    The subtle distortion reminds me of your first solo album „Guitarland“. There are melodies which have a clean tone but then passages with a light crunch depending on the volume level and the attack on the strings. Still a masterpiece for superb guitar tones and great melodies after all these years since its release. I am so grateful for all these tutorial videos and sound examples. Greetings from Germany

    Hearing the backing track to “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” choked me up a bit. I was a junior in high school when The Allmans’ “Live At The Fillmore” came out. Reminds me of a custom pedal I own, it’s a dual pedal with a boutique clone of the the Boss OD-1 with a sourced 14 pin chip. Going into it is the guts of a 1978-79 MXR Dynacomp compressor with all the Ross compressor pedal mods. I can dial back the gain of the od-1, to make it a cleanish boost - and I cam compress my signal before it hits the od-1 part of the pedal. Because of the availability of gain on tap - I can get dead nuts Angus Young tones.

    Wait - I see what you did there! Elizabeth Reed, Paul Reed Smith!
    The only downside is the size - “In a world of smaller pedals” (deep movie trailer voice), this seems like it might be popular for studios and bedroom players but not so much for those with limited pedalboard real estate.

    Optical compressors in general are typically more subtle than FET compressors, but they each have their own sound and feel. FET-style compressors add a nice "spank" and sparkle to your clean tone, especially if you're using single coils. However, an optical compressor works brilliantly as an always-on pedal.

    Great video as always Tim.. ive found myself using clean boost, compression and even a boss EQ pedal instead of drive pedals more and more lately, I love the way you can push the amp just into break up. My favorite is the TC electronic spark pedal with clean, fate or mid boost, such a great pedal for such little money. I'd love to try the PRS pedal, but they dont come cheap.

    • @jfar3340
      @jfar3340 Před rokem

      you don't push the amp into breakup with a pedal that's a fallacy, you just add transistor/solid state circuit into the chain, or if you're pushing ''the front end'' with a boost without drastically increasing the volume then you're just adding preamp gain, which IMO defeats the purpose of most classic tube amp breakup characteristics (we talk about 6V6, 6L6, EL84 etc amps, not 12AT7 amps, and that's for a reason). The only way to organically push an amp into breakup is to turn up the amp volume. Anyway breakup is overrated.
      All these drive, boost etc pedals sound the same...

    I do the same thing with my Marshall DSL100HR head using a db boost pedal by Caline. It tends to not distort the amp, it just waked it up a bit and giving the notes a bit more sustain. Then I also use just a small compressor pedal by Afuaim that really brings life to leads.

    Optical compression is really good for guitar the LA3 and LA4 were very popular solid state optical compressors for tracking guitars. I personally use a more aggressive compression on my live guitar setup, just to get that hard chicken-pickin attack with a rack ART PWM compressor called the ART dual limiter. But in the studio I have always leaned more toward optical compressors. So this might be a very good investment for me. Good thing my best friend is a PRS dealer!! LOL!

  • @neal_laugman
    @neal_laugman Před rokem

    Most of the fancier compressors for guitars are modeled (so they say) after an 1176 whereas this is modeled after an LA-2A. The magic of these is you can put them on virtually anything (maybe not death metal) and it will sound better. Mix engineers always want them somewhere in a vocal chain. Mastering engineers find use of this one, too. This pedal is not going to behave as a limiter, but just as Tim has shown, can be left on all he time and it will especially do wonderful things with lower distortion signals. I had forgotten that Tim had done a review on this one - d*mn him ... he has given me a case of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) so now I'll have to go score one of these. Gee, thanks my friend!
