Dear Natan, you forget to say the most important thing which is one of the most reliable car in the world! I have one with 500,000km (312,500 miles) and still going strong.
I love my Camry Hybrid, I drive 200+ miles a day and since I’m mainly on the highway I realized that the Camry hybrid system struggles less the cruise at 75mph, compared the the Prius prime I owned. Also it has way more space! Granted I have the LE hybrid with the more basic wheels, which gives it 50 mpg! Cruising at 75 to 85 mph all the time I get 45 mph which to me is amazing.
Nathan. We live in Wyoming where we are always struggling against head winds on I-80. We also travel to CA and TX once a year. My wife and I and two teenage boys. This car may just fit the bill!
My wife made us get one and I was so against it. After owning it for 5 years with zero issues I love the car! It gets great gas mileage. I fill her up 2 times a month and average 390 miles per tank. I also have a very heavy foot. I’ll probably trade mine in soon and buy a new one. They don’t loose much with depreciation. For those of you who need to compensate, and laugh at others for driving a car like this, does your vehicle have an ak in the back seat? Mine does lol 😂
Only 390 miles? I get 420 to 510 on my Golf TDI, even after the emissions fix, and the Golf’s far more fun to drive as well Yes, I also have an AR in the trunk Car guns FTW! Second Amendment Brothers regardless of car choice! :)
I bought a base-model awd-e one for my commute over a mountain pass, and I love it; Prius owners have never cared what anyone else thinks about their cars . I looked at the Rav4 hybrid, but it's more expensive, and gets far-less gas mileage. At well under $30K for an LE awd-e, nothing is even close. I'm averaging 56mpg, and have seen 71mpg on some trips. The dealer can turn off the back-up beeping. In Canada, the awd-e xle comes with the 11.5" touch screen. Prius haters are welcome to give more of their paycheques to the oil companies :)
I currently have a 2013 Prius V (Wagon) and I think your comment just sold me on the AWD Prius when it comes time for me to trade mine in. lol New England winters are brutal and lucky enough, I've yet to get stuck. But having that AWD option in mind is a major selling point, plus 50 mpg is extremely hard to beat.
We have a Prius (2018, fwd) and a '19 Rav hybrid. They are both good at different things. The RAV is crazy faster 0-60. Feels like a sports car in comparison to our Prius. RAV nets low forties MPG in mixed use, while the RAV gets about 10 mpg better. The RAV has better A/C, not that it is bad per se in the Prius, but more powerful in the RAV in really hot weather. The RAV hauls a lot more stuff. If AWD is a priority, the system in the RAV is hands down superior to the Prius system. But if you're willing to give up lots of space, gobs of power, and far superior AWD to gain 10 or 12 MPG, the Prius is the way to go for sure.
I'm still averaging 60 us mpg year-round, using dedicated winter tires for 3-4 months per year. In the summer the dash has shown over 80mpg a few times in trips over 60 miles -- the dash is about 2mpg optimistic compared to the spreadsheet. Priusoffroad dot com now makes a 1.5" lift kit for all Priuses, and a few other cars.
Lack of Android Auto/Apple CarPlay is dumb.. The beeping in reverse you can disable.. they have all beeped since 2004. The rest... Quiet, comfortable, roomy, nice on the highway.. have been true since 2004. Though front leg room in the 04-09 was actually less than the rear leg room. I have an 08 with 290k on it. Still gives me 47-52mpg city and 38-40mpg running at 85mph. The trick to "quickly" accelerate, assuming battery is not low.. Dip into the throttle quickly to about half.... Then as the engine revs up pull your foot back to about 25% and let it continue to pull. You would be surprised that helps a lot. Just flooring it to 60mph is NOT the beat way to get it to move. Love the video... Some good info.
No cold weather lithium concerns, 50 mpg and all wheel drive? I don't care how it looks that's great! I would buy one if I could fit comfortably in one! lol.
The haters will hate but I typically own more expensive vehicles or 4x4s and I was really impressed with this generation Prius. Ride quality and comfort was much better than I expected.
The prius name has a certain stigma among knuckle draggers since theyfeel like it threatens their guzzlers. The reality is cars have to get cleaner so if it wasn't for hybrid tech the guzzlers would be going away far sooner. Partly due to clean air credits, partly becasue a hybrid guzzler is no longer a guzzler in the eyes of the rule makers.
