Before you sell your gaming items, DVDs, and Blu-rays to HPB, there's something important you should know. I love shopping there and have found many great bargains over the years, but I've discovered something very disturbing and wasteful.

That's pretty sad. The HPB on Hulen, whenever I went in there, their buying desk was always covered in books and various media and I actually thought if they had too much stuff, they did donate overstock to charity if they're so "green". Obviously not.
You make a great point about putting on library carts at marked down prices. Makes more sense but good sense doesn't always prevail.
They used to separate what they were buying versus what I could take back with me. They stopped this practice a few years ago.
The prices I've seen for games at Half-Price Books are more like 'Full Price Games' which is too bad :/
Yeah, I live in East Texas and the stores I've been to either have crappy (low reviewed) games at a crazy price or no games at all.
I think in the last three years their management has changed. If not the people, than for sure the way the corporation is run.
All those books and dvds that now go into the dumpster, used to go to bulk book sales (mine was at the state fair grounds.)
They used to do semi-monthly coupons in their email too. Those are long gone. HPB feels like its turning into a Gamestop.
Ugh that’s sickening to hear and so wasteful. Thanks for bringing this into light Brett. Maybe HPB will see this and pull their heads out their butts.
This is scandelous. Hopefully ur video will shine a light on this. I used to love my local second store until they started a huge dirty magazine section.
Oh so many things I could say here but that would require a whole new video. I will point out that the blue dumpster you showed filled with books is actually supposed to be a recycling dumpster which is why it is full of books. Despite the fact that the dumpsters are considered private property and they can call the police on you, when I worked there we were told by corporate not to engage with dumpster divers. Period. The reason some of the stores get bent out of shape is because people will bring stuff around from the dumpsters and try to sell it again. I will say that the pandemic took its toll on HPB. They let go about 80% of their employees and now staff their stores at about half of what they used to. Unfortunately they now price items so high that I imagine their shelf turnover is much slower these days. Perhaps if they went back to their pre-Covid way of doing business by reducing their prices and turning their inventory over faster they might not have the need to dump so much merchandise.

You can actually buy any like-new and new conditioned items from them for CHEAP when they’re about to throw them away. You have to talk with the manager and you can get them for about a .25 per item and they’ll be happy to set them aside for you to make more money on free items they would have thrown away regardless. You just have to be able to put in the work just know you can’t pick and choose. You have to take the lot. Similar to what they do. It’s great for resellers starting out or anyone looking to fill a shelf.
I worked there about 3 years ago. I can confirm we did chuck out books if they were heavily damaged, but I don't recall us ever throwing away DVDs or games. Seeing this...I'm glad I don't work there anymore. (Nevermind the fact that I just wasn't a great fit for the company culture and the pay obviously wasn't great. That said, it was worth it just to sell a copy of Bubsy: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind to some young hipster LOL)
I brought them a Funko Pop they sell for $125 (they had another one in store) and they offered me $10. It's one thing to low-ball, but this was just insulting.
It’s a business. You could have easily listed your item on eBay for the same $125 and waited for a customer. Or you could sell the item for what they’re willing to pay so they could make a profit. It isn’t just money in the owners pocket. That item probably only brought $10 to the owner while the rest went into the business, building, employees, insurance and utilities, material…etc. It wasn’t a low-ball offer.
Arent they supposed to recycle them? I would hear them say that. Makes no sense why would claim to be green if they arent going to recycle that.
Late reply but some of the stores are in locations where they can recycle books specifically, others exist in municipalities where that isn't an option so they just throw them away.
With the housing crisis people can't take stuff even if its free. I would just take stuff from the dumpster and tell security that you are throwing away boxes when they ask. This sort of thing is why they hide the dumpsters often but I can sort of see their point with wasting the employees time looking after an area that barely generates a profit or you put them out for free and those sidehustle nobs will make a mess trying to find valuable stuff to flip. I think they should sell stuff in bulk like 200 random dvd's for $50, how much fun would that be to look through.
Sounds like they're just trying to engineer scarcity for common products. It's not illegal, per se, but you're right, it's a dick move.

Hmm it’s weird they wouldn’t give them away so say Goodwill or Salvation Army. Which area are you in?
Harwood HPB in Bedford has a charity thrift store in the same parking lot.
@@BrettWeissRetroGamer I do hunt around for boxes at times behind shopping centers. Now you got me curious if they dump them in Plano. You are so right about high prices, think they gauge everything around ebay now. At least they present it well.

Most of the books and media that get thrown away are filthy, of a quality that no human would ever want to read, or so outdated or antiquated that it's genuinely for the best to just recycle them (at least in the case of books, DVDs and games are a different question)
