    A lot of people in the comment section don't seem to understand that Shelby wasn't being selfish. She knew exactly how it felt to be in Quinn's place, except it was even worse because there was a contract in place from the beginning. Rachel was never hers to keep, unlike Quinn and Beth. Shelby had to make it clear she was Beth's mom regardless of biology, and that while she wanted Quinn and Puck involved in her daughter's life, there needed to be boundaries in place. Legally and in Beth's mind, Shelby is her mother. Quinn and Puck are strangers who gave up their rights so their daughter could have a better life. Quinn was a confused teenager who flip flopped constantly about what she wanted and who she was, and that sort of inconsistency isn't good for children. It took her a while to realize that Beth was happy where she was and that while she was a part of her, she wasn't her mom.

    • @Mia_M
      @Mia_M Před 5 lety +24

      Shelby makes a distinction between the words mother and mom. Biologically she's Rachel's mother, but she wasn't the one to see her grow up. Obviously Shelby had no idea how much Rachel still needed her, but regardless a true mom is someone there for all of the moments that make up a person's life.

      alexander aldana how do you know she didn’t think about her, I’m pretty sure you don’t stop thinking about your daughter and she probably didn’t want to talk about her or be reminded of her 24/7 because it would be painful and as you can see she did get lost due to many things but Beth is certainly one of them. It’s a mother’s instinct to be there for their kids but she gave hers away so that would probably damage her a bit, hence the bad decisions she made trying to get Beth back.

    So what's the difference between Asperger's, Autism, and Autism Spectrum? Are people with the first one generally known to say inappropriate things like Sugar?

    • @Bubblegum-xm5cg
      @Bubblegum-xm5cg Před rokem +3

      Actually, those are all the same thing, and Sugar is bad representation. Aspergers was named after a nazi that chose which autistic kids lived and died in ww2, the "high functioning" (bad term) ones getting to live. Aspergers is just autism that is considered "high-functioning," and I'm pretty sure isn't even on the DSM-5 anymore. Autism itself is a spectrum, so ASD and autism are the same thing, just one being more specific on the spectrum part. Saying rude stuff isn't necessarily an autistic trait, though likely a general personality thing. Sugar's character is self-diagnosed, which is often valid in the autistic community, but is portrayed as more of an accessory in this show, and she doesn't show many traits. Some autistic people may be blunt, direct, honest (in this case, it would be opinion-wise), and even rude sometimes, at least in the eyes of NT people, but it's not much like this. Plus, she always mentions her self-diagnosis as an excuse, rather than explanation.

      @johnrainsman6650 Před rokem

      @@Bubblegum-xm5cg because I’m on the spectrum, and I have said dumb things without a filter, sometimes even offensive things (though unintentionally and jokingly). I figured my ASD must be the reason I’ve stood out, have been like a freak and misfit, and said inappropriate things. Sugar isn’t a bad representation of my type per se, because maybe Autism _is_ a bad thing and makes you different and weird (despite the idea everybody is different and weird). That’s my theory. We just stand out, including myself under certain circumstances (and definitely in elementary school)

    • @Bubblegum-xm5cg
      @Bubblegum-xm5cg Před rokem

      @@johnrainsman6650 I understand what you mean, but there is nothing wrong with you. Our brains are simply different, not bad. I also say inappropriate stuff, act strange, and I've been called rude, but that's just the words of NT people. Really, we are expressing ourselves, being honest and direct, acting like ourselves, and coming off how we always do despite the social cues I may have trouble following or understanding. It is not bad to be autistic. It just means we don't experience, understand, etc the world, concepts, constructs, and so on like NT people do, as well as plenty of other things. Regarding Sugar, I respect your opinion. I just personally feel like she didn't show any other traits than coming off as rude, and would more excuse it than explain it with Aspergers.

    • @johnrainsman6650
      @johnrainsman6650 Před rokem

      @@Bubblegum-xm5cg I wouldn’t say our brains are simply different, because it really isn’t that simple if you think about it. Again, I thought _everybody_ was different. In that case, nobody would be different different, and yet somehow, that’s us. But how? So being Autistic...is factually different different? Why does it feel like neurotypicals are more common and normal than us? Heck, typical implies normal, I think. I don’t know, it _really_ sounds to me that scientifically and statistically, autistic people are the weird/different ones within the world of weird/different people. I feel it in my guts

    • @Bubblegum-xm5cg
      @Bubblegum-xm5cg Před rokem

      @@johnrainsman6650 That's because neurotypical people are the majority. The idea of "normal" is both real, and non real. It is real when talking about what is more common, repetitive, and so on. The idea of "normal" isn't real in a social sense. There's no "normal" when it comes to brain types, body types, and so on, as those are all things that can naturally be different among people in many ways. "Neurotypical" is referring to how NT people are the norm, in the sense that they're more common, known about, etc, and neurodivergent people aren't as common or known about (clearly much more known nowadays, but yeah). We simply have a brain that isn't the majority, which considers us less common, and different from NT others, rather than alienated and strange (while many do perceive us that way, due to ableism). It's true that everyone is different, but there are still majorities if common traits among them, and we are the minority, which considers us different from them.
