    I've never participated in NaNoWriMo, but I've shamelessly taken advantage of their community during the event. There is so much activity there during the month before, during and after, so it's a great time to ask questions, get suggestions, and find inspiration. And YES, I agree that November is the worst month to do any sort of time-consuming challenge.

    • @jdavidwebb
      @jdavidwebb  Před rokem +9

      Yeah, the community can be incredible! The in-person write-a-thons can be fun too, once you get over the initial awkwardness lol

    My problem with NaNoWriMo is my finals are always in November, so I start out strong and then just completely fizzle out by the middle of the month. At this point, I mostly just use it as a way to get a book jumpstarted and get into some sort of writing rhythm, even if I don't hit the goal every day.

      Ah, finals! I knew I was forgetting something...

      Oh man, November is awful for students! Just existing during finals is already hard enough to throw a writing challenge on top of it, lol

      Same! I usually just use it as a way to write SOMETHING every day, even if it’s just a few words

    I was hoping to do NaNoWriMo this year but could never figure out why I was so stressed out even thinking about it. This video helped me realize the reason: I've got a lot of other things on my plate this year. Although the idea of completing NaNo on top of everything else sounds like something to be proud of, I figured out the stress and strain of trying to do too much at once wasn't worth risking my mental health. Next year, though! Patience will pay off, I'm sure.😄 I'm really glad for the balanced perspective presented in this video, lol.

      @_SpreadingLove_ Před rokem +3

      Myriah, you're totally right in prioritizing your mental health!
      Once you finish your novel (whether it takes a month or years), you'll have the reasons to be proud of yourself regardless of anything else.
      Good luck!

    I am already struggling with severe anxiety and my ptsd, right now, so I decided to throw away the word goals and hard deadline and just decided to use National Novel Writing Month to fully plan, outline, and begin my novel as well as interact with the community and get advice and tips. I know a lot of writers who use NaNo to create fanfiction, too, which is good way to participate without putting too much stress on yourself.

  • @_SpreadingLove_

    I commend you for being the first (that I saw, at least) showcasing a more realistic and pragmatic approach to NaNoWriMo.
    Sometimes it's easy to feel pressured to participate even if you don't have an available agenda or a finished plot/idea, just because it seems like you /should/ be doing it, especially to more youthful or inexperienced writers.

  • @catsjacinto
    @catsjacinto Před rokem +5

    I've been participating in NaNoWriMo since 2014 and have completed the challenge 3 times since then.
    Last year I took a break from it to preserve my mental health (I wasn't thinking "let's have fun!", instead entering the mindset of "I HAVE to write, why don't I have a project yet?". It was becoming a stressful chore instead of a fun challenge and tanking a toll on my sanity, to be honest.
    This year I have a project that's getting me excited, so I'm participating again, but I'm not facing the 50k as the end all be all, so I'll focus on having fun and enjoying the story. If I reach 50k, yay, if not, that's fine too!
    Think of your health first, and if you do choose to participate, remember it's supposed to be fun. If you're not having fun, maybe sit it out this time.
    Good luck to everyone participating!

    I'm doing Nanowrimo, but mainly as an excuse to work on a different story and take a break from my current one. Even then, I'd be happy if I only hit 15000 words or even 5000.

  • @deborahminter6231
    @deborahminter6231 Před rokem +6

    Nanowrimo is a lot of fun! It doesn't always work out every year or for everyone, it is just challenge for writers to participate in. Writers write A LOT so Nanowrimo is just a fun time of the year to write for a challenge.

    I've done NaNoWriMo twice, and I did agree with most of what the host said. That being said, NaNoWrimo is what got me writing in the first place. and without it I may never have dipped my toe in it.

  • @_d0ser

    I do NaNo specifically BECAUSE of #6. Knowing that I am easily knocking out someone else's goal while they sit and struggle fills me with glee.

  • @lexybaginsky
    @lexybaginsky Před rokem +7

    Thank you! This helped me so much. I have done NaNoWrimo often and won the last few times but my life situation has changed and after listening to your reasoning I now know that I am just not up to the pressure this year.
    So I set myself a lower, achievable goal and will just use all the tools and other people's drive and enthusiasm to get and keep me going and will just do as much as I can - but give myself grace so I won't feel bad for not achieving much, surely not 50 K. But I will write and I will have fun and that's the most important thing.

