Reporters trying to ID jurors complaining about 1st amendment violations are disgusting. Where's your intrepid investigative spirit been for the last 8 years? Now when it comes time to put private citizens in jeopardy you're complaining about not being able to do it? Gross.
Also, I'm fairly sure that it's legal for the state to maintain juror anonymity, so I don't know how much of an abuse of the first amendment this actually is....
Also, outside of this weird circus, were these same media groups posting people's personal information without their permission, especially if they're not people that are normally in the public eye or that have public persona, can have some potential legal repercussions.
Those complaining about a 1st Amendment violation may not be considering at all the 5th Amendment. You know, the one about due process of the law (juror intimidation being a violation of such).
Media reverting to its same idiot tendencies.
@@GildedmuseExactly. How do they think it would go down if it was a mobster on trial and they were doxxing the jury like this? Still blathering about 1st amendment rights then? But the danger to jurors is real in Don-"fight like hell or you won't have a country any more"- the- Con's case.
In addition, major MAGA social media figures make posts asking people to do their "patriotic duty" and infiltrate the jury on behalf of trump, so of course Fox starts spreading that "the liberals" are trying to do that exact thing. They're just so exhaustingly predictable with their projection.
I guess this guy would say it's morally high-handed, but how can you not fault people for voting for Trump after 1/6? That just seems to me the one thing that has gone utterly beyond the pale of American politics. In my view it put Trump beyond the pale. Once you got, "yes, but," you have morally compromised yourself.
You may not know this, but "beyond the pale" is a very racist term that depicts Irish people as non human savages. Please don't use it.
Trump at a bodega, “New Yorkers all love me!”
Trump in court, “New Yorkers all hate me!!”
I like the way he says “bodega” like it’s the first time he’s heard it. And he assumes the same of everyone else, like he’s teaching them hidden lore.
Hell, I’m an Australian, I’ve never been to the USA (well, not since I was a child) but I know what a bodega is.
Yup. Another scripted visit with the Young Republicans. Just like his pretend "auto workers union" rally. Smoke and mirrors
It was staged btw.

Doxxing jurors should result in jail time.
Absolutely. There are way too many dubbers with weapons and access to Google maps, and the belief that dear leader will reward them. I don't understand... If a "felon" can't vote, then how can a "felon" run for the presidency?
There's no law that says you have to be able to vote for yourself. They are separate.
@@darrahhopper6437 Yeah, but I have also never understood, how it is constitutional to deny any1 their vote, felon or not.

I live in SC, where open carry with no permit was just passed. It already feels like civil war in some places.
Same law in FL., now too. Thank God Biden closed the online and gun show loophole law! It will help in multiple ways and in other countries that are flooded with US weapons like the cartels have in Mexico for but one example.
The new law now requires them to be licensed which also means nobody can buy from them wo a background check.
Could you elaborate on what you mean by it already feels like civil war?
I live on a 30 acre lot with 5 families-2 are MAGA. When I had to call sheriff for next door neighbor, the neighbor and deputies humiliated me. My Black neighbor told the white deputies (I am white) how much I hated white people because my father did “he doesn’t know what to me”, told the cops I hated cops because of all the brutality. This neighbor told his wife he could have her raped by his 2 friends and her body hidden real easily! The other MAGA hung up posters with the middle finger up facing a 73 yo man’s house when the man got upset because the MAGA cut the older man’s tree down. These Southerners of all backgrounds are severely traumatized from centuries of Jim Crow. Look up Bamberg SC and Alan Thibodeau. I was terrified the deputies would find out about my CPTSD from the neighbor. And now it’s open carry with no permits! Trust me, the elites want war here! McMaster loves Trump! I don’t even say hi to people anymore because I can’t tell who might get pissed off.
My husband would be the perfect jury member. He consumes zero news. Just living life ignorantly blissfully. When people ask who he voted for, he says "I don't know. Whoever my wife wrote down for me."
I used to be that way. I've added a massive amount of stress by keeping up with politics and witnessing the largest cult in history form before my eyes.
My husband is like that to! I remain so jealous of his inner peace. He’s from California and it’s his nice , even keeled peaceful, graceful way he exists. I’m a mess. 🙏🏻🇺🇸⚖️💙🗽🩺🗳️
Being oblivious to news is not the mark of a good juror. Also sounds dishonest. I don't know who I voted for, never heard of Donald Trump ? He can't handle reality?
@@Dex2R7Same here. Prior to 2020, I felt I was too busy, too focused on grad school and then my babies, young children, to worry about the news. It was too upsetting, and I needed to be level for my kids. It's very stressful trying to "catch up" and realize all I've missed.

