And as good as TF IV is, I still like TF III better.

    • @DemonHunterRay
      @DemonHunterRay Před 7 lety

      alxxpspqr Well yeah, I'm not the one who thinks about it. CZcams have a lot of people talking about it, even blogs on the internet.
      But have in count this, TFIV was not superior in just one aspect as other shoot em ups. It was very well balanced in the gameplay quality, graphics, music, sound effects, stage designs and difficulty.
      While other games blast one aspect of the game, they lack the quality of other aspects. And so... What make it superior? Well, the fact that it almost doesn't have any bad aspect.
      Of course my heart have an special place for TFIII, it have something I like more than TFIV. But this one, sometimes, is considered the best in the series.

    • @THESHMUPMASTER
      @THESHMUPMASTER Před 8 lety +1

      +Westapo: Video Games and Loud Music 1CC stands for One Credit Clear or No Death Run. Every game I cover I beat on the hardest difficulty without dying. So far I've done Whip Rush, Thunder Force 3 and 4 as well as Forgotten Worlds. I make a produced video first and then put my run after it if people want to stick around and watch. It's kind of crazy and why I'm not able to produce as many videos but I love mastering a game.
      Thunder Force 4 on Maniac is absolute insanity. Took me over 2 months of practice before I captured my run. Both that video and Forgotten Worlds (which was cake in comparison) are incoming in the next few months.

    • @NefariousWes
      @NefariousWes  Před 8 lety

      I'm not sure I would have the patience to practice the same game for two months. And that's the thing with shooters--practice, practice, practice. I'd like to see those 1CC videos, so i'll go ahead and subscribe so I can check 'em out once they're published.

    Here is a great example what means the processor of the genesis doubles the speed (in MHzs) of Super Nintendo’s. Excellent comparison, by the way, Thunder Force III is one of my favorite shooters ever because it was the game that made me fall in love with the genre.
    By the way, just one point: Thunder Spirits’ 5th stage is the same as Thunder Force AC that... it already appeared on Thunder Force 2!! Yeah, it’s a repeated level that I would never understand why it was included instead the excellent ice surface of the planet (curiously both levels have the same name for both versions, Haides and Ellis - different parts of the same planets?). Well... as a fan I’m very pleased with this video. Thanks!!

    I'd love to see someone go into the SNES Mini and do a little software tweak to make every single SNES game that ever ran with slowdown run without it (and without the sprite flicker too) just so we could see how good they would be/play in perfect running condition at a solid 60fps. I know someone has already done this with Gradius III (regardless of being on the Mini), which turned out to be pretty spectacular and turned it into an fps that easily matches the kind of stuff seen on Genesis regularly, and I think it would just be a very cool thing to do with all SNES games. Actually, I kinda wish the official developers would also re-release some of these classic SNES games in physical SNES cartridge form with additional chips to allow them to play on real hardware in 2020 with these slowdown-less and flicker-less versions too. That would be sooo cool.

    @CrazyEnzo03 Před 8 lety +2

    I find it interesting how a couple of Thunder Spirits' levels actually differ from Thunder Force AC. The battleship level and the final level were identical between AC and 3 but changed up in Thunder Spirits.
    Also, level 5 on Thunder Spirits, which matches level 5 from Thunder Force AC, is a retooled stage from Thunder Force 2 and features several enemies from that game, where AC's version of the soundtrack (which is much, much better IMO) sounds identical to TF2's version since the arcade board used Genesis hardware... which makes it sadder that a lot of the tracks shared by TF3 and AC were worse on AC.

    • @NefariousWes
      @NefariousWes  Před 8 lety

      +CrazyEnzo03 I've never played AC, so I wouldn't know. All of AC's footage was from other CZcams videos, but I did hear some of the music to come to the determination that I liked TF III's music on the Genesis better.
      And I've heard that "Spirits" stage five is a retooled stage from TF II, but didn't recognize it cuz I hadn't really played TF II since 1989. I did pick it up last summer, and that's where the footage in this video came from, but honestly, I didn't play it enough to recognize the stage from "Spirits", or even make it very far in the game, frankly. It's really tough, and I hafta say that I really hate the overhead stages. Glad someone that knows the game so well was able to spot these things. This video is pretty much for the die-hards.

