@Saul Gland honestly though why compare two songs with two different meanings? Lennon's version was, in my opinion, more of the ideal world, a world where people don't need to be afraid of what they are and where there is unity and love among all of us.
Ari's version spoke something personal and deep within her. Of her wish to have a normal relationship without the constant influence and intervention of media. She is literally imagining what kind of life it would be--the life that she wants with her lover--if everything was just chill and there was no pressure.
Two different songs with two different meanings. Remember that.

Admit it or not, this performance surely goes down in music history, just like what Mariah did every time she hits whistle notes perfectly. Mariah loves Ari because aside from seeing the potential in her, they both went through their own consecutive struggles in life, yet has still managed to shine, even brighter.
Protect them both and appreciate their music at all costs while we still have them.

3 years later, and this is STILL and forever will be my favorite live performance of Ari! I love her vocals and although you can tell how hard this was to sing for her, she stood strong and sang her heart out. That's what I love about her
The fact she was hurting so so bad and gave us this 🥺 so grateful for her, it brought a tear to my eye watching this back knowing where she’s at now and where she was here. So glad she found her peace and happiness, she deserves it 🤍

I always come back to this live performance, because even though I love the studio version and I'm not a big fan of the arrangement here (no shade to the Roots though), I love what Ariana does while the song goes out. The original just has her ambiently speak the final "imagine" parts, while here she belts it out with the peppy horn and sax as a background, like it's building up to something, but the last "imagine" almost like the song is cut, like a desperate plea. It's so abrupt, and sad, and amazing.

I was never an Ariana fan before, although I always thought she had a pretty voice. I rarely watch the jimmy Fallon show but just so happened to be the night this originally aired and when he annonced she was about to perform I was about to change the channel and then she started singing and I was glued to the tv! I had tears in my eyes by the end of it. What a beautiful voice and those whistle notes were amazing. I’ve been a fan ever since. So sad all she’s been through.