At the end of the day, Garland and the DOJ did Trump a HUGE favor by kicking the can down the road so much.
Agreed. Trump thought he could continuously get away with all of his various crimes and corruption to the point where he could legit get away with overthrowing the federal government and installing himself for a second term (and third, fourth, fifth, etc. just like Putin and Xi) against the will of the American people. He has to be stopped here and now in 2024.

They didn't do any favors for Trump ever. They tried doing a huge favor for Hunter, but got caught.
@@imrael496 choosing not to prosecute Trump until election season was a huge favor for Trump. It allows him to play the “political persecution” card even though his only argument is that he should be allowed to do crimes.

Fox is disgusting
ALL corporate-sponsored networks are corrupt.
I have decided that I'm not going to watch Civil War. That interview with Alex Garland was just infuriating. I probably agree with him on most things, but his idea that the left is failing to reach out to the center right is just stupid. Jon demonstrated this by talking about how there is now a literal Cheney that is openly advocating for Democratic politicians. We have come far enough that the Democratic party is now openly embracing figures like Liz Cheney and John McCain, a Republican presidential candidate not all that long ago, and we are somehow still not doing enough to give Republicans an out. It's just inane bullshit.
He's talking about England I think. They did a terrible job of clarifying that. Jon is a great speaker and fantastic writer, but he's not a great interviewer. Either he didn't ask or it was edited out, and neither is acceptable.
Umm. Alex Garland is from the UK 🇬🇧. They got rid of their crazy Right-wingers. Remember Boris Johnson and Theresa May?
Okay - I hope they were talking about the UK, because I had the same reaction as the previous poster (eriktorgler) I found Alex very “No sh!t Sherlock”. We’re already doing all of that. Where have you been for the last year few years - if I had a dollar for every ounce of energy expended by the center, and the left on trying to understand and accommodate the right (at least the maga right) I’d be ‘Elon Musk rich’ by now!
It was like he was visiting us from the recent past with what he thought was a “hot take”, so yeah I really do hope he was talking about Britain 🤷🏻♀️
I agree. I think that director was very pretentious and infuriating. There is "an air" that "centrists" give off, this self-delusion that they are somehow above both sides.
I also agree about this "the left needs to stop "demonizing the right" thing is ridiculous.
You mentioned several of the right that have broken with the party. My example is Cindy McCain. She is the widow of a Republican candidate for president and she endorsed the now Democratic presidential candidate in Biden, who was part of the ticket that defeated her late husband.
I think that shows how far the "right" and Donald Trump have gone. Now factor in that she made that endorsement BEFORE January 6th even happened, and ALL the other criminal cases.
And this idiot wants to bring up the "basket of deplorables" comment from like 8 years ago? WTF? 🤨

Haven't listened to the whole interview, signing off now, but sounds like he categorizes things as either centrist or extreme. As a progressive, i see him as a problem.
I get that, but you should listen to the rest of the interview. Because while that *is* a legitimate take on what he's saying, he also points out more nuance and does speak about some of his own more "partisan" viewpoints.
@Berry_N I tend to agree. It’s almost as if he’s saying that just the MAGA right-winger is a problem, but the John McCain or Mitt Romney flavor of right wing politics is ok. And while I do appreciate that those politicians are at least non-violent and open to more rational legislation and reaching across the aisle, that doesn’t change the fact that I believe their views are objectively immoral. Violent or not, I’m not sure conservatism has anything that could be construed as what’s best for the majority of people.

Any 'news' agency that discusses jurors information should have their FCC license pulled.
And we shouldn't have to wait three years for it to happen.

