    My Cocker has Anxiety and groomers have such a hard time with him. I decided to try grooming him myself using your instructions. It took me hours to groom him, but I'm glad I did. He had mats in his paws and ears. I would have never known how difficult it is to cut with mats or how painful it is for the doggy. I appreciate the experience because it was bonding and it made me more aware of his grooming needs. Thank you for empowering pet parents.

I enjoy hearing the praise you have for this breed because around here (central Pennsylvania) Breeders have ruined the cocker spaniel by bad breeding resulting in an abundance of health, temperament and incorrect confirmation problems. Where are you located? I would love to do a special episode on this breed?

      Hi Tracy. I'm a dog groomer but I'm not associated with this channel: please take the following as just my own experince, not representative of this channel.
      There's a few reasons a groomer might say a dog is 'too old' for this or that aspect of grooming, but usually it would be a case of 'well, we will prioritise comfort over aesthetics because of health issues (eg, stiff joints)' or 'we might have to do half the groom one day and the rest of the groom a couple of days later so we're not pushing the dog too hard'. If it's a large double-coated dog, for example, they might not be able to stand up long enough to be brushed out after having endured the bath and blow dry; or for a small or medium dog who gets their body clippered, the groomer might have felt that it isn't possible to lift and manipulate their legs safely and comfortably, or might have identified a few specific health issues that would be better handled by a vet.
      In any of these cases though, the groomer ought to have communicated their specific concerns to you, and they should be clear about what they can and cannot do with this dog and why. If there are health issues that a vet needs to deal with, or behavioural concerns that the owner can work on, the groomer ought to make those very clear.
      I have occasionally recommended a senior dog be groomed at a salon attached to a vet, when I'm worried about heart or epilepsy or seizures, so that there can be a vet nurse and vet ready to hand in the case of emergency. But usually I prefer to talk to the owner about the dog's individual health needs and how I (since I already have a positive relationship with the dog!) can work to accommodate those issues within the groom - even if it means the groom isn't perfect from the point of view of professional pride. Comfort and happiness are the most important things for older doggos!

I have groomed myself, but I've never felt comfortable with the underneath, legs, or feet. I had no problem with the back, butt, head, and ears. I also felt like I didn't have the necessary tools. I'd like to start grooming my girl, Harley, myself. I no longer have any tools, but plan to start purchasing. I'm looking forward to learning from you!

    Wow, I have been watching one after another in how to groom my two Cocker Spaniels both are Buff and from the same awesome Cocker Spaniel Kennel in Montana. I have been grooming my Cocker Spaniels before this year, but it was pretty easy due to skin issues etc. it was basically a 10 blade all over. My two girls now are 22 weeks and 11 weeks and I need some help so here I am. The Breeder that I was lucky enough to find, shows Cocker Spaniels and starts grooming them at 8 weeks old. I'm taking your video's one at a time and trying my lucky at grooming Cassie the older of the two. I seem to have a problem with getting the face trimmed right as I want her eye lashes but afraid of being too close with the rest of her face especially coming down between the eyes and trimming under the eyes. She is still teething, so she has the runny eyes, and everything keeps gathering below the eye and nose no matter how many times I wipe her eyes daily. Do you have an email I could send you a few pictures of what I am talking about? She is a beautiful Cocker Spaniel and the only one of the litter that no one wanted for a show dog because of her being petite all over. I love her she is so regal just raising her head and looking at you with those dark brown eyes. I would love any feedback you could give me on grooming her and her little sister (not really blood line wise but from same Kennel) who needs to be started on grooming. Thank you for your time. Reaching out to you from "God's Little Half Acre" in SE Washington. (The High Desert not green and rainy like the commercials for Washington advertise. 🙂

      Great question:) I wash, brush and fluffy dry most every dog breed before any clipper work. It removes all dander, dead coat and grime from the skin and coat to produce better, smooth-clipper work as well as precise scissor finish work. I use a hair vac system so hair clippings are collected when clipping but if I didn't use that system, the dogs shake immediately upon grooming completion which rids the coat of the tiny hair fragments. I've groomed dogs for many years with and without a hair vac system and this has always been my procedure to produce a professional look. Tip: you can also turn a force dryer on low and whisk away hair clippings at the end of the grooming session too:) Hope this helps❤️

    Just curious, why do you use the snap on combs as opposed to say a 3F or 4F, etc... I currently have an Oster A5 Turbo clipper (which I hate) but on Wednesday I have the Wahl KM10 coming! I’m holding off on grooming my two Havanese girls till then. The blades I own are 40, 30, 10, 3F and 4F. I also have a couple of sets of snap on combs but they are the plastic ones, not stainless.

      Congrats on getting the Wahl KM 10...You will love it:) You can use a 3F or 4F on the head instead of the snap on combs. I think the length is too short for the head that''s why I prefer the snap on combs...they leave more length and I like the way they cut:)It is a personal preference though my friend. Happy Trimming on Wednesday:)

    Hello! I just had a quick question…in the video you use straight scissors to trim the paws (I have the same brand scissors as you…love them!). The breeder we purchased Mac from advised us to use curved scissors (again I have these in the same brand)…what are your thoughts on this??? Many thanks to you and your wonderful videos.

      You can perform the same work with a straight shear. Curved is easier if you are not used to using shears around the feet.

    Hi, just found this video. i have a cocka/Jack, she has a very simular coat to this spaniel, she's 14mnths old. she is groomed by a groomer regularly but she has the crest on her head, doesn't look like a spaniels and it always sticks up. I'm scared to cut her myself. I don't know what to do with her crest, it just looks awful. any advice would be much appreciated.
    Think i might try to cut heryself at some point. Thank you for this video x

    You used a 7f for the back. What blade would I use with a Wahl Arco clipper?

    • @GoGroomer
      @GoGroomer  Před 4 lety

      You could use the 10 blade setting but I feel that is too short. That is the longest setting on the arco.

    Looks beautiful! I just got my fist cocker from my mom and can't wait to groom him. How does the sanitation cut work for males to keep his fur clean from urine while maintaining the tuck up? Or is the tuck up sacrificed a bit when it pertains to the male sanitary cut? This is my fist dog that will need extensive grooming like this. All my past dogs have been short hair so this is a new one for me

    I owned a black cocker spaniel for nearly 16 years, and she always had skin issues - even when professionally groomed. I'm getting another pup next week and would like to groom her myself. At what age should I start? Should I start her with a professional first so that if I chicken out, she has a higher sense of comfort with a stranger? Also, what tools should I purchase; I already own a grooming arm. Thanks so much. I would love to be able to do the grooming myself this time around.

    How do you groom ears in a Cocker who may be prone to infections? Just got a Cocker rescue, and his poor ears are so inflamed and yeasty. Going to the vet and I body clipped him because he was pretty solid matting. But for future grooming?

    • @GoGroomer
      @GoGroomer  Před 3 lety +1

      shave the inside of the ear as show in this video with a #10 blade and clean the ears every week with a pet safe, gentle ear cleaner and cotton ball. When you bath your dog put cotton balls in the ear hole to prevent water from entering the ear. This should help tremendously.

    • @FlickiChicki
      @FlickiChicki Před 3 lety

      @@GoGroomer thanks! I didn't clip in the ears as much, too nervous and he's too tender, but I did carefully shave the ear leather down. I figure the two of us can work on getting his ears clean once this round of infection is cleared up.

    Aren’t coat kings super bad for the coat? Essentially cutting through the coat rather than pulling out loose under coat from the root? I’m so surprised to see you recommend one.