    • @jdavidwebb
      @jdavidwebb  Před rokem +1

      That's actually one of my biggest goals for this year's NaNo: to just have fun. :)

  • @TheSnakeh
    @TheSnakeh Před rokem +2

    These are really great points!
    There were times when I would try to get into it, skip a day or two, only to end up stopping altogether. This made me feel awful and made me lost my confidence. Last year I even started the challenge on Nov 1st with a new draft of a story in an attempt to get me to start writing again. I dropped it again.
    So, as you say, NaNoWriMo is not exactly for new writers or those who don't really write much. What worked for me was getting to write a bit every day (even if only a sentence or two) until it became a habit and started writing more every day.
    This November, I started with a 100K draft and a daily writing habit. So, I thought I'd give NaNoWriMo a go this year. It's a world of difference when you actually have a foundation to start on rather than asking too much starting out. I feel optimistic this time, but I will try not to beat myself over if I don't make it. After all, mental health should never be tossed aside!

    I wanted to participate in NaNo for years bu, firstly as a student and now as a teacher, living in Australia, November is the absolute worst month for me. School runs from February to mid- or late-December, so November has always been full of assessments/report writing in addition to all the end-of-year events and celebrations. It's good to hear someone else agree about the difficult timing of it. Probably the founders thrive under pressure. 😄

  • @AprilsMoon92
    @AprilsMoon92 Před rokem +2

    You made some good points. It is really silly why November is national writing month with how much is going on in November.
    I did participate in Nanowrimo this year and I found the structure/deadline of having to finish writing a novel in a month really helpful for me. Usually I struggle to finish an novel but this time I actually finished my book! Now I just have a ton of editing to do lol.

      It was a great thing for me. I had no idea I was going to do it this year until October 31st. I would never have kept going unless I had this idea that I just wanted to get to the 50,000’words this time. One thing I didn’t do this tine was connect to the website. I kind of find the social aspect a bit distracting.

    I will participate in NaNoWriMo, not to finish the 50000 words, but to make progress and for the community. I've been sick the last month and a half and have a lot of schoolwork to catch up on, so yeah... I have not been able to prepare and also don't have the time or energy.

    I love this video! No one is talking about this! I posted a video sharing that I'd be writing draft one of book three in my fantasy series during NaNo. By the time I posted my next video, I realized it made way more sense for me to work on draft two of book one (I need to get some eyes on this baby before I go too far in the series) so I shared that. And now, I'm like "why am I even participating this year?" I've won NaNo four times before, but they were always first drafts. Now, quality is more important than quantity, which doesn't quite work well for NaNo, at least not for me. Thank you for sharing the reasons why NaNo isn't always best choice. I think November will look very different for me this year, and I'm just going to accept that. Great video!

    I love this video. I'm participating this year to help myself get back into the habit of writing regularly and complete a book under deadline. BUT I am noticing that there are some heavier cons this time around. What would normally be abnormally productive writing days have become "not good enough" because I missed one day and now I'm behind and am scrambling to keep up. And yes, November is the WORST month ever!

    I love NaNoWriMo! I don’t really understand the stress. It’s a fun event, there’s no real penalty for not meeting a certain goal. It’s just a national group of writers acknowledging the love of writing with a shared event together. I love it!

    Great points. Nanowrimo isn't for everyone, and November is a terrible month to take on such a project. I wish it was during February instead. Minor note on the video, the music is distractingly repetitive.

    I really like how the student version of NaNoWriMo allows people to change their goal to anything above 5,000. My goal is 30,000 and as of today I'm at 13,000 words. It gives you a lot more motivation to keep writing when you set your own goal that still gives you all the benefits that the 50,000 word challenge has. Plus, you can see all of your classmates projects and chat with them on the app, giving eachother advice and motivation.

  • @LuxuriousBlu

    Do you think having a story idea you want to write, but no idea where to start it is a good reason not to do NaNoWriMo?

    • @jdavidwebb
      @jdavidwebb  Před rokem +1

      If you let it! It can also be a really good reason TO do NaNo. A lot of writers get hung up on things like not knowing where to start, worldbuilding, etc. But NaNo forces you to start anyway and just get words down on the page.
      Chances are, you won't get it right immediately, but in all likelihood you'll be somewhat close. It'll take some words in editing to polish it to where it needs to be, but it's a lot closer than you'd be if you waited and wrote nothing!
      On the other hand, if you don't have the slightest idea and you know the idea has a lot more stewing to do, it might be a good reason to hold off for now.

    Good info, but wouldn’t all these things be good for a newer writer to experience before they actually get into the publishing world? Where it matters. If a writer can’t handle “losing” a monthly writing challenge of 50k…(There’s no real prize) Maybe advise knowing that going into Nano, and give it your best go. Backing out without even attempting is a cop-out. Best sellers don’t cop-out. Just my outlook on it 🤷🏼‍♂️
    Smile more 🙂