Excellent discussion with Alex Garland about his film "Civil War." What an intelligent and reasonable person. He provided a thoughtful perspective. So much to think about. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
Plus the fact that it hit to the heart about his son entering the military this year! Not wanting to be responsible for possible war because of not acting in aiding Ukraine!
Maybe Trump was talking about Kari Lake when he said they keep gagging him.
Any sentence that uses the words "Kari Lake" and "Strap On" has to make most people spit up their cofvee.
It doesn’t sound fake to me. The only media source that juror listed that I never consult is Fox, and I am a progressive voter. I think it’s important to remember that some people want to understand how the other half thinks and intentionally expose themselves to varied sources.
I see at least one Fox report on every significant event to see what propaganda spin they put on it, however a lot of things that happen that Fox viewers should be told about, never get to air.

What you actually want is not to ensure that power is switching regularly, you want electoral reform so that minority voices can actually be represented at all times
Well said 👏👏👏
You absolutely can make an ethical judgement based on someone's vote.
Voters aren't children; they should be capable of changing their mind from what they grew up with.
Yeah, it kind of comes off as a weird statement. Like.... what about the people that voted for Strom Thurmond, Robert Byrd or David Duke? AFTER learning about their relationship with the KKK? Cause it feels like maybe being a member of the KKK, even if they're "no longer active", should come with something of a moral judgement?
And why shouldn't I judge someone if they voted against abortion rights and equal access to healthcare for Americans regardless of gender? If I'm not supposed to judge someone based on actions - such as the action of voting against women's rights - then what should I judge them on?
I think a major mistake being made here is the automatic assumption that to judge someone is inherently negative, both in connotation of how we're viewing the other person (we rarely say we're judging someone to mean they're making a positive impression) but also as a moral judgement. He doesn't go so far as to suggest all judgement is bad - he quickly clarifies his own point by adding that it's fine to judge someone for being racist, just not, apparently, for JUDGING someone who is racist and who promotes racist policies. Even though a lot of racism we pick up is unconsciously taught to us by the larger overall culture recycling and passing along bigoted ideas and tropes which we then adopt or stay hidden in the back of our brains as these subconscious prejudices we remain entirely unaware of unless we happen to take notice or make a purposeful effort to recognize and change your thoughts and behavior. While voting for someone promoting racist policies? That's can ONLY be done on purpose.
To be fair, it could be that he was just using "don't judge" as a short cut to mean "don't allow partisan bitterness to cloud your judgement or to close you off from seeing the potential changes another person might make" which might have been a little too nuanced to bother explaining when the shorthand works just as well for the most part.
Though personally, I'm always wary of anyone who sets judging others up to be inherently negative. No, judging others is how people survived for thousands of years. It's how we all manage to live in a mostly cohesive, functioning society. Judging others is an important skill, and it's unfortunate it's developed such a poor connotation due to prejudice. Still, I can see the point he was trying to make and while I don't quite agree, I understand where he's coming from.
I found myself violently disagreeing with Garland and honestly couldn't stomach Jon's stroking Garland's ego anymore. This episode really disappointed me as a PSA fan.
@@Gildedmuse Robert Byrd gets an unfair rap from many quarters, particularly from magascum trolls trying to muddy the water as they drop his name in specious attempts to brand Democrats as racist. While he was no raging progressive, he did repeatedly repudiate his early dalliance with the klan throughout his later life, just as he gradually shifted from opposing the Civil Rights Act to a much more 'liberal' voting record as time passed. One could certainly argue that his evolution was wholly or in part due to political calculations amid changing public opinion, but Thurmond remained steadfast in his hardline racism until he finally died, having switched his party to the Republicans decades earlier. Duke is of course an complete outlier, having been an avowed klan racist his entire life, only playing it down when he attempted to run as a stealth candidate in the 90s.

