Oh yeah he was like a fine wine that stood the test of time. I've heard Ricky Van Shelton with his version then both together on a Ralph Emery show, wow that's a pure gold memory.
@ Cindy Koeppel. YES, saw that also w RVS. 💖💖💖 IT. WHEN RVS Pulled JACK closer to himself near the End of the Song.... Just made it more Special ! Be Blessed.
I walked into a coffee shop ine night in Galesburg, Illinois and found my Dad having coffee with Jack Greene, like it was no big deal. My Dad knew everybody in the world it seemed
Jack Greene sounded awesome for his age at that time! He was truly one of the early country music icons that probably never got the credit he deserved. Every time I hear that powerful song it sends chills down my spine. And think about how many of us can relate to that song at least once in our life.
And there are a LOT OF PEOPLE who think that Ricky Van Shelton was the ORIGINAL PERFORMER of this song. NOBODY does it better than Jack Greene. May he rest in ETERNAL PEACE. This was done in 2008. He passed away 5 years later from Alzheimer's which is relatively quick for an Alzheimer's patient.
Jack Greene belongs in the Country Music Hall of Fame, without question! The first winner of CMA Male Vocalist of the Year and numerous other career highlights! This is a great video and was a great show. Those of us trying to make a living in this business owe a lot to all of these guys! Jack Greene is a dear friend of mine and I spent the afternoon with him and LeeAnn Thursday. What a great man!
My son-in-law Eddie Weidow (who now plays with Ronnie McDowell) played with Jack for years. Jack was there best man so I got to know him personally and not only was Jack a great singer he was a great man and is missed. RIP my friend.
I absolutely love hearing Jack Greene sing this song. He's just so genuine, and seems like such a really good person. So sorry he's not here to sing many more.
When George Jones recorded "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes", Jack was one of them shoes he was singing about. Only one Jolly Green Giant, that's Jack Greene
I had the honor of getting to sit next to Mr Jack Greene and his manager on a dinner cruise in Hawaii a little over a year ago. Lets just say, its a shame more people didn't know who he was.
I accidentally stumbled across the CMA's., I can't even imagine that they are in the same Genre as Jack Greene ... there's more talent, passion and music here than that entire show. And I'm just talking about the one singing - not the others in the room.
My mother was a country singer/ songwriter and when I was a kid she would make me go with her to Opry houses around Texas. One night when I was about 11 years old after a show we had dinner with Jack Greene in Mesquite Texas. I remember him being such a nice and amazing guy. I didn’t know how lucky I was to get to talk to him and shake his hand. But I sure do now.
I was knee -high to a grass hopper when I watched this man sing this song.My parents took me and my Family to Music Park in Anderson,Indiana.Skeeter Davis performed after the Jolly Greene Giant.BOTH will live in my memories forever.
I cried like a baby this morning I have loved Jack Greene all my life. What a wonderful voice no one could touch him. Although I never meet him. I have every thing he ever recorded. RIP Jack.
the song never dies-just the singer- love has no beginning and no end- it's a circle we came from and will go to -where all those great voices will still be heard and we join in-maybe flying on the wings of a dove0[ferlin] or the old violin strings- [johnny]- hank will be there on a midnight train-roy--gene autry-now george J. gets his choices-ain't we got fun-spreading the love to the humans on that planet !!
Rest in Perfect Peace Mr. Greene. In 1979 I was 14 yrs old. We lived in Dayton Ohio. I loved this song, but had only heard it on the radio. I never saw Jack sing it. We went to the Grand Ole Opry on our family vacation and we're able to go backstage. My sister and I had our picture taken with Jack. Later, I heard the song being sung but we were on Roy Acuff's dressing room, so I still couldn't put a face to the song. Recently while watching Country's Family Reunion I saw this same video. I was both shocked and excited, I not only can put his face with this song, but I also have the picture with him, my little sister and myself. Awesome song. Awesome talented man. They don't make them like Jack and Stonewall and Roy- Acuff and Clark. Billy Walker and the lovely Miss Patty Page anymore.
A dear man and a great friend of ours thru the years. So missed, Patti even has a tear in her eyes, it was hard to see his health to go, I cried the last time I got to see him in 2004. Bless him
What a great song!!! I've listened to it soooo many times. His voice was just as beautiful at this age as it was as a young man, maybe even more so. Wish he were still around to bless us with more wonderful music!!!!