Si Raff I am guilty of hating on Prius and hybrids. But I am changing my mind. Gas cars are coming to an end and will be replaced. I am cautious but open minded on hybrids and alternate ways of powering cars.
A large rear hatch window, a bucket seat that allows the driver to turn her/his torso easily enough, 3 (three) rear view mirrors, a back-up camera, and rear sonar sensors that beep in proximity to something behind the car, would lead me to believe that if the driver behind you still needs to honk to tell you not to back up into his/her car, your troubles might not be with a beeping tone that reminds you that your transmission is currently in reverse mode.
John Chen yes. the MPGs are slightly less (about 20%), but that’s fine. A fair trade-off for a next-gen safety suite and Entune with Apple CarPlay, more passenger room, more cargo room, more speed, more handling, more rear torque, etc.
Something like 1 car of every 10 in Seattle is a Prius. I got a Camry Hybrid because it's most of a Prius (similar but bigger drivetrain) but it's *not a Prius*. Also the Camry is very driver-centric. All of the dials and controls are in front of the driver, or have another control on the steering wheel.
Thank you for mentioning your height, so many testers on CZcams tell you that there is plenty of room for them, but don't tell anyone how tall they are. As far as the backup chime, people manage to avoid hearing the sound when they leave their turn signals on. And considering that shifter shape, I am not so sure that I would bitch about it making a sound when I switch reverse....intentionally or accidentally.
What do I think? I think Nathan drew the Short Straw during TFL assignment day! $32K can buy so much more than that underpowered and hideous thing. Nathan, you did your professional best to apply the lipstick to that pig.
Yeah it's completely reliable, uses very little gas, silent in slow traffic and comfy to ride in with great resale. Terrible car. I wonder how they sell so many of them?
gavin vennemann Why? 7hp between two wheels isn’t enough to propel a car on their own. It relies on the rear axle as an additive to the front, not a substitution. That’s why it’s for bad weather, not trails.
@@afcgeo882 Ignore 7hp and look at it as 41lb/ft. Consider the engine only makes a little over 100lb/ft in the first place and it's plenty to get the car moving on it's own.
Si Raff I’d love to ignore it, but horsepower is the measurement of the motor’s actual ability to do specific work. Torque is just potential output directly from the motor. Unfortunately, they’re not the same thing and are difficult for people to understand. When it comes to moving a car on rollers, you actually need to look toward horsepower, not torque. That’s why cars often have to be revved up high to make it up an obstacle. The torque is there, but the actual horsepower output is not. Your reference to the low total torque output is important. Rolando Cordero no sir. I have a 2015 we bought new and they did it for free during one of our oil changes. I’m certain they can do the same for the new gen.

Its for the majority of older individuals who drive these things who will forget that they have their car in reverse if they don't have the beeper. Its not speed that kills its people not knowing wtf they are doing when driving.
Because older people are the most likely to buy into a car a dealership is trying to get rid of because know one is stupid enough to pay 32000 for a Prius. I would compare this to a Mitsubishi mirage that is worth half that.
Tyler Reynolds Nice try, but have you actually looked at Prius owners? It’s not old people. Old people are very late, if ever, adapters of technology. Priuses mostly appeal to the enviro/granola types.
Have looked at quite a bit on CZcams....No Lexus-Mercedes-Infiniti......don’t need or have 🤑for those vehicles😬. But am seriously considering the Prius .....it looks a lot better then previous vehicle.
They really should’ve used the styling and the infotainment from the Prius Prime. It’d be so much more appealing. Nonetheless, very nice, and the Prius remains a great car despite all of the hate.

The new phev crosstrek is rated at up to 90 MPGe, but the electric range is only 17 miles. After that it gets a combined 35mpg, only 5 mpg better than the normal ice crosstrek. I don't think the hybrid crosstrek is worth the money. Although i still love subies and the crosstrek is a great all around vehicle
Electric range is poor, cargo capacity severely compromised, MPG is meh for a hybrid. No thanks. Might have been compelling 10 years ago, but totally outclassed by a RAV hybrid or upcoming Escape hybrid these days. I can't understand why anyone outside a die hard Subaru fan would buy a CT hybrid. What Subaru really needs is a non hybrid Crosstrek with 30 more horsepower. The current car is painfully slow, especially with the A/C on in hot weather.