You’re right! Mike Johnson should think of his children future with Trump in control of him
IRT the Alex Garland interview, I think he’s describing Left and Right in the 1980’s sense of the two. Lots of discussion of the “Overton Window” in the last couple of years. I think it’s fair to say that compared to many other countries our “Center Left” is more like their “Center Right”. Our “Right” has pulled closer to fascism (again since the 1930s), though so has the Right in Italy and France. But the question is, what is “center” in the 2020s?
Yeah, he's describing the British left/labour party, not the American left, which is effectively non-existent. The American right is not conservative, it is a reactionary insurgent authoritarian movement. As the famous sentiment goes, voting for national Republicans is not proof you are that, but it proves you are OK with that.
Stacy Abrams showed that the way to victory is registering and motivating non-voters, not trying to convert the few moderate Republicans (private citizens, not politicians) to the other side. Especially where I live in Houston, low turnout is the real issue. People have given up--and I don't blame them.
The Democrats should be doing everything they can to focus on the issues that affect people. Investigate companies for price gouging. Reward companies that are not. Attack state governments actively undermining worker's rights (like Louisiana is trying to do).
Unfortunately, many Dems are just bought off by corporations. However, they will vote the right way on a few issues (abortion, taxes, green energy) so I continue to vote their way. The last time I was excited for a vote was for Sanders.

The conversation with Alex Garland was amazing! I've loved his work for a while and it's refreshing to see a nuanced discussion of the themes. The “need to know” is the main thing about protecting the jurors. I don’t need to know ANYTHING about them. The media can just say the jurors were chosen and off we go! Why don't they sequester Jurors?
I believe that's only after the trial officially begins when all jurors are chosen. You don't want to force people away from their homes, family, jobs and friends for too long, after all.
Because of the burden it places on the jurors. Meaning it's hardly ever done anymore.
You didn’t play the full throated clip - there is audio where he fully supports Ukraine and says he doesn’t want his son to go to war …

