  • This is a walk through on how I create the carcasses for my kitchen cabinets. The example shown in this video is for a cabinet that will be in my island. The next video will show how I make the beaded inset face frames.

How is the Openbuilds 1515 working out for your cabinets? I'm planning on doing the same thing. Anything you would do differently?

It works well. Are you doing a full kitchen? It does take a long time to make all of it. Took longer than I expected. That’s my only warning. Building around 30 pieces (cabinets) of furniture is a tall order. The precision gained by using a CNC is huge. I manually made my corner cabinet that didn’t follow my standardized design and it’s assembly wasn’t as perfect as the CNCed ones. You could speed up your process up a little if you cut the backings (simple cuts w/o dados) on a table saw. I ended up doing this towards the end of my kitchen project. I started off where every cut was on the cnc.

@@homehackshowtos Yes, would be doing the full kitchen. How long did your kitchen take? Did machine speed hinder you?
What took the longest? Anything you'd do differently?

I did beaded inset cabinets. The beaded face frame took some time. Overall spent 3 months doing it at night after my kids went to bed. Didnt really start working hard on it until the last month. Each cabinet carcass takes about 40 min to cut on the cnc. During that time you can cut the back and stretchers, etc on a table saw. Installing all the drawers took a few nights. I made about 30 cabinet doors over one weekend. I painted them all and during the next week and would install them in waves. I made some 3D printed jigs that helped with drilling the hinge holes in the face frame. Doing it over again I would do more of the simple cuts on the table saw and use the cnc for cutting pieces with a lot of dados. The cnc really shined with pieces that included dados.

@@homehackshowtos Good to know! We hadn't considered those, we were thinking Euro style cabinets. Also hoping to leverage Mozaik software to get gcode for all of the slides and hinge holes.
Love that you wrote your own little app though. I write software too and I hadn't really considered it.

@@bannthis thanks. Feel free to use my app. You can also see the JavaScript in chrome through developer mode so you can call parts of it if you’d like. Let me know how mozaik goes. I think I saw that on some forum I should have checked it out more.