Prius' are limited to around 100mph so they don't overspin their gearbox but they can get there and stay there reasonably well. That's what good aero does for you.
Phoggbank I10 In Texas, is a lot of free way with nothing around it. The police most of the time pass you going over a hundred. There is literally nothing out there in some parts.
Gary G but it’s a reliable car. Model 3s are literally falling apart as we speak. Terrible production. My friend bought one and the electronics went amok, doors locking , unlocking at random. Sunroof opening/closing for no reason, lights on and off. That company should have waited to fix production before signing off on mass production
Fugly. It's as if they want to fail. 50mpg isn't that awesome - my 2012 Prius C is around 48. The new seat's head rest looks like it still made for fat or hunched back people. Most people find the Prius seats uncomfortable. Touch screens are a flop.
Depends what you need most. The Prius wins on space, practicality, price, economy, reliability, comfort, cost to own, resale, customer service, warranty, quality, nvh and ease of use. The Fiat can (if it's working that day) get across a 1/4 mile faster.
I think the 2018 Prius looks way better than that.. the 2018 tail lights look futuristic, I don’t understand why they made it typical and boring looking again
I would spend a tiny bit extra for a base model Tesla model 3. Faster and you can forget about ever having to buy fuel and it doesnt look like dog sh$%t like this car does.
In Canada the fwd Tesla model 3 is $20K more than an LE awd Prius (I don't know how much more for the awd). In the US, an awd model 3 is 47K vs 23,700 for an awd Prius. To me, that's a lot more. Maybe a Tesla next time.
@@damienvdv -- The LE awd Prius is $23,700 in the US. Looks like the XLE with technology package is 30K. Maybe the test car had upgraded wheels? I think a Tesla would be great, but I want EV to mature for at least another five years

The headlights are better than last year but meh. I had no desire for awd after a NY winter with my Hyundai Ioniq hybrid with a proper set of winter rubber (michelin xice i3's). And I can push the needle past 60mpg on the highway. And I get android auto. I could go on..

There is no “best” Prius, if we’re talking fun to drive, that is, the Prius is the most soulless, un-fun transportation appliance on the road. As far as maximizing fuel economy, it’s a grand slam home run, an amazing bit of technology, a resounding success! It’s just not fun in any way, pity really, as electrics have vast performance potential, just look at Tesla, if Toyota could make an affordable Tesla style car, or even a truly sporty Prius, it’d be good

yes cars on the highway use less engine hp than a car in stop and go traffic.
Prius' are limited to around 100mph so they don't overspin their gearbox but they can get there and stay there reasonably well. That's what good aero does for you.
U gotta test drive one the electric torque is bad ass
For barely having 3 digit horse powers these Prius sure can fully down the freeway
on the highway most cars are barely pushing 60 to 100hp at 70mph I hate that Auto industry rates things by peak power instead of power actually used.
What's good for mpg generally also makes it easier to get speed. Efficiency is efficiency which ever way you make it.
I drove 100 miles an hour for 230 miles and averaged 37 miles per gallon.
Moro11 Where did you drive? Autobahn?
Phoggbank I10 In Texas, is a lot of free way with nothing around it. The police most of the time pass you going over a hundred. There is literally nothing out there in some parts.
Struggling to hear what he's saying over the music
At 32 grand, it is too close to the Tesla model 3 premium with incentives.
@@grahf9436 Tesla Model 3 doesn't have a sunroof that opens...
Fugly. It's as if they want to fail. 50mpg isn't that awesome - my 2012 Prius C is around 48. The new seat's head rest looks like it still made for fat or hunched back people. Most people find the Prius seats uncomfortable. Touch screens are a flop.
How much in Canadian dollars for the version with a heater?
28,900cdn list for an le awd.
How does this compare to say, a Hell Cat, which I am cross shopping with this vehicle?
It does well against it. I tested both and a Benz s600 as well as a Ferrari F430. Prius won for me.
50... 50???? sheesh
i can understand you great
great common sense everyday people comments that can understand. great
I would spend a tiny bit extra for a base model Tesla model 3.