Yikes horrible thought. You shouldn't have to tell an adult who is on trial not to use his phone in court to violate GAG Order but..... Sigh.
Most judges don't allow people to use their phones in court unless they are lawyers or staff.
🙏🙏🙏hopefully justice will win to lead trump contempt of violating gag order
He's too busy falling asleep to look at his phone.
Opening up this conversation of center-politics is crucial today
Liked that interview
I often skip the interviews, but I must say, this one was great. I've been ambivalent about whether I want to see the Civil War movie (I rarely go to movies anymore), but after hearing what the director had to say I definitely want to see it.
The cut to Dan with his head in his hands as Jon describes the situation with Mike "Vincent Adultman" Johnson is the PERFECT encapsulation of politics in 2024.
I'm really enjoying your conversation with Alex Garland. He is giving me a lot of good food for thought.
What a pleasure it is listening to this podcast! Intelligent but accessible. Thanks for the much needed humor in what could be panic.
"no one does that" regarding someone getting news from two sides of the spectrum (Fox, Daily Mail, Times, and MSNBC): many people do that, in order to get an idea of media bias and to see two sides of the same story. Given all the dis/misinformation online, digital literacy is more and more needed, and more and more neglected; those who will seek out opposing viewpoints generally will be able to see patterns and spot trolls/bad actors more easily than those who consume a single-perspective media diet.
Amen!
Excellent interview!
Jon has become such a great interviewer. Holy cow man. Loved the Alex Garland segment.
Thank you for the conversation with Alex Garland - appreciate the reframing around making moral judgments around political beliefs.
It's impossible not to make moral judgements about trump supporters
@@IMSiegfried Understandable...I try to let someone's actions speak to their character. IMO, choosing to judge someone based solely on their political beliefs is comparable to judging someone based solely on their religious beliefs. I am in no way trying to imply this is easy. I consider it a practice that I sometimes fail at and sometimes succeed. It's about returning to a place of curiosity toward my fellow humans and showing genuine care towards them, regardless of differing beliefs.
Thanks!
I never thought HRC was referring to ALL Republicans as deplorables as reported by Faux News. If I said, I was robbed in Miami, that's different than saying all Miamians are thieves. Jon should have pushed back (gently) on Mr. Garland's statement characterizing HRC's statements.
I had to stop listening to Alex Garland. Everything he says all sounds very reasonable! But he acts as though people who teach their kids to be right wing and people who believe in a free market all want the same thing as left wing voters but it's just a different path up the mountain. It's not. There are profound differences between the two sets of ideas. One set of ideas is rooted in a "sink or swim" philosophy that results in increased poverty, homelessness, and lack of access to basic resources that people need to live their lives. One set of ideas promotes the rich getting richer.
The other set of ideas promotes compassion, looking out for everybody not just the people whose ideas you find palatable, which is why when Democrats are in office, people (including Trump voters) have access to unemployment, social security, Medicaid and CHIP programs, Medicare, healthcare. When Republicans are in office, there is constant talk of stripping those programs. And I'm not even going to get into the racism/white evangelical bullshit that is sitting at the root of a lot of Republican policies and ideas.
I am watching it! Thanks for the earnest conversation
JOHN - 8 million is the population of the entire city (all five borough) Manhattan's population is 1.646 million. Not all are eligible to serve on a jury.
Yes, only New York County *Manhattan can serve on the jury.
great interview!! loved the dialogue and questions! thanks
It's nobody's business who the jurors are unless you want to threaten intimidate or harm them.
I really didn't want to see Civil War, but after Jon's interview with Alex Garland I may have to set aside my initial reaction and go see it.
We demand justice
I consume a lot of conservative and liberal media news personally I like to know what every one is talking about. And I watch you guys all the time....
That was a lovely interview :D I'll be seeing the film!
Alex Garland just moved his enlightened centrist views a little bit to the left and now seems to want not only praise, but also not to have to reflect critically why enlightened centrism harms the conversation just as much as whatever he's labelling as "extremist"
I don't think he is 'asking for praise'...I think he is just answering the question and giving his views. He also goes on to state that "there are problems" even with being "centrist". How can you 'blame' anyone for that? I think you are being slightly triggered by the term "extremist". Have you just realised your views might be "extremist"? Also, are you stating that any conversation about politics with people from any 'end ' of the debate are being "harmful" in their conversation? Surely any dialogue between people with opposing views is 'good dialogue'...?
@@tuliptubbs assumptions about me aren't really helpful in any comment. If you think that's all he's doing then I don't think we have anything to discuss because of course there's nothing objectable about just giving your views. I was going for a deeper analysis. Do you really believe that any discussion between opposing views is valuable? Every view should be platformed? Nazis? Eugenists? Fascists?
It was my understanding that Johnson just got briefings about the situations around these funding bills. I suspect, since he mentioned his son, there's information that we may be close to sending troops if this escalates and that it might sooner than later. My theory is he's trying to protect his family by trying to pass to send money not people.
Could very well be. Someone also suggested that Trump realizes he can get more voters now that he has supported aid to Ukraine bc it was one thing that independents and moderate Republicans didn't like him for.
He doesn't lose his job per se. He will still be a Representative of the House in Congress. He only loses the sweet office and a bit of salary but he keeps his job. Get it right. He keeps his basic job.
Great interview with Alex Garland. I definitely need to see the movie now.
Organic plugs? Is Lake suggesting HAIR PLUGS????🤔
1:07:32 WOW what an outstanding interview. An incredibly articulate perspective. Cannot wait to see the film!
Brilliant interview with Alex Garland! He is wise. Looking forward to watching the film and hoping it isn't foreshadowing.
I think the "Fox News" that the one juror noted having viewed is different the the Fox News that we all think of. If I understand correctly, they (being a New Yorker) might have been referring to "Fox 5 New York", which I think is just the local news there. Maybe part of the same media empire, but the usual suspects from Fox aren't featured. I'm not from NY, so any natives of the area please feel free to correct me if I got that wrong.
Perhaps, but their only other source is “X”, so that does not bode well…🤦🏼♂️🥴
Perfect storm scenario is terrifying. Going to see film tomorrow!
Discussion with Alex Garland was fascinating, and definitely gave me some points to think about. I was on the fence about seeing the movie in theaters, but now I think I'll have to leave my house, lol
I think that categorizing magas as "people we disagree with" is part of a core problem.
The left has always valued working those we disagree with, but the right has predominantly not been willing to do the same. Ignoring R vs D as they basically flipped which was right and which was left after The Southern Strategy, and just focusing on right vs left, the left has had to be the bigger person the whole time.
Now we have arrived, again, at a clear point at which the right has become an enemy of all of our country's stated ideals. There is no core greater good in what they do. And "centrist" is now very far right of what center was just 20 years ago.
I no longer consider the right to be legitimate people I disagree with, but rather people who seek to destry democracy altogether. I view them as pure enemies of the US
It's clear what math genius Jessie Waters is doing.
Jail has the right to deny a person out to take the "Oath of Office!!"
Gallego is a great candidate! He is smart. Kooky lying Kari will lose.