At least you didn't block the glory of Hunger Made Them Desperate, incredible song butchered on Snes hah. • @NefariousWes
      @NefariousWes  Před 8 lety

      +Sara Polley Thunder Force III has one of my all-time favorite soundtracks! Sega used "Blast Processing" as it's ad gimmick back in the '90s, basically cuz it was the only advantage that the Genesis had over the Super Nintendo. So now people make jokes about it all of the time.

    • @THESHMUPMASTER
      @THESHMUPMASTER Před 8 lety

      +Westapo: Video Games and Loud Music I take issue with "only" advantage :P. The Genesis music capabilities were fantastic when used properly. It tended to sound more organic than the compressed samples the SNES used. You even mentioned it in the vid where you talk about the horn sample they were using in one of the songs. In fact, I'm pretty sure I mentioned that in my Thunder Force 3 video as well heh.
      But yeah, I was lucky enough to grow up with both a SNES and Genesis and love them both. So I got to see the strengths and weaknesses of both first hand. There is still no SNES game with a soundtrack like Streets of Rage 2. Just like there is no Gens game with a soundtrack like Final Fantasy 6. Each console had a style they were good at and when developers knew how to use it, they shined.
      Sorry for the rant, but I disagree with your 10% 90% theory :)

    • @NefariousWes
      @NefariousWes  Před 8 lety

      +SHMUP Master Oh, no doubt the Genesis has fantastic music when used properly. In fact, I'm currently working on my Top 10 Sega Genesis BGM songs. And yeah, no SNES game has anything that sounds like Streets of Rage--frankly I don't think it could've been pulled off. But when the same game is on both systems, I will say the SNES version sounds better the majority of the time. Maximum Carnage, Mortal Kombat II, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Battletoads Double Dragon, Super Smash TV--all sound better on the SNES. That's just my opinion.
      I also grew up with both systems, but had the Genesis for about two years before getting an SNES. Then The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past turned me from a Genesis fanboy into an SNES one. But like you, I didn't have to choose between the two.

    • @THESHMUPMASTER
      @THESHMUPMASTER Před 8 lety

      +Westapo: Video Games and Loud Music Same exact thing here. Had a Genesis in 1990 and got a SNES at the end of 91. Final Fantasy 4 is what made me fall in love with the SNES honestly. There were no RPGs that good, or with music that amazing on the Genesis.
      But yeah, if you are talking about straight ports you are probably right. Although there were exceptions like Earthworm Jim that were superior on the Gens, albeit, few. I think it just came down to the fact that it took more work on the Genesis to make it look and sound as good as the SNES due to older hardware, but it could be done in most cases. Hell, Pier Solar even replicated Mode 7 scaling on the Genesis, although it was apparently quite a technical feat to pull it off.

    You're being way kinder to the SNES music than I would be. The SNES music is an abomination compared to the Genesis. The Genesis one is dirty and crunchy as hell (in a good way), the stereo effect is way more effective and there's a ton more atmosphere. The SNES sounds like entry level MIDI. Just flat and dull.

    • @NefariousWes

    @CardboardSliver Před 5 lety +2

    As an owner of both...I prefer the Genesis version. The music on the Genny has that classic, amazing TechnoSoft sound. The SNES sounds good, but it's generic SNES sound fonts.
    Having played a few SNES Shmups, they all suffer from HORRIBLE LAAAAAAAAG. Even the amazing R-Type and Raiden games have terrible slowdown.
    Now, back to Thunder Force.
    Stage 7, ORN Base
    Hunger Made Them Desperate sounds so much more amazing on the Genesis.

    while i haven't played the snes version...this is a compelling argument why TF3 is better on the genesis. I have played TF AC on MAME emulation...and i find the changes...odd to be honest. Not saying that the arcade version is bad per se..but the changes feel like downgrades at times. TF3 is a spectacular shooter on the genny and while it gets overshadowed immensely by the systems top shooters, such as MUSHA, TF4, and most of the toaplan offerings...its WELL WORTH PLAYING and is an awesome game in its own right. A gem of a game right out the bat for the fledging genny at the time!

Slowdown really was the SNES' biggest weakness, and I'm surprised that with games like this the developers didn't see fit to add a custom chip into the cart just to give it a bit of a speed boost and really do these types of titles justice.