I said "base" model 3 which is 35k in the US is it not? 2 wheel drive. Didnt he just say in the US this awd Prius is 32k!
@@damienvdv -- The LE awd Prius is $23,700 in the US. Looks like the XLE with technology package is 30K. Maybe the test car had upgraded wheels? I think a Tesla would be great, but I want EV to mature for at least another five years
@@davidrandall2742 Anyway still doesn't change the fact that the prius is as ugly as hell. Why do you need it to mature for another five years? The batteries being used in the Tesla are superior to whats in the Prius.
@@damienvdv -- I like how the new Prius looks, it's far cheaper than an awd Tesla 3, and there're aren't many charging stations where I am. Enjoy your Tesla if you want one.
Nathan you tried, and I do appreciate your courage, really I do, but there is simply no way to make a Prius review exciting lol. Way to take one for the team.
good for LA traffic
Still so so Fugly. And an Uber/Lyft vehicle with no rear seat head room? Would be better if Toyota offered a 4WD Camry PHEV.
Is it smaller than a Camry? From the vid it looks pretty big for a small car.
The headlights are better than last year but meh. I had no desire for awd after a NY winter with my Hyundai Ioniq hybrid with a proper set of winter rubber (michelin xice i3's). And I can push the needle past 60mpg on the highway. And I get android auto. I could go on..
Have fun with the dct. It is in my view one of the downsides of the hyundai/kia hybrids
@@yanDeriction I suppose it's a preference. I can understand. There are a few behaviors that are unique to it and I could understand it being disliked. But I really enjoy how natural it feels, How quick and punchy it shifts in sport yet smooth in eco. And ithe transmission is absolutely silent at highway speeds.
There is no “best” Prius, if we’re talking fun to drive, that is, the Prius is the most soulless, un-fun transportation appliance on the road.
As far as maximizing fuel economy, it’s a grand slam home run, an amazing bit of technology, a resounding success!
It’s just not fun in any way, pity really, as electrics have vast performance potential, just look at Tesla, if Toyota could make an affordable Tesla style car, or even a truly sporty Prius, it’d be good
Seeing the Prius being reviewed on TFL, is like watching a Lynrd Skynrd concert being played by hipster beta-males.
My GMC Terrain beeps once loudly everyone you go into reverse but I don’t mind it
If they made it Manual Id trade my Subaru Impreza in for one!
Wtf is that... Damn toyota needs some designers
That car needs to hit the race track and get a time on that baby! Where's Paul?
7hp? LOL. I thought it will be more like the Model 3 ... ~200+200hp ...
Camry hybrid has 200hp
41lb/ft. It's to get you moving in poor conditions - not to help performance.
Take it to snow or cliff hanger
No Android auto continues to be a deal breaker for me with Toyota.
If your potential new car you want has no Carplay or Auto, try this easy alternative: czcams.com/video/ecWNOd_8CdI/video.html
throw your phone away
So you were all in on this Monstrosity until you realized you couldn’t mirror your phone screen on the hideous dash? Holy Sh*t I’m speechless.
Makes $30k buying decisions based on a $700 phone. You win today’s “idiot” award!
George L hahahaha
slip test !!!!
From 2010 - 2015 it looked good (not great). Anything before or after is ugly.
Surprisingly good car?
Why can't Toyota follow in Tesla's footsteps? The styling and philosophy of the Prius is incredibly lame and boring.
When hasn't Japanese design philosophy been conservative and boring? lol Its just the way their corporate culture can be.
@@loganholmberg2295 have u seen the Mazda's? They look awesome and they're Japanese
Fyi, Hawaii don’t have “crappy weather” ahaha ask me how I know 🤷🏽♂️
“Best Prius” is an oxymoron
It's the best Prius thug though
You drive too close to the steering wheel
is "detractors" the right word?
MY EYEEESSSS!!!
Its vegan leather.
Good car if u r blind
Best Prius is like saying Best STD.
50 mpg car... old tech, Nathan ??? Every car should do at least 50 mpg, dont you think ?
technology only goes as far it was designed to be. The prius is old but efficiency at 50 mpg is not the big fuel companies want.
Energy efficient cars, yes but larger size like Tesla do. The Prius is too small. If Toyota want to sell more, they should built larger size vehicules.
They do in Europe; in america it's all about safety