@@lizwilkes3488 I agree with you and everyone else who watches this video more than 2 or 3 times. I have watched it 2 or 3 times in a row for the last several months. I would be willing to bet that 98% of the men in this country have been this STATUE OF A FOOL at least once in their lives!!
It was truly an honor to have received an email from Jack a few years ago . He thanked us for playing the musc of the pioneers of country on our Classic Country internet radio station. R.I.P Jack
Yes I love his song and his music he has a great voice. Yes the song there goes my every thing was song at my late husband funeral he was my every thing. Thank for your great song and your voice ❤
Can't believe it's been a week and there have been no more posts about how great this song is. Every time I need to hear a great song, I come to this site.
Just wanted to post this. I have listened to this song, only by Jack Greene, often over the years. I'm 78 now but at the time I first heard this song I was 28 and in a huge club called Randy's Rodeo. My soon to be ex husband was playing there that night and I was there dancing with every one I could. When my ex started talking on the mic he said words to this effect. "This next song is dedicated to my soon to be ex wife. I hope she is paying attention." He played Statue of a Fool. It broke my heart. I never realized he cared that much. We had married so young. I met him when I was 15 and we married when I was 17. We had two beautiful sons. But when we split it was because he wanted to date as according to him he had never known any other girls. I told him "no we are married, if you want to date we have to get a divorce". So we did. By the time I heard him play that song and sing it to me I was having what I thought was the time of my life. Long story short, I'm 78 now and I really regret losing him. He will always be my best friend if not my husband.
Jack was a drummer in his beginning with Ray Price. Hank Williams Sr. begat Ray Price who begat Willie Nelson and Johnny Bush and then Jack Greene then Darell McCall then Johnny Paycheck. Lots of talent in Ray's band.
Very, very few left now, in late 2018. Country and Western music no longer exists. I'm not exactly sure what it is coming from Nashville these days, but it's not country and shouldn't be called Country.
A real 'Jewel' of a song made famous during the 'baby boomer' years of the 50's & 60's ~ brings back so many good memories PLUS the nostalgia of people known & loves lost~! Thanks for posting~!
I passed by Jack's old home in Maryville today, it looked awfully lonesome. My cousin attended High School with him, Everett High in Maryville Tn. Teriffic Singer.
BROTHER TRUTH I knew Jack for years and he was the sweetest man ever, my late husband was a dear friend of his, I could cry each time I listen to this. I miss him dearly.
While I agree with you to an extent. IN Augusta Ga there were 3 young men that did it justice. Carrol Mathews, Bill Findley and Johnny Clarke. Johnny was the only one to leave town and perform on the Grand Ole Opry. Rickey Van Shelton recorded Johnny and Bill s version of Statue. Johnny always said he copied Bill Findley' s versionj. When these guys moved on because of talent. And the fantastic Radio Manager and Promoter passed away, In Augusta Ga., the music died.
I agree this is what Country Music should be like, R.I.P. Jack Greene, and Patti Page, Saw her on this video too,
I went to the Grand Old Opry in 2009 and saw Jack Greene sing this song...;. He was no spring chicken and he sang this song without a mistake and with that same strong voice he's always had AND HE GAVE THIS OL BOY GOOSEBUMPS ON TOP OF GOOSEBUMPS!! A performance I will NEVER forget...

I heard Jack in concert with Loretta Lynn, Connie Smith and others I Gaithersburg, MD at least 35 to 40 yrs ago. What a concert. they were all great.
It's not easy swallowing the lump in my throat......Jack Greene was a great talent .
He was great singer we don't have music like that now.

Country music at its finest ladies and gentleman. We are losing so many of our heros
What a great voice, what a great song, what a legend!
RIP Jack
What a voice. Didn’t know the man but met him a time or two. Highly respected and genuinely liked within the business by those who knew him.
You know you had to have sung something special to get a standing ovation from this crowd.
I am not ashamed to admit, I get a tear every time I
hear this.
Me 2 . .. me 2... I can definitely relate to this tune .
rrios283s73 Me too. Check out the video from 1989 with Jack and Ricky Van Shelton performing this on Nashvill Now. It gave me goosebumps.
Every time. ❤

One of the great ballad singers of all time. No country artist today comes close with the crappy “Bro” country music of today.

What's your mom's name and what year was this? Did your mom re cord anything? You Tube is full of good unnamed singers that should be recognized.
